One of my dearest friends on Destiny has passed away yesterday. Derek Solis died from lymphoma cancer on the morning of October 11, 2015.
Our friendship went quite a ways before the beta. I met him and his older brother, Kevin, in an online lobby for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 not long after the game's release. As more fighters came out around that time we'd cycle between them, and eventually League of Legends.
Some time after Kevin got a job that required more time away from home, Derek told me about the beta for Destiny. He told me of its curious blends and had a spare code for access. So I decided to join him in his ventures through the beta. We cursed at the walker, tried to punch Sepiks Prime point blank, and even stumbled into the Refinery on accident while patrolling, via the Grottos. Somehow I managed to navigate past the high level Hive without so much as a scratch. He wasn't too far behind.
We played through the story after the initial release, enjoyed the first two expansions, falling short of completing Skolas before the year ended.
Throughout this time we had half-jokingly fleshed out the backstory of our main Guardians: Derek's Awoken Warlock and my Human Hunter. If we had ever gone through with writing it all down we would've called it the "Weeping Blade" series. Our ventures would've included a subplot relating to Thorn and Last Word.
When Taken King released we went through the bulk of the story together and we were so hyped to do to the raid. We were even contemplating the concept of a Taken Guardian using Thorn as a catalyst for our Guardians' story.
I didn't hear of Derek's lymphoma or his death until last night. Apparently they learned of the cancer last week. It was so soon.
He was a brother. A friend. A creative soul. And a Guardian.
RIP Derek Solis

I lost my best friend in a gang fight when I was fourteen. No one knew he was in a gang. He was shot, his cousin came running to his aunt's late at night with a stab wound in his shoulder and side. I didn't speak for two days straight. My most sincere condolences, fellow Guardian. He may be gone, but his light lives on forever

Sorry to hear about your friend...well at least as people say he's in a better place without pain. Sooo sorry.
-
May he Rest in Peace... Never easy to hear about these sorts of occurrences. He may be gone but I'm sure you'll never forget him. Now get that story written. I'm sure if you finished writing it he'd be up in heaven smiling at you writing all of your memories with him down. Eyes up, guardian.
