Confused about the end of the Taken King story? Let's figure it out. [SPOILERS]

SPOILERS AHEAD: IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE TAKEN KING STORY LINE, LEAVE THE THREAD NOW Alright everyone. Let's start at the beginning. I'm going to lay out simply what happened and interject a few of my own questions/theories. During the opening cutscene we have a narrative being told by Mara Sov, the Queen. She talks about her birth (being transformed into an Awoken) and then describes how Oryx has come to destroy everything, and she "bows to no one". She then unleashes magic space balls that destroy every other Hive ship except for the Dreadnaught. Then it gets interesting.... The Queen says:
You and I know how this ends. We've known since you escaped from that....pit. The Awoken have played their part. This was all part of the plan. Guide them, my Hidden friend. It is all up to you now.
Though it may be obvious to some, the Queen is very clearly talking about Eris. We know from the Reef grimoire that Eris and the Queen knew each other, and were planning to take down Oryx. If that wasn't enough to confirm, the Queen talks about how Eris knew this would end after she escaped from the pit, and calls her, her Hidden friend (a title that Eris holds). Seemingly, the Queen and Eris both knew that they alone could not take down Crota, they understood their fate before it happened. They needed you, a Guardian to defeat him. That is why the Queen asks Eris to guide them (Guardians, Vanguard) and why she plays a pivotal role in directing the main story. What happened to the Queen? Did she die? Perhaps. But another grimoire card tells us that Ulderon believes she is still alive and is repairing his ship on Mars to search for her. And, if the Queen can manifest giant magic spaceballs that wipe out ships...she is one tough cookie. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now at the end of the story, we get a very ominous cutscene narrated by Eris. She says:
My Queen. You were right. The Guardian was the key. For the first time the whispers are silent. It is done. I have accepted my fate. I will not fail.
During this monologue, we see Eris remove a shard from Oryx's fallen sword. Clearly, it has a purpose. Eris explains that your Guardian was the key to defeating Crota, and her mind is now rid of the whispers of the Hive. Now, when Eris says she has accepted her fate, what is she referring to? Anything at this point is pure speculation. To me, it sounds like she is doing something she does not necessarily want to do (perhaps betray you), but must. The shard she took from Oryx's sword is not unlike the ones you see in the swords you can now wield, but it must have some sort of special power that Eris needs for her plan. Perhaps with Oryx gone, she seeks to harness that power to control the Hive... Your Guardian is playing out events you do not have control over. You are a pawn right now in the scheme of the Queen, Eris, and even the Nine (whom we do no yet know much more about). What are your thoughts on the story? Are we about to be betrayed? (There is a song in the Taken King soundtrack titled, "Betrayal")

The shard from Oryx's blade is given to us to create our own sword. I believe she's accepted the fact that she is going to die on whatever quest she's currently undergoing, but I do not believe it's malicious. I believe that Oryx is not the end. He may have been the beginning. His two sisters are not as powerful, but they're still quite godlike in their own right.

      • Couple of things stood out to me. Oryx seemed unconcerned at his defeat, smug even. It felt like he was thinking "Yeah, this ain't over chump!" The statue of Crota's brother? Jorix or something like that? Where is that tool? And yeah, the Queen and Eris... I've felt something was off about her since she came back with 3 freaking eyes, lol. The ending drew my attention to them even more. She's basically part hive or something?

        • The shard is the same one that you put in your sword and by accepting her fate I thinks to avenge the queen by killing the hive

        • All questions (least most where eris and oryx are concerned) should be resolved by playthrough of kings fall raid. (Releases 09/18/15)

There is no story =) Jokes aside, I had some of the same thoughts as you. Although I think you have a small typo, she's pulling the shard from Oryx's sword - not Crota's. I'm not sure if that distinction really matters in the grand scheme of things. I think Eris has a purpose specific to the Hive, and her stay in Crota's pit wasn't completely circumstantial. nor do I think Oryx is "dead". If Oryx has the power to take creatures out of one plane of existence and push them into another - he likely has something for himself. Note his ominous laughter as he falls. Is it possible the "Taken King" becomes a "Taken" himself? I wonder if that's what we will fight in the raid. Obviously it doesn't make sense to kill him in the main story and then fight him in the raid...unless he's not "dead". Just some of my thoughts.
