Experienced warlocks' advice wanted!

EDIT 2: Again, thank you everybody for sharing your tips and advice with me. I’m sure there are other fresh warlocks (and probably some experienced ones as well) that have found some new and interesting information in here. (I know I sure did.) It’s also fantastic to see that the positive replies by far outweigh the few negative ones I got. It is really refreshing to see that there are still so many of you willing to help out complete strangers and are willing to spend a small or sometimes even a very large part of your time to share your preferred setups and/or give your opinion on the matter. I value all the input and replies I got. Regardless if other people agree or disagree with what you are saying. A lot of it comes down to personal preference and it’s only natural that not everybody will have the same opinion. In the end, there is no truly right or wrong. What works for you does not necessarily work for me and vice versa. I will be trying the different perks, exotics and setups out for myself of course and I’m already looking forward to unlocking more of the skill tress of both subclasses along the way. All the replies I received from you all have given me some very valuable input that lets me already start thinking and planning ahead. My natural ‘feel’ with the warlock will only grow after getting some more playtime and experience with it, but the comments on this post have given me a bit of a head start. I always try to thank each poster personally, but I can’t keep up with the posts, I’m sorry. Thanks you all again for sharing your advice with me! Any tips on warlock set up? I recently started a warlock (only up to level 15 yet) but I’m looking for some tips from experienced warlocks about the ideal setup of the skilltree for sunsinger and voidwalker. EDIT: Thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions! It's greatly appreciated! I know it's mostly personal preference and I will of course be trying the perks and combinations out for myself. I'm just trying to get some tips about your personal preference and set up. I honestly don't understand why I'm getting all that flak from some of you. I've posted many questions here on the forum and have tried to answer questions by other players as much as I can to the best of my abilities. This is the first time I've been getting these kind of negative responses. Luckily there's still much more positive and helpful answers, but it's still showing a trend. I don't mind the people saying I should try it out for myself, that's a valuable piece of advice in itself, but some of you are just plain negative without willing to contribute in a constructive way to the discussion. It's kind of sad actually, I thought this place was supposed to be here for asking questions and sharing your destiny experience. If you guys keep this up, you'll end up with forum filled with troll and whine posts.

  • I played all 3 classes during the Beta, and due to time constraints, settled on Warlocks as my class of choice for Destiny. I have now around 300 hours played as a warlock. Firstly what you should know about warlocks is that there is no 'best build' that you should be using for everything. Warlocks are incredibly versatile. With sunsingers a lot of people fall into the trap of using fireborn. I would strongly advise against this. While fireborn is useful for certain sections of the hard raid, such as confluxes where you can go a long time without the opportunity to respawn, it can be a real waste of your super. Radiance, when used correctly can be the most damaging super available. The key to radiance is that it will essentially multiply your strength and discipline by a large amount. So what I would highly recommend, is specking into as much discipline as possible. 271 is the max and that will get you to 100% discipline. Try to go for at least 60% intellect and a splash of strength will not hurt either. A high discipline sunsinger will find that they can throw 2-3x more grenades than a sunsinger with 0% discipline. If you are using Heart of the praxic fire you will be throwing 4-5x as many grenades. This means that with solar grenades you can create an incredibly large area of denial (great for the lamps in CE), with firebolt grenades it makes you incredibly effective for wiping out masses of enemies, and fusion grenades to deliver the most damage to a single target (great for bosses and raids). sunbreakers give you more intellect and make your solar grenades last twice as long giving you incredibly long area denial abilities, HOPF gives you a much stronger radiance increasing all cool downs by a further 25%. Paired with 90+% discipline this is the best exotic to go for. Claws give you two meles, and sunsingers have the best mele attacks, applying a damage over time burn and providing and over shield. If you use radiant skin you can reduce all incoming damage by 50%, with song of flame you can decrease your teams grenade cool downs by 90% when they are nearby. With void walkers, I find they are less versatile but a great offensive class. I will start off by saying this; using Obsidian mind with bad JuJu and bloom makes you an absolute monster. For the lamps in CE I have dropped a nova bomb at every single lamp, and the run in-between and produced literally hundreds of orbs for my team. The voidwalkers grenades are not as versatile as the sunsingers, but they are still great, & their super is not dependent on any other stats other than intellect, although you can spec so that your super charges faster when using your mele, so some strength is good, however intellect is the most important still. As for PVP there are more comprehensive breakdowns on this thread and I do not care to much for PVP so there are people with more experience that you are better off listening to than me.

  • Don't know if you still need it, but I've been playing a Warlock since the beta. Allow me to give you some tips and tricks and tell you what I run. As a preface, I'll be writing specifically about PvE encounters. If you want some PvP recommendations, I can do that too. Voidwalker - The grenades for Voidwalker are fairly solid, but I would stray away from Scatter grenade. It's definitely the weakest of the three. Vortex grenade is useful for providing Areas of Denial (areas where enemies (melee enemies, specifically) cannot enter due to a duration effect on an AoE) and is my personal favourite choice for PvE. I've heard decent things about Axion Bolt as well, but I haven't had much luck with it. Coupling Axion Bolt with the Bloom talent is recommended. - Stay away from Blink in PvE. It can get you into a lot of trouble or make you miss jumps. It's not necessarily bad, but it's a jump more suited for PvP. I tend to use Focused Burst to help me get away from things when I'm on low health, but that's just preference. - Nova Bomb is an excellent super for clearing huge amounts of enemies, especially when coupled with certain exotics and talents. The Vortex talent provides you with another Area of Denial effect, which is always useful. Shatter is interesting, and from what I've seen of it, it just covers a larger area (which, if you couple that with Bloom, could be excellent). I would say that, of the three, Lance is the weakest of the talents, as all it does is make Nova Bomb easier to aim. - Energy Drain is a very interesting melee, allowing you to charge your grenade quicker by using your melee (which does stack with other perks on armor like Serpent's Tail). The modifying talents are also interesting, and mostly come down to preference. Surge increases weapon and movement speed, which can be helpful in niche situations in PvE, but is probably better suited for PvP. Life Steal can be excellent when paired with Bloom, as it gives you back a chunk of health and clears enemies around you. Soul Rip will charge Nova Bomb quicker, and it's fairly substantial. I would say that, of the three, Surge is the weakest in PvE. - For the talents that modify your Armor, Recovery, and Agility, I use Arcane Spirit and Divine Order to give myself more Armor and Recovery. I value Agility less than both of these stats in PvE, as you're generally not going to be utilizing it to it's full extent. - This middle tier talents is strange. Annihilate increases the explosion size of grenades and Nova Bomb, which has good synergy with Bloom. Angry Magic is fairly useless in my opinion, as compared to both of the others talents, it lacks appeal. The Hunger will increase the duration of Energy Drain, which means your grenade will charge even quicker. Coupling The Hunger with Embrace the Void and Skull of Dire Ahamkara will ensure that your grenade is almost always available. - The last tier of talents. Vortex Mastery is good, and provides more potential for Area of Denial effects, and should be coupled with Vortex for Nova Bomb, Vortex grenade, and Annihilate. Bloom is probably the best PvE perk available to Voidwalkers, and will cause enemies killed by any of your abilities to explode (think: Firefly). Bloom is the most invaluable tool a Voidwalker has, as the subclass is heavily orientated to dealing with crowds. Embrace the Void is okay, but I find it works best in PvP. Exotics: - Apotheosis Veil: an exotic that will mostly only see utility during Crota on hard mode. I don't recommend this exotic. It's okay, but there's much better. It does have a purely Discipline roll, though, which is always nice. - Light Beyond Nemesis: stay away from this helmet in PvE. It's only use is for PvP game modes where revives are enabled. Strength roll is garbage. - Skull of Dire Ahamkara: an interesting exotic that has far more useful application in PvP than PvE, but is still decent overall, ensuring that your grenade will always be up if you spec into Embrace the Void and the Hunger. I wouldn't recommend this, but it's not terrible. Considering this has Intellect as a stat, I would recommend this helmet above Apotheosis Veil. - Obsidian Mind: the Voidwalker PvE exotic, each kill with Nova Bomb will reduce the cooldown of your next Nova Bomb. Use this one if you have it, it is arguably the best exotic in the game for PvE. - Voidfang Vestments: you'll only really see these shine in PvP, where the extra Axion Bolt tracker and grenade cooldown reset on spawn will be more noticeable. For PvE, I wouldn't recommend these at all, especially considering they have a purely Strength stat roll. - Claws of Ahamkara: subclass neutral, this will provide another charge to your Energy Drain, which certainly isn't bad. This exotic sees a lot more utility with Sunsinger's in PvP, though. A decent first exotic, but there's better options. Sunsinger - The grenades for Sunsinger are just as good as the ones for Voidwalker. Again, Solar Grenades provide a great Area of Denial (especially with Gift of the Sun and Sunbreakers). Fusion Grenades are very good as well, and have an extremely high single-target damage potential when used with Radiance. I would stay away from the Firebolt grenades, as they fall under the same category as Axion Bolt; better in PvP than PvE. - The jump comes down to two choices: Focused Burst or Balanced Glide. I use the Balanced Glide now for a good midway between speed and control. - Radiance. The super often called a "crutch" due to the Fireborn talent, its potential for Orb generation and team support is often overlooked due to the widespread use of Fireborn. Song of Flame essentially provides your team with Radiance with lesser effects, allowing them to melee and throw grenades more often, but not quite as often as you. If more people took advantage of this perk during Strikes and Raids, it would be great, but I often find that when I use it, my team doesn't know what it is or don't take advantage of it. Radiant Skin is what I'd recommend most in this tree, providing a substantial decrease to incoming damage. And then we come to Fireborn. Fireborn is great for Nightfalls and some parts of raids (like Vault of Glass' conflux defense), but it shouldn't be relied upon. I find far too many Sunsingers in Raids using Fireborn and holding on to Radiance until they die. Don't do that. Use Radiance to prevent yourself from dying. Take advantage of the grenade spam to save yourself and your team. Generate Orbs. Be supportive. - Scorch, at a glance, is a fairly lackluster melee, simply igniting enemies on hit. This changes with the talents. Brimstone is okay, but it's essentially a watered down Bloom that's only on your melee. Solar Wind is one of the worst talents Warlocks have at their disposal, stay away from it. Flame Shield. Use Flame Shield. It will save your life. - For the Armor, Recovery, and Agility modifiers, I do the same as I do with Voidwalker and max out my Recovery and Armor (Arcane Spirit and Divine Order). - For the middle tier of perks, I can really only recommend Radiant Will. Coupling Radiant Will with Heart of the Praxic Fire and Radiant Skin with Fusion Grenades can result in insane single-target damage. Viking Funeral will see more utility in PvP with Touch of Flame, but for PvE I would stay away from this. Sunburst is okay, but I tend to stay away from talents that only have a chance to happen, as they're unreliable. I believe it will generate two Orbs on proc, but I can't tell you how often it procs. When I used it, it happened about 3/4 times. - The final tier of perks is weird. Touch of Flame is better suited for PvP where it will shine more. Angel of Light is a fairly useless talent overall, and I can't recommend ever using it in PvE. Gift of the Sun is invaluable, providing you with a second grenade which is fantastic. Exotics: - Apotheosis Veil: same as with Voidwalkers, this still only sees utility in the Crota fight. It does, however, have a purely Discipline stat roll, and your Discipline stat does affect how quickly your grenades cool down during Radiance. I would use this helmet out of all the other exotics for Sunsinger. - Light Beyond Nemesis: unless you're doing PvP with revives enabled, don't use this. - Heart of the Praxic Fire: the Sunsinger exotic. Pure Discipline stat roll. Cooldowns reduced further during Radiance. With max Discipline, you can essentially throw continuous grenades, providing excellent Area of Denial potential or high single-target damage. - Voidfang Vestment: this has quirky utility in PvP, as the "spawn with grenade energy" will affect Sunsingers with Gift of the Sun, providing two grenades on each spawn. I wouldn't use this in PvE, though. - Starfire Protocol: provides you with a second Fusion grenade (note: this does not stack with Gift of the Sun, and your grenade stock will max out at 2). It's certainly not bad, and it does have a pure Intellect stat roll which is nice, but Heart of the Praxic is what you really want. - Claws of Ahamkara: 2 charges for Flame Shield. This is invaluable for PvP, where Scorch becomes a one-hit kill during Radiance. For PvE, this is okay (Discipline/Strength roll is decent), but there are better options. - Sunbreakers: increase the duration of Solar Grenade. If you use Solar Grenade, I can recommend these for places like the Abyss in Crota's End, where you can provide insane Area of Denial. An Intellect stat roll is nice, too. Until you get Heart of the Praxic, I would suggest using these.

      • Obsidian Mind works great with Bad Juju. Claws of Ahamkara work great in Pvp. Voidfang vestments are also a decent option. Skull of Dire Ahamkara doesn't work at all. I get killed while nova bombing all the time. If your doing a normal raid radiant skin is better than self res same goes for flawless raider.

        • These are my PvE builds a PvP build is up to you to figure out since it solely depends on what you play with and what you like to play with. My favorite build in the game as of late for the Voidwalker has been using Obsidian Mind with the following major perks (other perks are personal preference):
]Shatter- Splits Nova Bomb into three projectiles. Annihilate- increases blast radius of Nova Bomb. Soul Rip- Killing an enemy with Energy Drain (melee) restores a decent chunk of your super. Bloom- Killing an enemy with any void ability cause them to drift a bit and explode and damage enemies. This entire build is focused on dealing as much damage over a larger area so you you can get your super back very quickly.
But my preferred subclass is the Sunsinger. I use the Heart of the Praxic Fire and using the following major perks:
Fusion Grenade- Grenade that sticks to deal massive damage. Flame Shield- Honestly, not quite sure why you wouldn't run this perk. It gives you an overshield when you simply hit an enemy with Scorch (melee) Radiant Skin- Increases the amount of damage you get take whilst Radiance is active. Paired with Flame Shield, you are unlikely going to die. Radiant Will- Extends the duration of Radiance letting you be a flame-throwing tank longer. This build, as I've said above already, is made with MASSIVE DPS in mind but still making you quite difficult to kill off.
My current build (PVP) is great if you have Skull of Dire Ahamkara, only other build I'd consider is high Intellect and Strength with Voidfang Vestments and Vortex Mastery using Axion Bolt obviously

        • I find myself adjusting my setup a lot more these days with the Crota raid. Eg. Recovery is a bit pointless in Crota HM, so spec for agility and toughness instead. Before that I had it set to max toughness and max recovery and rarely touched it. The rest of the PvE game doesn't dictate a need to shift the stats around, so go with what works for you. I was always going down compared to my teammates when we were building our first characters, thus the 'tank' build. I suggest experimenting with the different supers and grenades. The grenades especially have their different uses. Vortex and Solar are good for area denial for example. Fire and Axion bolt are good for mobs. Fusion grenades are great for blasting witches and Swordbearers. Some grenade types will also get them to sit still so you can line up headshots or get some breathing room to reload or recover. I think a lot of the rest is about what exotics you have and how you fit with your team mates. Praxic Fire, obviously Sunsinger. Only got Sunbreakers? Use Solar grenades. Starfire Protocol - may as well use Viking Funeral and the other one to make enemies burn. Supers - well all the Voidwalker ones go boom. Just depends whether you want it to stick around. Standing in your own Nova Bomb is both funny and practical in the Abyss, and can help discourage a Praetorian from wandering onto a plate (though you're probably better off just hitting him with it). Don't forget about the other options on the Sunsinger. Self-res is less practical on Crota with the Oversoul, so better to go with Radiant Skin and not go down in the first place. Very rarely I have played with groups that used Song of Flame effectively. Back when the Templar could be pushed off is one poor example. A better one on Super use in general would be in the Abyss. A group that constantly fires off their Supers and soaks up each other's orbs is gonna have a hella fun time in there! Warlocks are pretty versatile. There aren't many levels that push you towards one subclass or another unlike Titans and Hunters. You're probably just as effective in the Abyss as a Sunsinger with firebolt grenades (Wearing the Heart of Praxic Fire for preference) as you would be running Voidwalker with Obsidian Mind. As a Sunsinger with Song of Flame you could be recharging that last part of your team's Supers AND creating orbs for them. As a Voidwalker, I've blasted a mass of Thrall chasing me and fully recharged my Super in one hit before thanks to the Obsidian Mind (plus pumped out orbs for others). With a team throwing Supers all around on the plate at the end of the Abyss, I've had at least 2 Nova Bombs churning away at the same time! It was awesome fun, we had a couple bubbles going and I would have tried for 3 Nova Bombs but there wasn't much left to hit at that point =) Hope that helps, I didn't read down to see if this was all new info. Best of luck Guardian!

For sunsinger you want exotic chest armorheart of praxic fire, voidwalker is also really fun with bad juju and/or obsidian mind. Most people agree the sunsingers fusion grenades is the most powerful but i have always foumd solar flare better for my play style as enemies will raraly walk into it.

              • PvE voidwalker I go with Obsidian Mind, scatter grenade and bloom are the main important ones. I love all the explosions, because if it's in the right situation, your grenade can work just as well as your nova bomb. Also, I run life steal for energy drain and also I switch between lance and the AOE perk depending on the situation.

Sunsinger: Heart of Praxic Fire is must have once you reach light levels. Use self revive for hard mode raids. Everything else is preference. Void: Bad juju with Obsidian (thanks lil tug) Mind. This enables just about constant nova bombs. This is of course all end game. As for where you are now, it doesnt really matter as the whole story is pretty much preparation for the "end game" which is light levels and raids. Unlock as much as you can of the class youll use most. Example; if you die alot level the sunsinger as it'll give you a do over so to speak. Play to your strengths and know your limits. Good luck guardian.

                      • Pve voidwalker I run max agility and recovery, then axion bolt, bloom, shatter (nova bomb), and annihilate. My melee switches depending on situation. As for jump I run blink but I'm just comfy with it. Pve sunsinger I run max recovery and armor typically unless I'm running sword. Then grenades I switch between fusion and solar depending on the situation. If I'm running a raid or nightfall I'll use self res (just for insurance) if not then hotpf and radiant skin plus extended radiance. When using self res I use the perk that has a chance to drop orbs from melee kills cause scorch and flame shield are just gorgeous in close calls. Then for the last column I use the extra grenade cause while radiance is active (or inactive) you can drop a grenade and not have to worry about wasting time due to animation delay while another grenade is on the way.

                            • For voidwalker, try every perk that steals super energy (eg. Soul Rip), get yourself Bad Juju and Obsidian Mind, and paint the town purple. I've been playing with a sunsinger build around Monte Carlo and the Ahamkara gauntlets - smack mobs around and burn 'em, constant flame shields, constant trickle of orbs.
