Bungie Not Providing Review Copies of Destiny to the Press

Bungie isn't giving out review copies of Destiny until the day before release? How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day? I'm pretty excited for this game, but shutting out the media like this adds to the suspicion that maybe this game isn't as large as we are expecting.

  • Well, aren't the servers offline untill day of release, so reviewers wouldn't be able to play the game anyway? or am I missing something? Normally I don't trust a game to be good if a dev decides to go about it this way, but I played the alpha and beta, so I have absolutely nothing against Bungie's decision. Destiny will be awesome regardless of this.

  • No early access to raids, just for being the cousin of a video game critic. Good on ya Bungie.

  • I don't think Destiny is that kind of game where you can get a copy and "beat" the game for a full fledged review, it's more like an "on-going progress" type of review so either way it'd be pointless unless all you want in a review is to know how large the size of the worlds are.

  • Bungie understands something about their game. It's going to be a "review-in-progress" type of game. You will see people dropping reviews that take them over a month or so to finish. It's how the game is built. Can you really expect people to give full reviews of a game that the servers aren't up and running on? Raids. PvP. strike missions. These are all crucial elements of the games identity, and they are meant to be experienced with others. Can't do that until the game is out.

  • I personally think that Bungie wants to hear more feedback from their actual fans, and less from the press. They care about us fans more. In my opinion, their decision is a smart technique...putting the press into the shoes (or socks) of a gamer damn close to the release. And also, the servers won't be open until that day. So there's another reason.

  • Discard any review out in 1-7 days. It's a model of play based on endgame content. If endgame content will suck the game will die even if it's good at first sight. If endgame content is good it will make this a great game even if it won't convince at first sight. It's nothing new for this model of games

    • Reviewing Destiny before the public release is like telling someone, who has never played World of Warcraft, to review it while they are the only person on the server. We've played the Alpha and the Beta. There's no reason to worry.

    • Yes because we actually care what they have to say a week or a few days before launch would it change your mind, after playing the beta, if some reviewer for bullshit magazine said the game was complete garbage? because i played the beta and i know im going to enjoy destiny regardless what some magazine jocky has to say about it. i dont care if other players think this and that is shit, IMO destiny wasnt made for them, im willing to accept what i get when it comes out and i already know its a game made for me and the majority of people on this forum who are excited for everything destiny has to offer.

    • Like any review for a video has desuaded people who have played a beta and have already pre-ordered.

      • If they gave the game out, who would they be able to play it with? Either way I don't really care, I had a shit ton of fun with the beta.

      • Never understood the purpose of game reviews, the person reviewing isn't you nor do they have the same likes dislikes or emotional attachment to certain scenarios that completely change one persons experience to another. I never listen to another persons opinion of a "game" especially.

        • With today's instant access to feedback from games via twitch and youtube. .. gaming "reviews" from a press standpoint seems archaic... it's always better to see the live feedback from like minded people as opposed to people with agendas. .. In the long run doing the research yourself is more rewarding than say a "gaming" magazine who may or may not have been handed favors

        • Thanks for the info. This is interesting. But honestly I wouldn't read the review (or anyone else's). I've already played the beta and I know what this game is and how beautiful it looks and plays. I will find out everything else on my own. After all, it is my Destiny.

Just read the article in the link, they have updated their story to include that reviewers will have their copies of the game by Friday, however, the servers for the game are offline until Monday morning. This goes a little ways towards blunting he wound, but fact of the matter is that we will still not likely see reviews until later next week. It's weird cause most outlets for Destiny got extremely early access to the Beta and Alpha versions of the game, I wonder what the reason behind this decision is?

        • This is hardly the first time a Dev has done this. Plenty of Devs don't give out review codes until the day before launch or simply the day of. For most Devs it's a sign that the game may not be ready for public consumption, but with the beta that we played I hardly think that possible. In my opinion, this is probably a PR move by Activision so that we don't have reveiws of the game until after launch and Destiny has been guaranteed pre order sales. It sounds dirty, and it IS by the way, but I have full faith in Bungie.

        • If you need a review to figure out if you like the game after everything Bungie has put out, you're doing it wrong. We've actually gotten to PLAY and pretty good amount of the game, I'll take my experience over some reviewer's that I don't know. I don't see how this is a big deal.

          • My guess would be they are doing this to protect endgame content from being released or other mysterious places like the reef I assume it's to keep up the whole "destiny is a place for you to discover" not a place for you to watch another person discover and then do it yourself

          • Maybe they're worried someone will leak videos. Like that one guy did who released Alpha gameplay before the alpha even came out.

          • Maybe it's because the game is really lacking in content.
