So i finally got Dark Souls

Seriously, this is among my favorite games EVER, and I've only had it a few days. So far, I'm playing a standard warrior class with lots of melee and not much else. I'm at the first bonfire of Blighttown atm, and I was wondering if you guys have any advice for a noob player. Currently, I'm still using the drake sword, and i was wondering if it's about time to swap it out for something else (an upgraded laito katana maybe?). Also, I'm thinking i should probably get a few attunement slots and experiment with magic, but I'm hesitant to because it will use souls that might be better spent on vitality, end, str, etc. I might eventually just start a pyromancer (named melisandre) playthrough, to use magic and get acquainted with the more subtle aspects of the game. Thoughts? ideas? Suggestions? I'm really just wondering if there are any great things I'm overlooking, or terrible mistakes I'm making. And again, this is by far the most exhilarating, intricate, intense, intelligent game I think I have ever played. I am eagerly looking forward to the end of this semester, so I'll have time to really study the game and learn the tricks.

  • Okay, I made it up to Sen's Fortress (Sen, you filthy bastard), and i have made a +5 raw laito katana. I'm planning on grabbing the lightning spear in the fortress, then making the laito into a +10 fire eventually. Thoughts?

  • Make a dex faith hybrid. Use sunlight/darkmoon blade on a 2-handed falchion and RB RB RB RB to victory.

  • As others have said, dump the Drake Sword. It has awful scaling and can only do physical damage, which most enemies become resistant to around the time you get to Blighttown. If you ever get really stuck in an area and you can't summon someone, Dark Souls has some amazing wikis.

  • As soon as you can, get this: Chaos Zweihander +5: 10 humanity. ALL THAT POWER, CONSTANT 1K'S EVERYWHERE Oh, and you'll pretty much ravage every single boss in about 1-2 hits.

  • Dump that Drake Sword before you get to Anor Londo. I recommend a spear type weapon for new players.

  • Love the game but gave up after I killed the Blacksmith, attacked the fat knight at that giant gate, and killed the guy who you can remove your sins by paying him... Yes I'm trigger happy when it comes to NPCs.

  • Definitely dump your drake sword. Experiment with the movesets of different weapons and see which one works best with your build. The drake sword is a crutch and new players who keep using it will get -blam!-ed when they reach Blighttown/Sen's Fortress. So yeah, get a weapon that scales better. Some even say that the drake sword is a deliberate trap.

  • You are definitely at the point where the Drake Sword is about to become completely and utterly useless. Maybe you aren't quite there yet, but yes it is definitely time to start trying to find another weapon. Find a good one you can use temporarily until you get the lightning spear in Sen's Fortress. For Attunement slots, get two. If you have two, don't level it up any more because really all it does is absorbs your souls until you reach a certain tier to get another slot. It isn't worth it at this point, this early in the game. I have the maximum amount on my character, but he's also like level 219. But for somebody using melee, all you'll use it for is a heal spell every now and again (by the way if you don't have the heal miracle equipped, do that ASAP). So yeah I'd say get 2 attunement slots, then work on your endurance to around 40 and strength to... maybe 55. Then wing it. My character is a pyromancer magic user melee attacker. That's the cool thing- you are NEVER tied down in Dark Souls. You can make your character however you want. You don't need to start a new character to be a different 'class.' Just put on different gear. Dark Souls is VERY gear based instead of stat based. Long as you have the stats you need for certain things, you're in good shape.

  • No advice son, just use the runes on the floor when they appear, and vault yourself into the darkness.

  • Considering the only skill pyromancy needs is attunement, it'd be better if you just level'd it a bit on your current account; melee/pyro works pretty well for new players. And latio is a pretty decent weapon, last i checked it has the same stats as the uchi, so just upgrade it and ditch the drake sword. Also, you're in for fun after you ring the second bell
Keh heh heh
• Just going over your post: Get rid of the drake sword. What's your stats and build you have in mind? You can't just pick a random weapon, you have to take one that scales with your build and has a moveset you like. Magic is pretty overpowered, stick with melee if you want the "real" experience. If you want to make a magic class, take the sorcerer, not pyromancer. You can still become a pyromancer, it doesn't take much. I hope you rescued Laurentius when you were in the depths (he's stuck in a barrel close to the Butchers room). If you did, he'll now be at Firelink and will give you the pyromancy flame and sell you pyromancy spells.

      • Yeah, that Drake Sword is gonna lose it's luster soon, better replace it with something with better scaling. Remember, pick a weapon with the best moveset you like and upgrade it. Sometimes going by damage numbers isn't the best way.

        • I would recommend making a magic file if you want to play around with magic before investing the souls on your warrior file. It's not too hard to progress quickly once you've played it through once, and Heavy Soul Arrows instant kill half the beginning bosses.

        • So far I've made two large mistakes (that i know of). 1. I used the fire-keeper soul you get from the gargoyles, instead of taking it to someone to reinforce my estus flasks (I am constantly punching myself in the face over that one). 2. I accidentally hit the female undead merchant in the little sewer shortcut, and now she won't talk to me.
