Oryx, the Hive, and the Darkness

I am not a Bungie employee, merely a fan who is interested in the lore. I strongly believe that Oryx is both Darkness and Hive, but in a different way than Crota. Crota was a creation of Oryx the same way the Hive were a creation of the Five Hive Gods (Oryx, Eir, Ur, Xol, and Yul). While he and his siblings (three of which I believe can be seen here) were made with Darkness, they are Hive. Oryx is not just a Hive. Oryx is what I call a "true" Hive. He is the original and all other Hive are made in his form, to an extent (as seen above). Oryx is a member of the Darkness and the Hive are based off him, giving reason to why they have a similar appearance to him yet he still having very unique traits (such as wings and the ability to control living creatures). Now, something that's interesting about this is that there are still four other Hive "gods" to consider. Does that mean there are different variants of Hive that are created by each of the Five? Oryx's direct Hive disciples are the Blood of Oryx, but I'd argue that all the Hive we've seen are of his design. It may even be possible that the other four have different species entirely, or something much different in nature. Perhaps Oryx commands the armies while the others do other things. The thing this begs an answer to most is if the Hive gods are truly the Darkness or just another rung on the ladder below the top. Oryx's dreadnought is not the same as the Onyx Pyramids of old, unless the look has changed. No, I think Oryx and the other four might just be a branch of the Darkness that controls the Hive and Taken. The Darkness is coming, and Oryx is just the beginning. Thoughts? Edit: This is an old thread. I'll probably make an updated one that focuses on new information some time soon.

  • Aren't we the darkness? the traveler was once with the hive, but later abandoned the hive, then when it can stop us it got crippled and created guardians. But doesn't that mean it being crippled is what holds it here as well?

    • Are the worms you see crawling in the dirt on the Dreadnought the same worms that made Oryx evil?

      • I read the Books of Sorrow, and I have questions for clarification due to recent arguments. In these books they mention separating their deaths, so that when killed they can resurrect. Oryx and his sisters all have this. When Oryx kills his sisters to gain power over his worm, and it says true deaths in the sword world, which world is this exactly? It mentions later that at least 1 sister resides in her throne world, so did he simply kill her physical being? Because she was resurrected later by Oryx when he spoke her name through war. Finally, if an ascendant Hive has their death in a separate world, but they're killed in that world are they dead for good? If not, then Oryx couldn't possibly be dead forever, and then raises the question of are the Hive unbeatable? I really need Bungie on this one, but anyone in the fan base willing to help would be much appreciated too!

        • Oryx was curropted by the darkness aka the worms. He eat one of them and became what he is today. he fed the worms to his people to make them stronger. The other hive gods are the other worms like the one oryx ate. the hive and the darkness are one and the same currently.

        • I would believe oryx is a channel for the darkness. If we assume the darkness is a conscious mass. It's obviously very smart. What if it's tricking oryx. Oryx believes he's in control, using the abilities the darkness gave him, but it's really the darkness that's using oryx's body. Since the darkness can't manifest it's self in a visible form.

          • I would actually assume the opposite standing in the hive Pantheon. You don't usually send out your King from the start. You might send out you're mightiest warrior, but not the King (at least not the first major offensive). I think Oryx would be more akin to Ares. A god of war. I also think his main motivator is that his son was killed in a system that they thought was already theirs.

            • There's concept art of worm based enemies as well, maybe they fall under one of those gods...if so then this game just gained another level of longevity for me.

              • I'd like to think that this is true but then they have to create different enemy types for all the different Hive and I don't think Bungie is willing to do that. They're recycling enemies as the Taken. I don't think they're going to come up with four other different species of just Hives. Awesome theory though.

                  • To my knowledge though reading some of the lore. I could be way off. But Oryx isn't the top tier of the pantheon of the hive Gods. He isn't equal to them. He's the bottom. He's the lowest tier. I believe he has stepped into the foreground not because he's the leader, or the most powerful, but simply because something (us) killed his son and he wants to kill us, possibly to show himself to the more powerful gods?

                    • Hmm, interesting, I always assumed that Oryx was the Zeus of the pantheon of hive gods, I always applied a human filter to the hive gods, imagining that their structure followed something like that of Greco-roman or Viking culture. However what you're saying gives me interesting ideas, if Oryx is an equal entity to the other hive gods, and these gods are distinctly different, it could be quite possible that Oryx (and the other 4) created each of their races in their own image. This could mean that there are other, completely separate and equally dangerous hive armies out there. Also if Oryx and bros were created by the darkness itself, does the darkness have a physical manifestation that serves as God of gods over the vex/hive? It would be interesting to have a location where both hive and vex are present. Would they fight each other? Also if the darkness spawned both the hive and vex, why are they so different? Also (grab your tinfoil hats) unless I'm confused, the vex were originally organic but turned into machines to avoid something. What if the hive were a race not unlike humans until the darkness created the 5 hive gods these gods were intended as a means of controlling and transforming the hive into the darknesses weapon. However some hive attempted to escape the reaches of the darkness by becoming the vex and escaping from time. However the darkness was able to take control of them in a manner similar the primordial's logic plague on mendicant bias in halo's lore. So the darkness was then in control of two distinct armies/forces, that would explain why the vex and hive are deployed in separate locations, the darkness was attempting to use different forces in ways that befit them best, and the darkness doesn't want them to get in each other's way. So in this way the vex are the tool of the darkness whilst the hive are the tool of the darknesses creations.

                    • If The Darkness is the opposite of Light, then it isn't a physical thing. On a scale of most dark to most light: Hive Vex Cabal Eliksni Guardians This is obvious even in the way they look. The Hive are absolutely terrifying in every aspect. They lay eggs, burrow under planets, hide in the shadows then rip their targets limb from light. Vex are pretty scary too; they want to be integrated into the laws of physics. They are less dark than hive because they don't want to eradicate Light, just control EVERYTHING. They also were not born into the darkness, they merely adopted it. Cabal have nasty faces and blow large things up. Sounds pretty evil, but it also sounds like any basic antagonist. They fear the Darkness and want to conquer everything else. The Eliksni experienced The Traveler. They want the Light, they are just misguided in their attempts at getting it, which makes them evil, but not dark. Guardians obviously are fighting for the traveler. Not much needs said about us. Looking at it from this perspective means that motives seem to be a good measure of Darkness. Oryx wants revenge for his son's death. Now, thinking back to the other races. Everyone is terrified of The Darkness, except vex and hive. Vex have already submitted to it, so that leaves the hive. The hive are truly the children of the darkness. Our traveler is sick, and the hive are pestilent. Oryx WIELDS the darkness and uses it to create his Taken Army. Now, the question is, did Oryx create (for lack of better term) The Darkness, or did The Darkness lend it's evil to him? I believe The Darkness LENT it's power to the Hive god/kings for one simple reason: their is more than one ruler. I know you can argue and say that there are multiple gods in many religions and mythologies, but they all share one thing—the ruler of the gods (zeus, ra, etc...). Because we cannot discern a highest-up of the highest-ups, I am going to say it is a hierarchy rather than a religious council. This being said, we have 5 Hive kings. Now, when choosing leaders, you don't just give a few people ultimate power. A leader rules his/her entire nation, and does not share his/her power. The only explanation as to why there are multiple kings is that the Hive disagree on SOMETHING. I believe this something relates directly to The Darkness. Maybe it's a disagreement on origin? Beliefs? True ownership of The Darkness? This is the question I'm asking: Why don't they agree? How will we know how to fight our enemy, if they don't even understand their own power?

excellent write-up :) it would seem that oryx and his kin are all servents to the darkness the hive that we have been fighting are just oryx's brood ( he also has a queen , right ? ) his brothers are gonna be PISSED when we smoke his sorry ass !!! in the prologue video it looked like the taken are a result of oryx transferring crotas spirit energy into living beings ?
