If old gear becomes obsolete...
I will be extremely disappointed if old items become obsolete in the future and are unable to be brought forward. Here is why:
1) VARIETY
Being able to max level anything with the arrival of the House of Wolves was a great evolutionary progression for Destiny that offered an insane scope for variety not previously realised with the game (before the House of Wolves, everyone had Raid or Iron Banner gear for the maximum level). In this current era, players wear all sorts of gear. Variety is good because it makes engagements more interesting and therefore entertaining.

- Iron Banner gear
- Crota's End gear
- Exotics
post-House of Wolves players:
- Iron Banner gear
- Crota's End gear
- Vault of Glass gear
- Trials of Osiris gear (and Watcher's gear)
- Prison of Elders gear
- Faction gear
--- New Monarchy gear
--- Dead Orbit gear
--- Future War Cult gear
- Crucible gear
- Vanguard gear
- Exotics[/spoiler]
2) IDENTITY
The gear I use is my identity in the world of Destiny. If old gear becomes obsolete, especially armour, I have two options; become handicapped and get left behind, or change who I am. Neither of those options are cool.

These are just speculatory concerns based on having not read or heard nothing from nowhere. =)

2 RepliesI've posted novels in several threads like this before, all I'm going to say is this Weapons? I disagree, no one is ever going to change from Fatebringer BlackHammer Gjallarhorn So there is no variety in that, but I see where you're coming from, it's just not going to happen with the vast majority Armour? I semi-agree while it be cool to have armour ascendable, they'd need to make Etheric light (Or whatever they use) extremely rare, not throw it around like they did in House of Wolves. The way I see it? Keep the exotics ditch the rest, I'll admit this is partially bungies fault for why we keep the same weapons, but things like Fatebringer and the lot were meant to be left behind in the first place. Way they should work it is that there are several ways to hit max level from The Taken King, but from what I've been hearing and reading Light Levels are disappearing with The Taken King and it'll be more XP based, means you can use whatever armour you want then so it's a win, win right?

I think a lot of people just bought gauntlets that had hand cannon reload perk, got etheric light to ascend that, heavy ammo boots and a chestpiece, then ignored much of the other armor. The vendor armor sets all have mismatched perks and stat rolls too. You would have to grind for a long time to get gear which is actually usable as a set. If you play crucible you'll see a lot of people wearing dead orbit gauntlets, iron banner chest, raid boots and exotic helm - looking ugly as hell.

I'm cool with new gear and the variety of weapons but if BUNGIE must make old legendaries obsolete because they want us to use TTK weapons then the must not be planning on making things that will replace or surpass VOG weapons. Have you seen the prison weapons? They are wack as -blam!-. If the are going to get rid of old legendaries I want something that will adequately replace my fatebringer. Not another six dreg pride with thrall burn.

2 RepliesPeople, like me, were being gear gated' out of doing events. I was 29 until 2 weeks before The Dark Below dropped on 2 characters because I couldn;t get gear drops to get me to 30. Because I wasn;t 30 no team would take a 29 into VoG. Thats why the change. and I;m ok with it. The suros pack you get for pre-ordering will have way more powerful gear than your old legendary, and within a few hours your old armour ain;t even gonna matter. You can wear any armour you like now. It doesn;t have to be legendary, but I;m sure that there will a ton more customization options for armour on TTK I;m actually happy I can change up my loadout from the 6-8 weapons that I use constantly and hopefully Crucible wont be as stale with thorn being nerfed.

I'm ok with the change like you said variety, you know as well as me that is things stayed the same you'd still see people using thorn and fate bringer guns like that for the next 10 years They do this with every mmo so I'm fine with it

I don't think armor is increasing in defense but more of just your overall character. Speculation of course, but from GI it seemed more like the breaking of light level was to allow you to run whichever armor you wanted with said perks. Of course legendaries still beat out commons.

Gotta agree with the identity part. Everyone essentially looks the same, there's no real defining individual trademark for guardians other than a small pool of shaders to select from...

I agree. Im thinking the reasoning behind ditching all the weapons is that some of the e legwndaries are alrrady pretty op (ie vog weapons). To make the new weapons usable they would have to match or beat the old powerhouses. If thats the case for the next 10 years thjngs would get insane. By year 5 your auto rifles would be getting 3 hit body shot kills. Im not happy about the legendaries but im hoping it will be just as fundiscovering others

3 Repliesi agree with both points, though it still seems as though we all look the same, as most people wear the most powerful gear but i agree about variety, more choices are better! why limit us? is it because they programmed themselves into a brick wall in regards to the vault space? they knew too many guns would be an issue, sot hey simply will ruint eh old guns so people dismantle them, and hopefully forget about vault space?

1 ReplyIt will not be "obsolete" you can still use them and they will still drop, but this is how a MMO works if you didn't know: new gear will be better than older, and there will be more gear than vanilla destiny, HoW and TDB combined so there will be a lot of weapons to chose from

Identity? ROFL. In games like this you change gear all the time. No point in getting attached to it. The new ttk gear will look fine I'm sure. As far as weapons are concerned, same thing applies. As much as I like my fatebringer, this was bound to happen sooner or later. In fact, I was surprised they even let us upgrade stuff like that in HoW. They shouldn't have, because that is why everyone is acting like its the end of the world now.

If old gear becomes old I have a tantrum. Surely bungie can prevent old gear from becoming old gear? If not then what is the point? I'm really confused about how after time went by and new gear came out, this old gear became old gear, I mean WTF is that?
