Oops... Can I get that sword back?
So, I'd managed to merge my legendary void sword into another piece of gear. I was trying to do the opposite therefore deleting my sword! Is there any way for me to recover this?

As you probably already know, most of the decisions we make in Destiny are permanent, and can't be undone. That's why it's important to be SUPER careful with these new weapons that you don't want to lose. Take advantage of the lock function, and always pay attention when infusing/dismantling!
