Awoken Part 3

"Do you know where we are, Vanguard scout Amar?" Varin said in a formal tone. "Your tomb, monster." Amar replied in a hate-filled tone. Varin looked at his feet and laughed. "That is more correct than you know. This facility was a research station during the Golden Age, one of several across the system. We studied the Traveler’s light and its effects on various life and environments." He put a hand on the console at his side. "This was my work station. I was here ‘til the end, one of the very first Awoken. This is where my ghost found me." "What matter is the past? Man once monster now, I am your cleaver and executioner. The light in this room has given me the power I need to end you." Amar took a single step toward Varin, but the hunter remained in place, a calm confidence in his composure. "Before we get to that, would you like to know what we found in the later years, before the Fallen ravaged our precious little planetoid?" Amar said nothing, but covered the next three paces in a single bound, swinging both fists down hard toward Varin. He completed the arch of his strike, both fists hitting the floor in unison, lightning rippled in a ring away from him and the ground shook. Directly ahead of him a shockwave buckled grates and cracked the concrete floor as more lightening erupted from it then struck a wall and stopped. He stood, and looked around, Varin was gone, the computer he stood near, and other pieces of nearby old tech were destroyed. "Face me coward." Amar said to the room. "We found that light and dark are like sides of a coin. Where one is, so is the other. In a way the collapse is a result of our hubris. We weren't hedonists, well, most of us weren't, but we used the light copiously did we not? We were out of balance. We were a beacon too big to be ignored by the dark." his voice was hard to place, but Amar could tell he was in the darkness to his left side. "Do I look like a Warlock to you? I am here to destroy you! I care not for the history of our bygone era. You are my enemy and I yours, FACE ME!" Amar challenged as he strode back to the light side of the room, and felt the power there pour into him. "Do you know why they pick among the dead for Guardians? Detachment, for one, no family, you're only friends are other warriors aren't they?" Amar threw a piece of debris into the darkness. "Come on!" "They choose the dead because it is easier to fill an empty vessel with light than a living one. A living being has both light and dark in them at all times. You and once I, have been and had been scrubbed clean, remade, *forged* as paragons in light." "Stop your yammering." The Titan muttered then bound hard into the dark before him striking again as hard as he could. Momentarily the dark receded under the assault and to his right, still on the *far side* of the room stood his quarry. Amar turned as quick as he could and lunged again, this time one hand outstretched, the other pulled back in a fist. Before he could complete the motion he hit the floor, the dark flooded back into place, and pushed him down robbing him of his power. "You are incomplete. That's why you've never been to the City. The tower yes, many times I'm sure, seen smug Rahool and wise Zavala. But the City, Titan, no Guardian strides among the citizens they protect. Why should a weapon be allowed near garden tools?" Varin’s voice was everywhere, pushing down on Amar with the dark, draining him of strength. "What say you, Titan?" Varin asked in mock pomp, "Will you crush the man before you, then die alone under the ice of a forgotten rock? Or would you let me help you?" "He- help..?" his voice was smaller than he'd have liked. It was meant as a jest, a challenge, it sounded pleading, pathetic. As he realized this there was a hard jolt, he was thrust up and back. He struck the wall on the light side of the room, bounced off and hit the floor bent on one knee already feeling re-energized. Before him Varin stood at the border to the dark. "You were lying weren't you?" Varin said conversationally, a smirk in his voice. In response Amar stood and swung, missing the hunter’s head by millimeters. Instead of retreating to the dark, Varin stepped into the light completely, meeting the Titan’s strength with his own speed. Each movement between the two was measured, calculated. Amar thrust a fist upward hard, Varin slid to the side and jabbed the Titan’s open flank. In response Amar rotated into a feigned kick, as Varin stepped back, the Titan came forward and allowed momentum to carry him into a jumping strike, hitting Varin in the chest with his knee. The hunter stumbled backward, fell, and then rolled into a low crouch. Amar was already on top of him both fists raised, lightning beginning to arc off his armor and the floor. Before he could bring his weight and light down, the hunter was up, both hands closed into fists. He struck the Titan’s chest plate as his body went rigid. Black fire rippled up Varin’s back and through his arms hitting Amar like a cannon, throwing him across the room and into one of the water filled tanks.
