How much of it is about ego?

Before you read on, understand I am not coming after, making fun of or disrespecting anyone in any way. I simply want to hear your opinion on this. A friend that I play Destiny with occasionally and I were playing last night and he asked, "I thought you had beat Crota on hard?" I replied, "I have a few times and tried many more." Insert LONG pause, then he continued, "Then why are you not sporting Gloo Hoo?" I replied, "At least with how I have my characters set up I think that shader looks stupid on them." Without hesitation he replied, "So what man! It shows other players what you have done." Now personally not in regards to the shaders but I will admit that occasionally I like to sport a particular weapon that I am proud of while in the Tower. However, most of the time I really don't think about it, which by extension means I really don't care what other players think of my gear is that a bad thing? Does that mean I don't really care about the game? Or does that mean I am secure in my sexuality/manhood/gamer rep? lol Seriously, I would be curious how many of you actually put any thought into what gear you will sport, solely for the purpose of getting the recognition of other players?

  • None. Of course I've been toying with the stupid notion (I did say stupid did I?) of wearing glowhoo/crota's end garment to get a crux.... Evening using and employing the Eidolyn Ally (yep...stupid) Yeah..... stupid.

    • Sometimes for crucible I like to rock the sickest armor set in the game that I have never seen anyone else wear :) The only other thing is equipping shotguns when a hard VoG group is a bunch of pricks and then shutting them up by being the last one to die XD but that was before the buff and before lvl 31-32.

    • I sport my Scar of Radegast emblem, Gold Spiral and either my New Monarchy/Dead Orbit/Jolders Iron Sash. People have asked my if I beat hard mode before after not sporting Glow hoo (almost got kicked... lol first few weeks after hard dropped), to which I aimed both my fang and my WoC at his dome and asked him if I had before. I never sport a "trophy" weapon around because they are fairly generic. I prefer the aesthetic items like the marks/bonds and emblems to speak out instead of the weapons.

The simple answer? Yes. But there are worse problems in the world than vanity. I'll admit when I hit 30 and 32 I wore the armor everywhere (even in Crucible when I had armors with perks better suited for it) as a symbol of my efforts. But that always passed pretty quickly. I just rock whatever I'm digging at the time. I'm old enough to honestly not really care what some random person in the Tower/Fireteam is going to think about me.

    • Glowhoo looks ugly as shit on anything other than my Hunter and I still use Chatterwhite for him instead.

    • I only wore it the first week Crota had a hard mode. After that it's just... Ugly!

    • im sorry man your friend is kinda a noob, ALOT of people have that shader, and you get it for only ONE hard raid completion, that really isnt impressive at all, considering 95% of the people that play this game on a daily basis would have the shader, no one really gives a shit about it. not trying to be a dick, just speaking truth

    • I wanna look awesome and I'm not big on Glowhoo. Though I think it's pretty cool that people show what they've done / what they dig. A lot of gear choices have to be based on how or what you're playing that messing with color ends up being the best way to personalize.

I've just accepted that I will never look the way I want to in this game. Until I can transmogrify my armor I frankly don't care at all what other people think. We have no way of attaining gear that expressly displays our skill as a players. You can be carried through the raids, or get really lucky drops, or you can even slow grind through Iron Banner. Point is if there was a challenge mode that rewarded different gear or shaders then I would wear it. However, none of that currently exists. I would gladly do solo challenges for the purpose of obtaining shaders and emblems that display my completion of set challenges. Thanks for sharing OP

    • Couldn't care what people think. If they are influenced by a hideous shader then so be it. I still won't wear it. I am fond of the revenant shader tho.

    • I have exotic weapons and armor, but I occasionally use them. Most of the time I have Legendary gear equipped, sometimes Rare. Thing is, I prefer the aesthetic diversity of the Rare items.

    • I used to wear glowhoo on all 3 in the first few weeks of hard mode when it was still rare(ish) but now favour goldspiral on my hunter, then again maybe that's showing what I've done as well subconsciously?

    • If you're 32, then who really gives a shit? Glowhoo is an ugly ass shader that means exactly dick. Everyone and their gay uncle has cheesed that raid, so there's zero style points for Glowhoo.

    • Clearly a noob, Glow Hoo is piss easy to get. It's all about faction shaders, bro.

      • Sure the first time I beat hard mode I wore it with great pride for a few days. But now I could care less. There's really no "bragging rights" to be had there.

I wear my Last Word on my hip in the tower and almost everywhere I go. I like to think my hunter is good with snipers so I carry my sniper rifle around with my Last word on my hip. It feels..................... It feels right. :)

      • I try to make my guardians look pretty. Match and sparkle. I level up everything so I can switch it up. The only time I worry about other people looking at my gear is when I'm jumping into a fireteam to do a raid, and the party leader needs to see what everyone has to come up with a strategy. Sometimes when I'm in the tower if I see a particularly good-looking guardian I'll inspect, but I don't pass judgement.. lol

        • None. If something is aesthetically pleasing to me, then I'll rock it. If people really need to see what I've done, they can just look at my stats or whatever.

        • I put a lot of thought into my gear. I have 3 characters each with a great raid set and I'm working on PvP armor sets for them now. Stats, abilities, how shaders effect the look are all important to me. The opinions of others are not.
