Teaching My Girlfriend To Play- A Lost Cause?

My girlfriend likes to play games- most of them are just on her phone. But a few years back I got her into Minecraft. She loved the game and still does, but ever since Destiny came out that's all I've really wanted to play. That and the occasional GTA. She knows I like to play Destiny, and I've tried to show her how to play a few times. She loves the customization. She seems to be semi-interested in the story. But here's the problem. This is her first FPS. I play this game with my younger brother, his friend, and my best friend. I'd love to get her to do Raids with us because they can really be a blast! But she isn't showing much sign of improvement. She's afraid to get out in the enemies faces and kick alien ass. (She runs scout rifles and snipers). She doesn't understand the mechanics of the game very well, like public events, the story, and intellect/strength/discipline. But when she's over and I walk up to grab groceries at night I sometimes come home to her playing Destiny. Do you think she could be raid material some day? I'd love to play with her and have her know what she's doing! But is this going to be too hard of a game for her to learn how to run a FPS? The shooting in this game is really solid, but I'm just not sure. Should she maybe stay away from the missions for now? Maybe run patrols?

  • Some day. I've run my girlfriend through the campaign and spartan ops missions in the halo game series, even reach and odst, normal difficulty is sometimes difficult for her, heroic is my casual difficulty, so there's a skill difference, but when it comes to co op we do well with her working longer range and me handling cqc. The important part for her is to find what she likes to do and let her do it. Experience comes with time.

  • My girlfriend plays cod like a champ, but hates when I play destiny. I tried to get her to come play and when I did, she made it to level 3, get off for the night, never got back on destiny. Lol so now I have to play cod still with her and destiny in my spare time.

  • Girls start off best with auto rifles and shotguns honestly. They're easier to aim. Once you get her hooked, then you start bringing out the harder guns.

  • For those of us that grew up with games, it seems a little ridiculous that anyone would have trouble with destiny. But I've been doing console fps since the original halo, and fps in general since doom and wolfenstein. (shut up, I'm not that old, really.) That's two decades of experience working on a skill set. Not exactly something you can expect someone to pick up and start performing at that level. It's just something that she'll have to work on. I bet if you took her through the raids a few times, she would be able to pull her weight. The hardest part of the raids is learning the mechanics, and choosing the proper loadout. Teach her that, and the skill will come.

Dude, she could play. She wants to, so it will click eventually. Have her play the story from start to finish. She will get it.

    • Almost sounds like my gf she hates games where we have to play against each other and wants to play games together but showing her how to play is rough. She shoots but she doesn't aim or move (she has a hard time with that). So a dreg will be right in front of her and she's aiming in left field shooting. It's gonna be rough especially since it's her first FPS but give it time and be patient.

    • Lol sounds like me when my brother was trying to get me into halo 3. I was really bad at playing, I would die a lot and get lost in the story missions. But after a few months I started getting good at the game. Just give her time she will eventually get the concept of a fps.

    • Every player has a play style. You just described your girlfriends, she runs scout rifles and snipers and is afraid to get up close. So she is a mid/long range fighter. Let her get used to her load out and I promise she will be raid material. But also introduce her to other fps's just so she can get a better feel for mechanics. Good luck!

      • I can see why she doesn't understand the story very well... You should maybe think of having her play the Halos (on easy/normal) to get a better idea of FPS. The story is far more interesting, and so are the characters. CE is the game that got me into playing video games. Destiny quickly becomes an RPGMMO though, if she doesn't like grinding... oh well.
I have a niece who will play Halo campaigns with me non stop, she's 10. She does not like Destiny, mostly too complicated and the story sucks, her words.
• My advice would be, don't just push her in the pool and tell her to swim. My wife has started playing Destiny at some point and she was really bad at the beginning. First she just played around with my character when I was doing something else. She shot a few guys, got used to the controls etc. Then she tried playing the story with a character she made but died on even easier missions. She lost interest but she really loved doing public events. So she played event after event after event after event. (And got me many marks etc) Then I introduced her to strikes, she got interested in it and did the Devils Lair strike like 20 times or more haha. She did some other strikes afterwards and now she JUST plays Crucible. I think the whole game can be really intimidating, try picking some small portions she would like. Maybe play together and have her do certain bits.

        • Let her screw around in patrol and do missions to to get your faction rep up and have her learn the mechanics really well and weapons with their different upgrades.

          • If you get home and find her playing Destiny, that's probably a sign that she is trying. :) My very first FPS was Halo: Reach. My husband (at that time he was my boyfriend) taught me how to play Reach. I was (still am) a PlayStation person and I struggled real hard with the 360 controller. But after playing, failing, playing, practice in customs, multiplayer, it finally clicked. Once I could finally hold my own, he taught he taught me strafing and shooting. Boy was I horrible in Reach, but by Halo 4 I was pretty good. Now I play Battlefield, CoD and of course Destiny. The hubbs and I just did a duo Crota's End today and completed the entire raid. I was sword runner too for the first time. In short, yes its very possible for her to learn. Its just going to take practice and time. She'll get it. :)
