So... Races in Destiny huh?

That to me was one of the more suprising elements of the GDC Presentation that in addition to Humans, players could play as the Awoken and the Exo. I was almost certain that they would want to try to create a "Humans versus the Universe" vibe with Destiny, and this decision to introduce other playable races brings up so many new and burning questions. Just where did the Awoken and Exo come from? Are they mutations from the Human Genome? Did they live on Earth along with Humans? Why are they helping humans? Are all the ruins we'll encounter exclusively Human, or will there be Exo and Awoken Constructs as well? What do the races think of each other? Why are they working together? From a gameplay standpoint, how will playing as an Exo differ from playing as an Awoken? A human? They did say that they wanted to be the choice between races to be a gut decision, so it might be more of an elaborate plot related point (Like choosing to be born in Space versus growing up on the Streets in Mass Effect) as opposed to getting different stats as different races (See Elder Scrolls and overpowered Argonian Water Breathing). The game gets more complex...
Edit: For those interested in the GDC segment where they talk about races, Watch from 56 Minutes on in. Watching it again, they seem to emphasize aesthetics and fiction with the races and not gameplay.

Edit: a post panel interview with Staten and Barett has yielded some more information, in particular, they pretty much say that race won't have an impact on gameplay, as I had thought initially after hearing the way they talked about Race in the presentation:
Chris Barrett: When we were talking about how that process would work and the choices the players would have, we knew if we gave somebody a choice and then betrayed that choice later down the road, that would be bad. We wanted players to just go on gut. What do they like the look of? What sounds cool to them? And not betray that in any way. We don't want to make something where a character plays very differently, or isn't what they thought what they were getting. That tied in to that process. We want to give people whatever they want to play in that world and not have any negative side effects. Joe Staten: Making it up front and quick and largely emotional, and nothing that's going to, later down the line, make you feel like you made the wrong choice. You're going to make this gut emotional choice: 'I'm going to look at that robot and I'm going to look at that more exotic space elf and I'm going to look at that human and I like... robot.' It's like, bam. I'm going to be a robot. And there's nothing about being a robot that's going to play any different from the other two. We want to make it immediate and quick and gut, for sure when it comes to race, and then make sure we don't screw you down the line. Chris Barrett: We didn't want to give a plus eight bonus or whatever it is, that people are going to be like, 'Oh, I made the wrong choice! I've got to start over.' That always sucks.

• The awoken are also human. They were changed during the collapse. And the Exo were probably created by humans.

  • A speculation to one of your questions, maybe an obvious one: the Traveler helped propel Exo and Awoken as well. Maybe they have experience fighting the Darkness, or maybe these are the last of each race and they have no choice but to come together. All in all, it is very interesting to think about.

  • I think the Exo are incredibly cool and fitting. I myself explain them as humans that were trained as special forces or some kind of military thing, or maybe even just a society of humans from some other part of earth. Definitely human though. Awoken on the other hand I think are totally random, still cool to me since I love fantasy and stuff, but... I dont know.. an elf or a vampire with a gun killing aliens in an attempt to save earth sounds crazy xD Still I guess one could argue that the Awoken have lived on Earth as long as we have, and unite with Humans against aliens because it is their home too. Maybe Bungie is suggesting that Ghosts and Vampires are real :P Anyhow I cant wait to play this and see what kind of cool Races and classes there are!! Will take me 3hrs to just choose the race, probably 4 to choose the class..

    • I'm thinking about Awoken Warlock, just because it sounds like something i would be interested in. Exploring, knowing how to get around and not always needing your gun in every fight. That and the little energy ball they throw just looks really good. For me Mage has always been my go to class but it looks like if i get this game i might branch off a bit. Thinking about the Races, Exo sounds to me like someone in a sute that needs help moving about. Sounds like they would also be more of a hunter class because someone needing machine parts to do anything at all would be more precise and get things done with less effort. One bullet to kill them all... Awoken sounds like people who are more aware of whats going on or understand more then others. Sounds like a warlock class because of the constant need to gain knowledge. Kinda makes me think.. would warlocks gain more ability's traveling to new places and learning there tech like how it says they have studied the traveler? Thinking about it now.. I wonder how Exo Warlock would work.. If Exo is a robot or cyborg, would they have a little mega man blaster? If so i may want to rethink my race choice...

      • It's most likely that the Awoken and Exos are offshoots of humanity, so it makes sense that they'd be fighting alongside us. From what I know, the general community consensus on the Awoken is that they're humans that were "Awoken", so to speak, by the Traveler. The Exo's are either human cyborgs or human minds implanted in robot bodies.

The Exo really appeal to me. They're alien and distant, but they don't strike me as empty. There's definitely something behind those bright eyes as he slumps against the wall with the blood of his enemies (or friends?) drying on his mask.

          • I think that the Exo and Awoken were both originally Human but altered in some way. If we look at their names they aren't very much like a name a different species would have. Awoken suggests that certain Humans were awoken in some magical way (possibly by the Traveller or a scientific alteration) while Exo is in reference to "outside" which could be more of a super soldier take by having an exo-suit of armour like an exoskeleton that cannot be removed.

I would personally enjoy it if these other two races were mutations of the human genome, from a story standpoint. Though the idea of space elves does sound like fun. If the game was to come out this second (boy wouldn't that be something) then I would probably be an Awoken Warlock. :P Edit: From a game play standpoint I think it would be amazing if there were little nuances, or even large playstyle differences across the three. For example Exo's don't show up on heartbeat sensors (if such a thing existed in the game), awoken can enter a sort of Ethereal form and pass through walls (yeah OP as hell I know). Like i've said in other threads, balance problems would be the only set backs, I would be all for it otherwise.

                • I thought it was pretty obvious that the Awoken are just humans with a lot of Traveler juice (soul, life force, energy, whatever) flowing through their veins and the Exo[s] are cyborgs.

                  • From what I've gathered since the initial announcement of Destiny, Bungie wants the player to be able to create a character entirely unique to them. To me, this means stats will most likely not be tied to any one race (or armor, for that matter) because that limits the opportunity for customization. For example, let's say I want to be a Warlock. If the Awoken have the highest "mana" than the other races at the beginning of the game, they're the obvious choice for anyone who's going Warlock. What that does is put any Warlock who doesn't chose the Awoken at a disadvantage. This scenario is something I'm assuming Bungie will want to avoid, considering they seem to be promoting customization over all else.

                    • The races are cool, but there NEEDS to be more than three. Lets put it this way: 3 classes/races = 9 possible combinations of class-race. Meh. 3 classes and 5 races = 15 combos. See where this is going? Or if they do have more classes, lets say two more as well, that's 25 possible combinations. My point to all this is to say that I don't want 1 in 9 people to be exactly like me. If this is a shared world shooter (mmo) there needs to be more uniqueness than 9 choices for everyone.

                      • just a little idea i think that the awoken might be a human mutant breed or suffering from the affects of a strange ritual (maybe not suffering) but at there base they are still human. the same could maybe be said for the exo maybe they're a human that choose to be enhanced with robotic parts or we're first gen super soliders. so in short the human cause is their cause once again just an idea.

                      • Now I don't know about different stats, and one race being better at some things than others, but I'm sure each race is going to have one special ability. Its possible that one race may have like three unique abilities and you have to choose one. That I wouldn't mind.

                          • One thing that I haven't really seen in any of the comments on here so far was about how these races would impact the plot. I am very curious to see what Bungie will do with these races. I also wonder what part they will play in rebuilding earth? Because before I had watch the GDC I had the impression that this universe was going to be a Human vs all. So I wonder if the Exo or Awoken will actually have much say in what the last city or how the future of humans will be shaped. What do you guys think?
