Like the title says, it is quite obvious that the next DLC House of Wolves (HoW) will make or break Destiny. (Summary at bottom if you aren't a reader) Thus far the game has survived on a few things such as hype and gameplay (which I think is very good). Hype helped Destiny sell tons of copies and has also led to high expectations. I don't think many will argue that many of those expectations have not been met. The main shortfall when it comes to the expectations is the fact that there is a serious lack of content, both story-wise and gameplay-wise (activities, raids, strikes, playable areas..etc.). Typically a game that suffers from these issues would be played for a little while, then boredom sets in and they move on. But many haven't, why? The promise of future content, the promise that a story and more gameplay was right around the corner, With this promise I, like many, bought the season pass (The Dark Below and The House of Wolves) . So upon release I was excited up until I completed the VoG a couple of times and started my second character (Warlock), Then came a lull where I had nothing interesting to do. A few weeks later TDB came out. Again, I was hyped and again after beating CE a few times, I got bored. Real bored. It did not help that Bungie decided that game testing was not a priority (I mean how many glitches and obvious exploits have been uncovered so far??). But they patched, and patched and patched some more. This really didn't inspire confidence and may have led to people thinking about not doubling down on TDB or even HoW. Even worse Bungie states that you don't need the expansion to play, then goes on to make expansion stories and strikes the Daily Heroic or the Weekly. Now, here we are again. Many are bored. Many have hopes Many bought the Season Pass. I would guess that for those that bought the season pass this is make or break time. It is for me. Now imagine the situation where HoW lives up the the original hype, all those expectations would be met and the potential of this game realized.. Then that momentum carries people to buy the anticipated "comet" release and at an estimated cost of $60, Bungie/Activision would reap huge benefits and much of the past mistakes might be forgiven and people can't wait for what comes next. But if it doesn't, I don't see how anyone in their right mind keeps throwing money at this game. Many would have spent close over $80 and still feel the game is incomplete. That would be it. Kaput. Game is done. Now in looking at other DLCs, I have not found one that meant so much to the overall health of the game or to the health of such a successful game (money-wise). If I'm wrong here, please let me know but at this point I don't know of any other game that hinges more on a DLC than Destiny does on HoW. To Summarize (for those that don't like too many words): - Destiny has tons of hype that led to high expectations. - Destiny thus far has fallen short on many of those expectations because of a lack of story and playable content. - For many, boredom has set in along with frustration of not realizing their full potential. - Many have bought the Season Pass and for them this is it, either live up to expectations or lose those players (and likely much of the more active base) - If they live up to expectations (or get close) then the game and franchise go on to more success - If they don't no one wastes another dollar and Destiny, while a financial success already, dies away. - No other game has hinged more on the success of a DLC than Destiny does on HoW This may be obvious to some, but for the sake of discussion I put it out there. What do you think? Is HoW make or break for Destiny? Has any other DLC meant more to a game? *These are my opinions, I don't pretend like this analysis is definitive but I think what I set forth is a likely scenario. The point is to have a discussion about what HoW means to the overall game and franchise* *On a personal note I really hope they come through, I believe this game still has tons of potential*
