Why SBMM is ruining the game, from a top player

Edit: I am really happy to see such great discussion in here, but after reading various replies, there seems to be a lot of people misinterpreting my post. Let me be clear - SBMM, in a vacuum, is a good thing. It promotes an even playing field where everyone has a chance to be on top and improve. I stated multiple times in my post that I am actually in favor of SBMM, but it must be contained to specific playlists, like Trials or Iron Banner. The core argument that I, along with many others are making is how Bungie is forcing SBMM across nearly every playlist. Revert back to having a casual connection-based group of playlists, and in addition create a ranked SBMM playlist or "league" where people can choose to participate in. I am speaking as someone who is in the top 1% in terms of K/D (2.9 in Clash/Control, 3.1 in Trials) and Win%. Please do not mistake me coming off as arrogant or elitist, I am merely providing a perspective. Skill-Based Matchmaking across most/all playlists needs to go. Period. My girlfriend and I use to always play Destiny together, mostly PvP, until last August when we started to do a bit of traveling together. We were thrilled to pick it back up, but already she wants to quit. We can no longer play together due to SBMM. I am posting from my new account, which I created solely to test out the new changes. I queued up with her for the first 10-15 games of my new Titan before my K/D started increasing, and we were being matched with players at her skill level. After multiple trial runs of queuing separately, the skill disparity between her games when she queued solo and with me, was enormous. When she queues solo now, she always gets at least 8-10 kills, but with me, she struggles to get 2-3. After 12 years of online gaming, I have never dealt with a system as frustrating as this. A competitive, evenly matched PvP environment is great, and it's one of the reasons why I love Trials in Destiny, but it needs to be an optional experience where players can choose to participate in when they want to. Bungie wants SBMM? Fine, then put it in Trials where it belongs. At the very least, there needs to be a clear separation between dedicated SBMM playlists, and CBMM playlists. Forcing it upon every player for every PvP match is not only absurd, it’s pushing people away from the game. Is this what Bungie wants? To alienate PvPers across different skill levels? You advertised your game to incentivize playing with one another. Aside from my girlfriend, my other friends I used to play with no longer want to queue with me or even with one another due to the skill disparity. The state of PvP is completely backwards right now. Originally introduced as the go-to competitive environment, Trials has now become the most laid back game type. Aside from the fact that my girlfriend can no longer enjoy playing PvP with me due to getting stomped by everyone in the game, I can barely stomach solo queuing myself. As I said earlier, I love competitive PvP, it is one of the reasons why I ran Trials so much every weekend, but having a hyper-competitive sweat fest forced on me every single game is ridiculous. After reading several topics similar to this, it’s pathetic how many players are using the “Oh look, another elitist try hard is butt hurt because he can’t roflstomp noobs anymore” card. This cannot be any further from the truth, one of the most enjoyable things for me was queuing up for Crucible to relax and try out some cool builds and weapon setups solo or with my friends. I can’t even do this anymore because every game I’m in is full of tryhards running top tier, cookie cutter builds. SBMM is also a nightmare for any good players due to how the search functions. Instead of being pure connection based, the system tries to match you primarily with players around your skill level, which are very likely in different countries. Because of this, you end up with laggy, teleporting players and a completely degenerative experience. Crimson doubles - what another great example at how terribly flawed SBMM is. My girlfriend and I were looking forward to doing doubles during this "Couples' Valentines Event." Across seven games with me, she got 3 kills; every game we were matched against people my skill level. My girlfriend can't even enjoy a special event MADE for friends and couples due to SBMM. I rarely post on forums, but it really depressed me when last night, during Crimson Doubles, my girlfriend flat out said “This is it, I quit. This isn’t even fun for me anymore.” She got the game for the sole purpose of playing PvP with me. Because of SBMM, the great experience we use to share has been taken from us. I could probably go on with this for a while, but I did the best I could to condense this and keep it concise. When Destiny came out, it immediately became my favorite game. The friends and connections I have made through this game will stay with me for the rest of my life. I actually found this incredibly difficult to write, due to what Destiny means to me and how frustrating it is having that ruined by Bungie’s warped perception of how PvP “should” be.

OMG guys!!! I just finished listening to the current Planet Destiny Podcast #57. They had as guests TrueVanguard and Destiny PVP lead designer Leif Johansen. Cue it up to 25:00 ---- At this mark, TrueVanguard starts explaining the SBMM experience as casual/low skilled players were having an enjoyable experience but as you move to the top levels of game play it was absolutely sweaty. This is what many of our top tiered players are saying here within this post. Later, TeftyTeft starts saying, "I want to have a relaxed beer and pizza experience, I don't want to put on my sweaty try hard pants.... but I can't because I'll be matched up against someone who is using the sweatiest meta load out, and I don't want to lose so I'll have to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.... we all get it right.... Okay, after hearing this and listening to Leif Johansen kick around the reasons why SBMM isn't going away and league matches aren't the answer, and why Custom matches won't work...etc.... He even compared some examples (and shot them all down) with COD, League of Legends etc.... I think ultimately IF high skilled players can't deal with playing with each other, well frankly, isn't that the price to pay for being top tier? Heavy is the crown and all fellas... LOL, at around the 33:30 mark after hearing Leif describe how miserable the experience was for low skilled players to be matched up with high skill players they realize how they (the high skilled players) were just bitching about SBMM without even considering the impacts to the low skilled players. Any who, this Podcast completely reinforces everything I've been saying here... The reason that it gets sweaty at the top tier is because "YOU" top players are doing that crap to each other. Thank goodness SBMM won't allow you to bring that garbage, no-fun, try-hard, drama to us lower skilled folk. And if you don't like it then LEAVE THE GAME! Many of us won't miss you and the community will benefit without your elitist snobbery. You guys are just getting tired of each other's crap, that's why you don't like SBMM. If only you could have a talk with each other and have an agreement that you won't utilize exploits, meta sweat-gear, T-Bag, etc... You'd be happy. Or would you? I don't think it's possible for you competitive types to be happy if you weren't always winning "with ease." Many of you make a convincing argument that you don't want to win by trying hard or putting in some kind of effort commiserate with your skills. Instead you want to beat up on low skilled players because that's more fun... Be a respectable high skill PVP player and run with your fellow players in SBMM. IF you don't like it then take a break, play something else... IF you need to vent, then at least be honest about it and start the conversation something like this: I am speaking as someone who is in the top 1% in terms of K/D (2.9 in Clash/Control, 3.1 in Trials) and Win%. Please "DO" interpret me coming off as arrogant or elitist, I am merely providing a perspective (hope OP doesn't mind me borrowing his opening line)... (begin Booger quote) "Damn, I miss stomping on low skilled players!" "High skilled players, can you feel me on this?" Remember before SBMM, when we could absolutely just slay low skilled players without even trying?" "I miss those days!" "These days, with SBMM, I'm not even guaranteed to win, let alone get an easy win." "I'm not having fun." LOL! Seriously, give it a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6hwSm4WyAM&list=PL-ncH812VtHEuig93Hjh_rLCTWqUC1-Ps&index=1

          • Everyone knows why they are doing this right? Their content is dead.... PVE players are bored.... bungie doesn't want to lose them so they catered to the casuals (that make up the majority)... They know the top tier players will keep playing destiny... and they know the lower tier players will play a different game...

          • Throughout the entire year one I never got an error code telling me I've been match making too long, doesn't matter what playlist. Today just for an experiment I searched rumble. Got 2 of these error codes in a row, before eventually finding a game of which I was in match making for roughly 3 minutes. This isn't right.

          • Wow well said buddy! I also did the Crimson Doubles event with my girlfriend, and we found ourselves wondering if any other couples were doing it :) The Crimson Doubles experience was awful, she was running 0-12ish every game. The only times we would win was if I had to do all the work, which I didn't mind but it wasn't much fun for her. So much for fun casual couple's PvP. I often do PvP while doing my cardio and used to enjoy casual gaming while doing so. Since I'm already sweating on the bike I'd rather not have to do it ingame as well. Now I see myself running 0.75 k/d while on the bike and 2.0+ when off it, making my SBMM probably all over the place.

The amount of people using utalitarian arguments without realizing that the players who sink more time into the game enjoy it just as much (if not more) than them, and simply can't anymore because of SBMM. Yeah, let's sacrifice the minority so the majority can enjoy themselves, that's a very progressive and not at all stale ideological stance. You are all intellectually deprived. First one to call me selfish and contradict themselves get a popsicle. #nosbmmwithoutdedicatedservers

                • Hate sbmm. Used to be one or two good players one each team then rest average so was a fun match. Now if you have two or so good games and next thing you know your playing people ten times better than you. It's no fun sweating every match. I agree 100% keep it iron banner and trials type matches. Atleast before you could use different weapons for fun and have decent matches. Now your stuck to the best weapons.

                • It actually needs to work. It's a broken sbmm. I can go against people that play waaaay more than I do, and I hate that shit. There needs to be a real skill based match making. That ALWAYS pairs you up against people equal to your skill. That's how you get better. You start to play quicker and harder, then you need a new challenge. Amd with a true sbmm the game would give it to you. Instead. I get shitty experiences. I love playing with friends. It's literally the only thing that brings me back. Other than that. I could break the disc and not be phased because it's in the toilet now. And the community is complete garbage. Like 80% of the people are the cowards standing behind easy kills and cheap tactics because they see someone on YouTube do it, and they give 0 constructive criticism back because they would rather use the next best things and not give into the facts that the game sucks. The matchmaking has been a joke since Taken King dropped. At least in year one. It was fun. Balanced. (As much as I hate that sentence, it was more balanced than it is now) I never complained back in the day. I had 3 problems. That was it. Snipers should sway when zoomed, shotguns shouldn't kill from 50 meters away, and the damn hand cannons shouldn't have even had range to match a scout. That makes no sense even in a literal world. Unfortunately the community, and Bungie doesn't care. They just keep going on saying, adapt and "git gud" but you can't adapt gunplay. You can adapt your playstyle to better accommodate your comfort zone, but you can't change what you're gunplay other than getting a better aim, and knowing when to attack. But hey. I haven't played over 200+ hours on all 3 characters to know the ins and outs of everything.

SBMM is going to suck for the top players, of course it is, that's your own fault. For us, less than 1KDers, SBMM is all that makes crucible fun... EDIT: As for playing with people of your GFs skill level, make sure she's the host and fireteam leader. That seemed to help us during CD. but in the end, if you really are about just having fun and trying new builds, a few deaths/losses should matter to you should it?

                • Ditto to this. The new matchmaking is great in real competitive playlists like trials... However you just wanna chill out n enjoy a nice game of control or somet, but it so difficult now as others are trying solid to win. Pvp defo not as fun when you don't wanna be glued to the TV proper concentrating on your game. Bungie give us a break for pvp. Where's the casual playlists at

                • Create a game mode that SBMM is disabled. I highly doubt it be working for top tier players, low tiers like me ain't stupid enough to go into that game mode where top tiers are waiting to stomp us, in the end it would be top tier vs top tier.

                • One of the problems with cbmm was that it was only a "casual" mode for top players. It was sweaty for everyone else. If you have separate sbmm and cbmm playlists, a lot of players who aren't top tier would play sbmm. The cbmm playlist would just end up being top tier only and you would have the same situation as you have now
