I've noticed that there is a lot of discussion as to the use, intent, misuse, abuse, lack of direction, etc. when it comes to tags and tagging.
If I may suggest, I think that there could be a relatively simple answer. 3 kinds of tags, from 3 sources.
1: OFFICIAL
2: Semi-Official
3: user-created
Official tags would be ALL-CAPS. Only created and usable (in an OP) by Bungie-staff.
Examples: #BUNGIE #MAILSACK #DESTINY
Semi-Official would contain caps, but not be all-caps. Would be auto-created with a group creation (#Groupname) and if/when a particular 3rd-tier tag reaches a particular threshold (based on count, frequency, consistency and longevity) of usage (#Flood, #Off-Topic, #Politics, etc.)
user-created tags would be in all lower-case.

Edited by Guntyype: 1/18/2013 11:16:24 AMI would like to visit the site and other forums however the buttons to go to latest topics doesn't work on the iPhone. I can only look at popular topics. I personally also think this is a good idea.
-
This is an awesome idea. I'm still not used to the whole "tags" idea, and this would certainly make it easier to organize and follow topics.
-
I've never really understood how to use tags. Is this how the new forums are going to work? No categories, no organization? Just tags on everything? Doesn't seem like it will work.
-
I've been throwing out the idea of having a "mandatory" tag required for each post, where it comes from a group of maybe 6-8ish tags in a dropdown menu where you need to select one, and that would act as the old forums with #Flood #Septagon etc listed in that group. The rest would be optional, that way it combines the flexibility of the hashtags with the structure of having official sub-forums. Best of both worlds.
-
Could definitely work. I like the idea.

I say limit a post to three tags or so. Most of the posts with a ton of tags are just using things like their name and random things. There really isn't a reason to need more than 3. Even in this post #feedback and # BungieNext shouldn't really be separate tags, and #feature and #featurerequest are also basically the same. 3 is enough for a group to share a thread into two somewhat related tags, so I think that should about do it. Bungie employees could have a #all that posts in all the tags or something.
-
Just get rid of it all together.
-
I'd prefer this, good idea.
-
Do any other sites that use tags have a way to stop contradicting tags being put on the same threads?
-
Why can't we have official tags right above our followed tags that cannot be added into our posts? Instead, we click on the official tab(say "Community") and when we click "New Topic" it will be automatically tagged with community, meaning "Flood", "feedback" and whatever other official tags would be untaggable. It's sort of like what you're suggesting, but this way it would be more like the old forums.
-
Yea. A pretty good idea!
-
That sounds like it could help a lot.
-
Only if #FAVRE2016 gets to be official.
-
I like that idea.

I'm going to paste what I posted in a different thread yesterday. It's kind of poorly worded, but I think the general concept should be clear.
On tagging, I feel there could be some sense in having a public/private tag system - public tags being tags as they are now, they trend and so on, while private tags would be user-specific tags that would not trend and would only be publicly visible if the user wanted. Private tags could also be used to tag all threads, not just ones you've created. The use in this would be that people could effectively add greater depth to their saved threads - they could tag a thread as "funny" then go to their profile, click the "funny" tag and see all the posts they have personally tagged as "funny". Kind of like how on last.fm you can tag albums with the "albums I own" tag and people can, through your profile, click that tag and see all the albums you've tagged with that. It's not a big deal, but it's additions like this that would make the tag system was more useful.
Edited by DiabolicSpartan: 1/17/2013 2:06:31 AMHmm... This has potential. But instead of the CAPS idea wouldn't it be better to color code them? Example:
Official = Red Semi-Official = Orange User-created = Blue
Of course, the colors would be different but can you see where I'm coming from. This will allow for members to easily identify whether the tag is official, semi-official, or user-created.

the best and most simple way to kill any and all confusion, get rid of the tags altogether and go back to separate forums. Boom, done and done.
-
Replace semi-official with group and you got a deal.
-
#confused by hashtags because tiwtter is lame.
-
Recon, you have a thread.
-
-
no, i'd prefer a main tag and sub-tags. playing with caps looks ugly.
-
Used the #feedback to search for a general issues thread, but to no avail ill post it here in hopes to show it. Its a weird one that relates to missing options when navigating. Say i post in a group, in a private thread. >Make post >notification for reply to post >go to thread in group >no options that would be there when viewing group forum normally for example when you go to a private group into the forum you will have these on the right when vieing a thread. >About >Forum >Members >Followers But when you get tot he thread by using the notification menu, and even clicking view all replies you get this >Topics- which sends you to the mains >Explore tags >Followed Tags etc etc I think if you view a private forum post, the options for the private forum should appear there, just seems like common sense to em. If you have a better place to post this link me to it and ill post it there old man.

The capitals in the semi officials should always be the last letter
-
But this would ruin my thread tag of #Capitonswang, what will i do then recon?

are you sure you're not a java developer?
