Honest Feedback on:Class items from the Speaker...and how to make class items meaningful

Pretty! But what do they DO? (Rhetorical question.) 25 motes of light for...a Legendary towel that provides no mechanical benefit to me whatsoever and won't take shader colors? Not even a faction rep flag to be set so I can at least make some progress in the game while I'm wearing it? Why is this even a thing? I don't expect a [redacted] and a pan of hot buttery biscuits, but for 25 motes these class items should provide some individual and unique benefits, even if it's just a token gesture. I'm a little puzzled as to why the class items are so blah in general. This could have been an awesome tool for character customization and playstyle expression, but instead it's just wildly over-priced cosmetic fluff, (or sadly repetitive drops from the Cryptarch) aside from the faction items. Why are we not given a full upgrade path of some kind on class items? Let us choose the special abilities we want them to grant, put the play-time in to get access to them, and make them look different depending on what we choose, let them change visually as we complete tasks and get kills. The mark on a PvE grinder should look radically different from the mark on a PvP superstar. My Titan mark could have been truly unique badge of honor, that told the history of my character and the way I play the game...instead it's basically an Amazing Technicolor Dishrag with a knife on it that I'm not even allowed to use. You should know what we've done in the game just by looking at our class items and decoding the details. Take all those buried grimoire stats and give them visual representations on our class items. How many Fallen Walker kills, zone rank, faction reps, strike completions, VoG runs, crucible medals...all of that should be visually represented on my mark (or cloak, or bond) if I inspect it. You already have all this data stored for each of us...put it to use folks, make us care about it. If you can't figure out how to represent all those data points visually, hire somebody with a degree in semiotics and get them to do it for you. (Or hire me, I'll take longer, but I'll get you there in time for the sequel :P ) Badges of rank, medals, years of service, campaign history...all these things are basic parts of a military dress uniform...take a page out of that playbook and make our class items MEAN something. If I inspect your bond, cloak, or mark, it should tell me exactly who you are, and what you've done in this universe. The Speaker should be selling bangles and patches to APPLY to your class item, and they should do something for you...not whole new items (or new skins for old items) that do nothing and cost the world.

  • One of my favourite customisation tools from early COD days was to be able to create weapon badges using a simple editor (I always made the captain America logo) It would be cool to be able to create our own shaders and class items with materials left over in our inventory, with a few new materials added, then we have to infuse/level them up like a quest line to add perks Make your own hunter cloak and logo, that would be awesome for teams and clans to make them really stand out from the crowd, even if that means taking away the light aspect. I'd love to see a team theme running around the tower, would t that make you want to join someone's clan! Someone with an awesome load out, shader and class item you've never seen before

  • I like the concept of some of your key stats being represented by your cosmetic class item - that is an idea that I think has a lot of neat potential. Maybe your three best stats or something that other players could see and get an idea of your skill, play style, or accomplishments.

I wonder if - now that we actually have this - you're glad you requested it. I also wonder if you're a stealth Bungle employee who posted the idea to drum up support for it before release. But even if you are, I still wonder if you're glad we have it now. I certainly am not. Now, I can no longer wear whatever class item I feel like wearing at the time without giving up Light or having the wrong perks equipped. I find myself wearing ugly class items because they have the best stats and perks, and I resent it. Plus, I have a whole new class of armor that I have to try to get good stats and perks on and a whole new class of armor to upgrade. And the worst part is that now that they've implemented it, there's no way to take it out without screwing over their players. Again. Further. I knew this was a bad idea the instant I read it. Foolishly, I assumed Bungle would also recognize that it was a bad idea. I won't make that mistake again.

  • I can't help but feel that the class items were supposed to be something like the Relics in Borderlands. Something to give you small boosts, like 5% extra XP, increased loot drop, 10% extra ammo capacity, +2 agility, etc The fact that there is nothing on them at all but all these snazzy names and tag lines makes me feel that there was something and it was then removed. I'd love to see a simple bonus depending on the item because, right now, the one I own just makes my arm look like it's on fire.

  • And then you could trade all the class items in to reset the stats for another class item representing what you did and work your way back up. And they could call this something cool like "prestieging" . . . Oh wait. . . Activision wins again. . .

  • I mean honestly for real. When you look at ole Xur over there selling exotic engrams for only 23 motes of light you can't help but say why on earth would I spend 25 on this cloth or band that doesn't do anything.

  • I agree, they should have at least an experience boost every time you finish a pvp or pve so you can get more motes of light. Like it should say +25% experience boost. Honestly for someone who ends the story of the game, he sells the most useless things you can buy.

    • Frankly, I want the class items to be open customization pieces. Have each class item have a slot to upgrade with additional ones depending on the grade of the item. Allow players to choose an upgrade from the entire list for each slot. Case in point, I like to run hand cannon. Ammo can be... tight... a lot of the time. Allow me to throw the perks on that allow ammo to return to my ammo pool for each kill. If I want to take multiple perks in that, fine. If I want to stack it with nothing but damage perks, fine. Allow players to play the way they want to.

      • My theory was that at some point class items would generate element shields like many of our enemies do (arc, void, sun)

          • Yes, some cosmetic things could be a number of morning stars on your arm for how many thousand fallen killed etc, every 5000 you get a morning star etc, maximum of 3 though! For so many miles covered in the game you get spikes on your boots, for so many VOG on hard mode clears you get different colour flames on your head permanently! For so many melee kills in pvp or pve you get samurai swords on your back! Things like this would be cool

            • I think that class items that are rare and above should provide minimal light, maybe an ammo boost, and if legendary then a boost to damage of a specific weapon type or help to resist an element

              • They should have simple boosts on them. Find ammo more easily Earn more upgrade mats while farming Supers regen 5% faster Supers last 5% longer Increased jump height 1 hit melee from behind against guardians Increase stability of weapon your using by 10% Increase range of weapon your using by 10% Things of that nature and only 1 perk per class item. And since your spending motes allow you to reroll which ability it gains with 5 more motes.

                  • I hear you. Honestly I'm not giving up on them yet. They might stand for something down the road, and who knows, your rep in the past might even count toward it. It wouldn't surprise me. I suspect we've only seen the tip of the iceberg for most things in Destiny. I just like 'em because they're so unique. You stand out in a crowd, you know?

                    • I think class items should give attribute buffs like +2 to agility or +5% to impact of all Primary weapons and so on and so forth. That would make them worth investing in. Right now I don't know why anyone would waste motes on a class item when they can get an exoctice engram instead.
