So Bungies going to ban alot of innocent people? (3 bungie comments)

The new update had some nice things to say: free map, free stuff on 7/7, and cheaper maps.... But then there was a section of bad news that some of you might have noticed: and it struck more than a few questions across my mind. -how does bungie plan on banning all the people with modded maps, and modded pictures on their fileshares? -how will they implement this new update so every last person with a modded item knows of this update? -and does this update count towards the 100 downloadable files on your harddrive you are allowed? I believe that this update is unreasonable, and heres why it would be illogical: most people who have modded maps on their fileshares are not going to read the front page update. honestly, its a strange thing to ban people who have downloaded these maps. Its more sensible to ban the creators. second, this seems like a very extreme action to take, because modding has yet to hit halo 3's matchmaking. I know its all cautionary, but the thought of being banned from playing halo online over the fact your friend gave you a modded map with extra elephants seems excessive. What is everyones thoughts?
Posted by: Niko Jims . . . If they did ban you and you had never had any modded content on it, legal action could be taken. And if you did you could just delete every map off your harddrive and say you never had any. They would have no proof and I am sure you would win. And I doubt Bungie wants to waste their time on something that they have less than 25% chance of winning . . .
You'd have absolutely no chance of winning that case. Your Terms of Use say that your XBox Live service can be terminated in full or in part at any time with or without warning. They don't even have to give you a reason.

 • Modding is not cheating. They mod maps and gametypes, not Matchmaking. Just take every modded map off your fileshare and you are clear. I really don't think they can ban you for having it on your harddrive because 1.They have no evidence of this and 2.You could put it on a memory card. If they did ban you and you had never had any modded content on it, legal action could be taken. And if you did you could just delete every map off your harddrive and say you never had any. They would have no proof and I am sure you would win. And I doubt Bungie wants to waste their time on something that they have less than 25% chance of winning. The only modding that was cheating was in Halo 2. The modders do not have the equipment to mod Halo 3 Matchmaking.

 • Bungie is going to create an entire generation of video gamers that think mods are a bad thing. Don't believe me? Look at how they have corrupted a lot of these younger gamers minds into believing that paying for maps is perfectly ok.

 • How exactly do these people mod content on an xbox 360? I'm guessing something similar to the old xbox action replay memory card/ linking their hard drive up to a pc or something of that nature? I agree though modders should get what they deserve. Why can't they just appreciate the game the way Bungie intended it to be? Amen to Shishka's post. That guy and all others who admit to having modded content on this thread should be sterillised to prevent more retards from being born into the world.
Posted by: error msg okay... okay... so you have modded content, how does this make you guilty, I mean sure you did something that you shouldn't but honestly, what are you guilty of being curious? guilty of wanting to have fun? I see no similarities between those with the content and those who make it. Even if the do "do something wrong" I don't think it makes them bad people worthy of the same punishment as the modders. I dare anybody else to give me any answer otherwise without giving the same old "its bad because they say its bad" excuse.
You've agreed to the Terms of Use for your Live account, which forbids modding content. You shouldn't agree to contracts like that unless you've read and understand them. If you read it and don't understand it, then you choose "Decline," go look up whatever it was you didn't understand, then, if you agree to it, go back again and choose "Accept." If you don't agree to it, you don't bother using the software. It's not so much, "it's bad because they said it's bad," as it is, "it's bad because you agreed it's bad." The fact that you're posting here means you already agreed that it was bad.

 •
Bungie is being more strict on this topic due to the fact that certian pictures of woman have been floating around users fileshares and as you all know children 18 and under play the game and will see the content...and we don't want bungie to get sued for something a 53 year old man in his mother's basement uploaded to his fileshare.
It's comments like these that I must laugh at. Nothing personal, man, but I do find it amusing that us Americans are more concerned with keeping our children away from nude women than we are about exposing them to the horrors of war depicted in most FPS games today =P As for my thoughts on the modding subject, I think it's alright just as long as the modding doesn't evolve from unofficial maps/gametypes to something that can be exploited to cheat online.

 •
Posted by: groggingrunt
Posted by: empyphil Good to see Bungie crushing all who cheat. On Myth 2 the cheating was horrible :P
these comments are always enfuriating to read because modding has, thus far, done nothing to harm the halo 3 player. I can sympethize with those who are afraid with the possibility of it invading matchmaking, but its sad to see modding for custom gaming being attacked so vigorously.
Did u ever consider the possibility that they are getting banned not because the modding is hurting people, but because modding is againt the rules and also the law.

 • I believe in open sourceness, but save it for the computer. If bungie would just make an H3 Custom edition then people could get all of their modding urges away. It could be similar to the elder scrolls CS. Having maps on your file share should give reason to ban, HOLY CRAP THEY HAVE 6 ELEPHANTS THE MAP WILL ASPLODE101001010101, if you don't want modded maps on halo 3 for a console make one for the computer. The picture thing I completely agree with though.

 •
Posted by: KillshocK Ironically BioShock is a copy of the game System Shock on the PC. But, since nobody has noticed, its not a problem,
Bioshock was made by the same people as system shock.
According to the developers, BioShock is a spiritual successor to the System Shock games, and was produced by former developers of that series. Levine claims his team had been thinking about making another game in the same vein since they produced System Shock 2.
•
Posted by: KTowN IZ BacK its also a M-Rated game. so if mommy got mad at what little johnny was looking at she shouldnt have bought her underage son a m-rated game. every person 17+ is perfectly ok with -blam!- content. the argument of a lawsuit is lost in the argument of good parenting. its that simple. i think the should focus more on the people who have been manipulating ips lately. not a pic of a walrus and a bucket. cmon guys. arent we all adults here
I'm sure many parents won't have a problem with a kid playing an M-rated game. Would they buy -blam!- for them? I doubt it. When a parent buys their kid Halo, they ain't signing up for Playboy too.

 •
Posted by: Recon Number 54
Posted by: Nox Vulpes You guys need to get to work on actual problems. I can think of a hundred things more urgent than lolcats pictures circulating through your file sharing program. Seriously, what about IP flooding? What about network inconsistency? What about all the ACTUAL problems in your game? Is banning a guy for having a pic of a walrus with a bucket in his fileshare more important to you than banning a guy who IP floods matchmaking games?
Is protecting themselves from a lawsuit important? Because this will, and likely has happened. "Junior, what in the HELL are you looking at?" "Nothing mom, some guy just sent it to me in Halo!" "How the hell did a video game get that sort of pictures in it?" "I don't know mom, it's not MY fault!" "Well then, I am calling my lawyer and finding out whose fault it is, these Halo people or these Xbox Live people, because THEY can't be allowed to send images like this into MY house over a videogame!" So, what is more important? Keeping XBL and Bungie from pulling the plug on the WHOLE thing to settle a multi-million dollar class action suit and a PR nightmare, or the fact that you sometimes encounter idiots who overload your router with pings and you don't/can't set your router to ignore that traffic? Actual problems? Oh yeah, this is one. If you can't see that, then you have blinders on. And as always, I am not a Bungie employee, I am not a Bungie spokesperson, I am a Bungie fan that is old enough to understand the real world pressures and considerations that big businesses have to deal with every day.
There ya go folks, let the big boys speak. Also-I don't see what people don't understand: you agreed to not mod content. That is black and white. Even casual gamers, such as myself, know the difference between something forged and something 1337 hax0red...Get rid of it, or Bungie gets rid of you.

 • I think they should implement a system where if they have those items in the file share, they will get a message from a xbox live account telling them they are suspended from using their file share for a day, and that further distribution of modded content will result in permanent ban. " That way the punishment isn't that harsh but people will get the notice. [Edited on 07.08.2008 7:54 PM PDT]
