The Battle for Old Philadelphia [Finale]

"...welcome back. Yeah, that was the first transmission we heard from them when they broke the surface. Think it was... Eh I don't know all their names. Pope? Deacon? Church? Bishop! Yeah. Bishop. It was Bishop. No clue what the hell he was talking about though. Was he like, welcoming us all back to Philadelphia or something? I'm an Exo. I don't really know where I was before my Ghost woke me up. But if it WAS Philadelphia, and it was anything like it was that day, I'd rather have not been welcomed. Always confuses me, the sort of quotes that wind up being history. 'One small step for man,' wasn't how he was supposed to say it. 'We're walking into a rising wind,' everybody know that one. Mars. First contact. Dude was just talking about the wind. 'Welcome back.' People are taking it like... 'welcome back to the rest of the world' for humanity, and all kinds of other shit. I was there though. Doesn't quite make sense in contact. Pretty sure he wasn't talking to us. Just a hunch though." ****************************************************************************************** "The Guardians are scattered. There aren't enough of us. We're not a unified fighting force---until we are. The Guardians must not seem like too big a threat to the other races in the system, when we only show up half a dozen at a time. Old Philly though? Hive invasion? We showed up. By the hundreds. Never seen that many Jump Ships at once. Never seen that many Tomb Ships either. Our ships popping in sounded like a constant background of popcorn---and the Tomb Ships cutting in was just this constant shriek. Almost drowned out all those damn Wizards and Shriekers. Almost. They call it the battle 'for' the city, but we basically leveled it. Rubble that was left, though? That was ours. This is our rock. Get the -blam!- off." ************************************************************************************************ "All out warfare through the streets. My team and I, we came in late. Just after Zavala extended his officially unofficial support of the operation. I hear Cayde had to twist his arm---whatever. We came in late, right about the time the second wave teams were clearing landing zones for everyone else. Coming in, the sun was going down. I honestly can't describe what it looked like from the sky. Kinda looked like the city was on fire. Fire in just about every color. Could see where we were pushing them back, though. The Hive like that pale green mist stuff. You could see this like, this hard line where the pale green stopped and the prismatic fire of whatever the hell we are began. Kinda pretty. Just, with the teams clearing landing zones, pushing forward... you could see these spots in the green, just expanding outward slowly. Looked like a disease. Can a disease be pretty? That's us." ****************************************************************************************** "So we're pushing down 4th. Ogres charging up the street, causing hell. I'm hunkered down with some other randoms---look I saw the bounty posting and just came, I usually work alone---trying to reload my rocket. This trio of Warlocks, New Monarchy colors and bonds, comes streaking in on Sparrows. They all jump off in unison to catch some air, float up still tearing toward them and... We call that move of theirs a Nova Bomb. This wasn't even---three of them, firing three each? Doing whatever it does to make anything that gets hit by it just tear itself apart, explodin' into more Void? Looked like a wave! Just this purple wave, washed over all the Thrall and Acolytes and Knights on the street, and when that exploding wave overtook the Ogres they were just... gone. Washed away. Holy SHIT that was cool." ********************************************************************************************** "It was loud, and I think I'll stick to salvaging things far away from war zones." ********************************************************************************************** "Orders from Zavala---not official orders, but anyone was welcome to collect on a nice looking bounty for lending a hand---were to cover their escape. Now, I'm not saying they didn't do something good there. I'm not, I'm not going there. I'm no hater. I'm just pointing out that the 'Battle of Philly' started as they were leaving. Yeah, I'm sure they -blam!-ed plenty up themselves. I heard they fought like, hundreds of Ogre down in the tunnels, blasted through the side of the Hive stronghold down there trying to flood it or collapse it, and that Ricochet dude just wanted to keep advancing down there all by himself. That's badass right? I'm just saying. We showed up to fight while they got out, so they could go make a report or whatever. Info they had did help us win there. And I mean, they caught a Hive invasion. I'm not up on the conspiracy theories. People asking why they were there in the first place. It was a Hive. Invasion. The -blam!- do you think they were there for?" **************************************************************************************************** "It was hard to transmit out, at first. Hive do that, somehow. The Philadelphia dark zone was just sort of rumor until then. Guess nobody wanted to believe they were on Earth. My question is, why not just send someone to confirm the dark zone? I hear this story about them going in, fighting that swarm of Wizards, all that. Couldn't they have just gotten to the edge of the dark zone and sent for help?" ***************************************************************************************************** "The Angel showed up. Saw'er myself. She winked at me. I mean after she came outta the sky like a damn comet and smashed up a bunch of buildings. Blew me a kiss, too. What, you don't believe me? You're jealous." **************************************************************************************************** "The New Monarchy has no official comment on the following: The presence of the mythical 'Angel' at the battle for Philadelphia. The presence of the team 'Trinity' at the battle for Philadelphia. Association with the awoken known as 'Fox'. Any prior knowledge to the existence of Golden Age research facilities in the area." ********************************************************************************************** "The Future War Cult would like to, proudly, collectively, say this: We told you so. Also, we do not officially back the actions of the team newly made official by council vote. The Vanguard Assault Lance is not under our command. They do, often use our weaponry. We note the Free Trade Accords still in effect in the City and Tower, and invoke our right not to specify on business dealings. Exchange of product is not an official statement of allegiance. Thank you." **************************************************************************************************** "Dead Orbit is not surprised. Dead Orbit knows that those beyond wish to plunder our knowledge, our ways. Their interest in Earth is beyond fascination. We must continue to build our fleet. We must learn from the mysteries beyond. Combined with ours, humanity's fate is ours to determine. Plundering the secrets we have left for ourselves is the key to divinity. Dead Orbit declares no official support or involvement in the battle for Philadelphia. The brave Guardians who fight to ensure rightful claim to our destiny know their purpose. Space is vast, but silent." ************************************************************************************************** "The Tower Council requests a greater understanding of recent events, and the... 'team' who seem to be a common denominator. Those Guardians involved seem particularly averse to cooperation. We have appealed to their Ghosts, and garnered the cooperation of only one. This Ghost. 'She' calls herself... Narrative Dissonance. I am certain this is some sort of joke, but I don't really get it. By her personality, she fits well among those we seek to question. Summon her to a hearing. Let her speak, and explain. Then we will decide what should be done. Perhaps a useful asset can be made of these... unconventionally destructive Guardians. Unconventional. Are we not weapons of the Light? I suppose there is no more conventional a tool, than a weapon which destroys things." ********************************************************************************************************** "Every ending is a beginning. The Speaker loves that phrase." _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Thanks to everyone who read along, gave encouragement and feedback! • I couldn't stop reading this. Lovely pacing and fleshed out so beautifully. I only wish bungie would make use of these writings in the Grimiore. The inclusion of short, but powerful, stories could really give some much needed backbone to the destiny universe.
