Disclaimer: this post is simply an idea created for fun. Images were taken from the interwebs, but modified by yours truly.
I'm one of the many players that has played his heart out in the world of Destiny; mostly in the PvE area. Throughout the hours I've frequently come across the same scenario: I'll get a new legendary weapon with some fun-looking stats and I have to ask myself, "is this worth keeping?" Most of the time the answer is, "It's kinetic damage, so... shard it." and I move on with my day. And this is how my idea was born: Damage Shards.
A Damage Shard is a legendary item that drops, extremely rarely, in events such as the Weekly Nightfall and HM Raids. The types you can get are (of course): Solar Shard, Arc Shard, and Void Shard. Once you have one of these rarities, you can merge them with any Legendary or Exotic weapon to add an additional damage type.
For example, we could create a Void Fatebringer for greater Minotaur-killing awesomeness. Or maybe we can add some usefulness to our trusty Suros Regime by giving it Solar Damage. And heck, let's throw in an Arc Damage Mythoclast.
These crystals would add an interesting buff to literally any Legendary or Exotic weapon. And, let's face it, we could use a little variety.
Potential Limitations and Usage. Applying a Damage Shard would require the assistance of the Gunsmith. Once applied, the only way to return the Shard for use in another weapon would require dismantling the weapon or paying a heavy toll to remove it without dismantling. If a Shard is applied to a weapon that already has a damage type you will have the option to toggle between one damage type and the other (like Murmur). Only one shard may be applied to a weapon at a time.
And that's all I have! Hope you guys enjoy the idea. Do you think it's practical enough to add? Would it crush game balance, or open it up? Leave your thoughts :)

EDIT: I'll add some of the ideas and suggestions from the comments you're making.
• Branch the drops to ToO (flawless).
• Limit application exclusively to Legendary weapons and/or Kinetic Weapons.
• Assuming the above ^ idea wasn't included, the secondary burn could have a 10%-20% nerf (call it an "Artificiality Debuff").
• Using a Shard is a 100% commitment, you will never be able to get it back.
