Faction
How do I know which faction if any I am aligned too I have no idea any help would be grateful

You however can 'rep' a faction by equipping their class item (cloak, mark, or bond) which will apply all rep you receive from activities (vanguard AND crucible) towards that faction. Leveling up your reputation unlocks powerful legendary gear that can be bought with crucible marks. EDIT: If you're looking for what your reputation with a current faction is, navigate to your inventory and select the drop down menu to the right of your mark totals. It's a new feature that shows all your rep across the whole game! Good lucK!

if you are level 20 you can go too the faction you want and buy the bond cloak or sign you want, but look first what they sell before you start ranking up the faction because they sell all different stuff

You never get aligned to a particular faction, rather you rank them up and are enabled to purchase things from their respective stores. As a general piece of advise, never starting leveling up a faction until you get Vanguard Rank 2. If you don't you're going to have lots of useless vanguard marks (Rank 2 is required to purchase armor, Rank 3 required to buy weapons).

And you can swap faction items or not have one equipped and not be aligned to any if you don't want too. When you do not have a faction item equipped thats when all your marks are Vangaurd marks. Edit: I do t know if faction "item" is the right terminology, but hopefully you get what I'm sayin

You're currently level 19 so you can't buy a faction class item to earn rep for any of the factions.
