Tips For 1999 Mode In Bioshock Infinite

Obvious spoiler thread will have spoilers. You have been warned. Some music for the read. Alright, so currently I'm in process of completing my second playthrough of Infinite (Just liberated Elizabeth in Comstock House), this time on 1999 Mode also going for the Scavenger Hunt Achievo, and since I'm finding it surprisingly challenging at some points, I thought I could give out some tips to those of you wishing to go for the difficulty. As I said, I'm going for the other achievement at the same time, so all of my tips are without taking into account the possibility of purchasing supplies at the Dollar Bill vending machines. Alright, well, here is my set up and thoughts on equipment and how to engage different types of enemies. I'll tell you problems I've had with them, what works, what doesn't, stuff to avoid, things that saved my life, etc etc etc. [b][i][u]Weapons[/i][/u][/b] IMO, best weapons of the game and for this mode are, hands down, the Carbine and the Sniper Rifle. Upgrading them only makes them more useful and versatile. Sniper usually kills most enemies one shot to the head, other enemies will take more hits, but I'll get into that later with each specifically. The Carbine is your good for every distance weapon. Maxed out it can kill standard enemies in two shots to the head or four to the body. Combined with a vigor like Shock Jockey it'll kill in two shots anywhere. Ammo is kind of inconsistent for this weapon, but Elizabeth usually keeps you supplied with enough. I should also add the Crank Gun as an essential which just wipes the deck clean, even with the stronger enemies, but I'll get into that later. Other weapons I'd recommend going to if you have no access to the above are the Machine Gun, RPG or Shotgun. I don't really like the Vox variations, so I haven't really tried them off on this mode except for the Repeater which is acceptable, I guess. Of course, this is just my recommendation, you can use whatever weapons cater to your playstyle. I think it's obvious to say that each weapon must be upgraded whenever you can. [b][u][i]Vigors[/b][/u][/i] Now, the ones I've found most essential are Shock Jockey, Devils Kiss, Bucking Bronco and Undertow. Possession is good, but only for certain cases like turning turrets, but even then, sometimes the cost in salts isn't worth the trade off. Upgrade it to cost less when you can. Return To Sender I find useless. Charge is decent, but I never really found use for it how I played (once again, if it caters to your playstyle, then by all means, use it). Crows is the same case as charge for me. It's useful during the start of the game, but once you get access to other vigors, you'll stop using it. At the start of the game, combine it with devils kiss. Bucking Bronco is my powerhorse for survival. Lift any group of enemies infront of you, even most heavy hitters (obviously except Patriots and Handy Mans) and finish them off. It also works wonders if your cornered, waiting for your shield to come up. See an enemy and pop it. Combine it with Undertow or weapons fire (Sniper Rifle work especially well) to knock enemies off Columbia and killing them fast. This applies, as I said, to most heavy hitters, so if you have the chance, use it. Shock Jockey greatly weakens enemies so moping them up is easy. Mechanical enemies go down fast while shocked. The traps are great for setting up a kill zone with the sniper or setting up an area for retreat. Upgrading it to the chain effect is just bliss. Undertow, for the reason listed above, is great for knocking enemies off Columbia giving you an easy kill. It also works great against Fireman, weakening them considerable and throwing them to the ground. Devils Kiss is an essential to have. Upgraded all the way, it's traps will kill standard enemies most of the time. It's great for clusters of enemies, especially with it's first upgrade. Highly recommend using this one plenty throughout the game to deter the enemy and set up kill spots. It works good against mechanicals too until you get Shock Jockey. [b][u][i]Equipment/Gear[/b][/i][/u] Very important aspect to decide. Getting the right gear can mean death or life on this mode, and trust me, death is bitch on this mode. These are the ones I'm using currently: [b]Sheltered Life[/b]: 'Grants brief invulnerability when gaining health from snacks and health kits'. I think it's pretty obvious how useful this is when in a firefight. Always search corpses during a fight because you never know if one has a snack. If it does, go out guns blazing in their faces and pull back once it starts wear off unless you find more. It's also great for getting out of a sticky situation. [b]Pyromaniac[/b] 'When struck, 50% chance to burn nearby enemies. Victims take 400 damage over 3 seconds'. Immensely valuable when getting corned up close or having an asshole melee enemy sneak up on you. Severely weakens them and stuns the rest nearby. [b]Newtons Law[/b] 'Landing off a Sky-Line knocks back nearby enemies'. If you're on the run and you air strike someone, it's vital that the guy next to you doesn't have the chance to continue shooting you while you hit the guy and turn around. Knocks him back and leaves yo open for vigor aided attack or something to the face. [b]Last Man Standing[/b] 'When very low on health, killing and enemy gives health'. Perhaps the most invaluable one in the game for this mode. Trust me, you'll be loosing a lot of health and being very close to the edge. Even if you are about to die, killing off an enemy will grant you enough health to run and recuperate your shield or find proper health kits. Trust me, this is a must-equip. You'll thank me later. [b][u][i]Enemies[/i][/u][/b] [b]Standard Enemies[/b]: - Standard Soldiers: Not to much of a problem, but still, keep your distance when possible, they can surprise you easily by flanking you and that will get you in deep trouble. - Melee Enemies: Bastards. Always know where they are. If they manage to slip you and surprise you, one whack will take your shield down, and two hits will kill you entirely. That will probably not happen, but it leaves you panicked and exposed to other enemies. Set up traps for them if you see a bunch of them coming for you. I'd recommend Devils Kiss (upgraded at least once) at a choke point. [b]Snipers[/b]: They are rare throughout the game, but even then, tread carefully. One shot will deplete your shield, and I'm pretty sure another will kill you unless your health is upgraded. Keep reveal them and keep to cover, then peak out slightly, little by little until you can land the shot. Patience is key. [b]Fireman[/b]: These are the first heavy hitter type enemy you'll encounter. Needless to say, keep a distance, but not too much, as these guys throw Devils Kiss at you and at a distance it's a bitch considering the aim, the amount of projectiles they'll throw and above all, the AOF. They have a considerable splash damage, so by keeping it mid-to-close distance, you'll avoid them going crazy throwing shit at you. I recommend using Bucking Bronco or Undertow, and if possible, mixed. When you do kill them, watch out, as they will run towards you and explode. When you hear the characteristic scream and noise, back it up.

    [b]Crows[/b]: These guys are assholes in tight quarters with more enemies. He is your priority to take out unless in dire situation or you have a good distance from him. His attacks will take your shield out one hit, even if completely upgraded. Probably kills you one hit unless you upgrade your health. Once again, I recommend Bucking Bronco against them, but time it right or you'll hit when moving around as crows and nothing will happen. That or set up a trap with Devils Kiss to where he is going to reappear. [b]Motorized Patriot[/b]: I don't have much problems with them as they are easy to guide into traps, and once you get Shock Jockey (especially with the duration upgrade) you can shock them and circle and lay the pain on the gears for greater damage. If not using the circling tactic, keep some distance because they like to rush and go in for the melee. You can snipe them in the head, but the head will eventually come off, but it does slightly more damage than regular body shots. Predictable but still fun to fight. Love their comments. [b]Handy Man[/b] You're worst nightmare. Not only are they as vicious, but the amount of damage they give you and the speed in which the pain comes is nothing short of nerve wracking. Distance, especially Sky Lines, are your friends. Lay as much damage as you can on him with a combination of heavy weapons or precision shots to the heart and vigors. They can take an immense amount of damage, and if you have the chance, let it attack other enemies while you attack it or call in the help of allies from tears. I've died twice by Handy Man's. Mostly trying to get on to sky lines or the guy just pouncing me and cornering me. Shock Jockey traps are your friends to briefly stun him. He takes so much damage that I can't even really be sure if it weakens him. Using environmental hazards definitely helps, though. And a trick I'll share with you (how I got the Heartbreaker achievement), they love to electrify the skylines so take advantage of it when possible. Let him jump on and when you hear the distinct electrical noise, jump off and aim for the heart. Repeat until he's done. Abuse it as much as you can [b]Boys of Silence[/b]: I don't really think they need any explaining other than that patience is the key. You'll regret alerting them and allowing a -blam!- load of melee enemies to rush you. Since the first one is unavoidable, use traps on the enemies that he spawns. Devils Kiss traps work perfectly. [b]Siren (Lady Comstock)[/b] The biggest of all bitches. First things first. You die once against her, just restart the checkpoint. It is near impossible to kill her once you've died and she's recovered her health as you will have wasted most of your ammo, most of your salts and the only weapons laying around are not too good. Crank Gun is the best weapon against her. 100 rounds can bring her to around half health. You need to finish her off fast. If she spawns enemies, use Devils Kiss traps right as they are falling to the ground, after this little pressure wave thingy. It should kill them, and if not, it will almost get it done. The longer you take to kill her, the worse and harder the fight will get. As I said, if you die, just restart. Don't waste your time like I did, dying 5 times and using up all the supplies in the tears in the graveyard and essentially running out of ammo for everything. It was, hands down, the hardest part of the game for me. I'll continue to update this shortly as I think up of anything else.
