Origin: Chapter 6, Part 2

Velox walked forward and placed a hand on its surface. It was smooth but felt almost soft to the touch, like it wasn’t a shield but rather a physical material. She backed up and took aim with her rifle. A crack echoed through the mountains and the tracer of the round glanced off the shield and shot into the cloudless night sky. “Well I had to try it.” She said. “We need to find the power source or a way into this thing. The signal is coming from somewhere inside.” Nymph said. “Well get scanning then. I don’t want to walk the whole perimeter of this thing looking for a back door.” Azrix said taking a seat on a rock on the side of the road. Nymph expanded as well as Gaia. Velox went over to Azrix. “Have you ever seen anything like this?” “Nope, and I doubt anyone else has or Nymph would have told us what it was.” “What if we can’t find a way into it?” “Oh I have a feeling come hell or high water we will get into this thing.” “What about those buildings? I have never seen any constructed like the one in the back.” “Looks like some kind of bunker. Maybe there is a war mind in there. If so, we need to make sure the Vex don’t get a hold of it.” Nymph and Gaia floated over to the two guardians. They looked at each other first and then back to the guardians. Nymph spoke first. “There is now way around it.” “There are no power sources on the outside that we can access.” Gaia said. “But there might be a way to make a hole.” Nymph said. “This is a shield but it is made of a physical material that can be destroyed by other physical items.” Gaia said. “So a rocket would do the job?” Azrix asked. “Maybe if you fired ten thousand at it all at once.” Nymph retorted. “Sorry I forgot to bring that many synths. What do we use?” Azrix asked. “On the mountainside over there,” Nymph said looking over to the left across a huge canyon. “There is an old MAC gun.” “A MAC gun?” Velox asked. “Magnetic Accelerated Cannon. It was a golden age weapon that was designed for planetary defense. It uses magnets and electricity to project a round to hypersonic speeds. It’s capable of taking out a flag ship in one shot.” “How big is a flag ship?” She asked. “Roughly one thousand two hundred meters in length and weighing four hundred and fifty thousand tons. Almost six thousand crew would be onboard.” Nymph answered. “That should do the job.” Gaia said. “Did you check on its battery level?” Azrix asked. “We did. It has a sixty five percent charge. Enough for at least two shots. “Well I suppose that we aren’t getting any closer to that signal just sitting here. Alright how do we get to it?” Azrix asked peering over the edge of the cliff. “Easy. We take the gondola.” Nymph said looking back down the path to a set of old rusted gondolas. “You know i hate heights……” Azrix grumbled. “Don’t worry. I believe the cables are still in good working condition and believe it or not, the power is still on.” The two walked to the gondolas their ghosts flitting about. The air was cold. Velox’s cape fluttered in the wind and snow started to fall. Soon their visibility was nearly as bad as it was the first day she had gotten to Mars. “If we shoot that shield with the MAC gun, isn’t there a possibility that we might destroy the buildings inside and therefore the potential war mind?” “Yes there is a possibility but right now, our main goal is to get what information we have about these Vex back to the vanguard. If we have to destroy a war mind to do it, then so be it.” Once at the small shack housing the gondolas, their the two ghosts started scanning the old computer terminals and the lights flickered on. The gondolas looked like a death trap. Some parts were so rusted you could see right through. “Mind your step. Wouldn’t want you falling through now.” Said Nymph. “When we make it out of this, I’m going to paint you pink with a couple flowers to boot.” Azrix mumbled. “Alright we are ready to go. Now just for safety considerations, im going to have the other gondola follow us across just in case these things aren’t exactly up to safety standards. The trip across shouldn’t take more than a minute. Once we get there turn north and the MAC gun should be five hundred meters away.” The ancient machinations started turning and the gondola crept forward slowly making an ear splitting screeching noise the whole way. Is subsided as they began picking up speed. Outside was a blur of black with the snow being highlighted by the gondolas lights. They couldn’t see anything more than a hundred meters away. Suddenly the gondola slowed and the screeching sound came back. Smoke began pouring into the small cabin. “Nymph! What the hell is wrong?” “It appears that the motor for this gondola has burnt out. Not a problem. We just simply need to get to the other gondola and finish the trip.” “You make that sound so easy.” Azrix said peering out of the frosted window. “The other gondola is almost twenty meters away!” “You can make it. I have seen you clear a twenty five meter gap easily.” “That’s on the ground or close to it. Not several hundred feet in the air.” “It’s actually over one thousand ninety seven fee.....” “Don’t wanna hear it!” Suddenly a dark cloud began filling the room and a sphere of void energy flickered into existence. “Alright the other gondola it is!” Azrix shouted as he sprinted to the sliding door and opened it.” Hope you guys enjoyed chapter 6!
