new article about raids & matchmaking

Hey gang sorry to beat the dead horse but just found a new article about Raids and the decision to NOT have matchmaking. I enjoyed it, I liked the thoughts of the author and I thought I'd post it. Not interested in beating the horse, starting a war, flame bait, or whatever else the trolls care about. Just thought it was a good read. It may open up a few folks brains about why Bungie went in that direction. Maybe a few people that are upset about it will give it a chance, read the article and then say "oh, I didn't think about it like that, well okay, I can see a different perspective", "maybe I'll wait and play the full game and then decide". But enjoy and see you all starside.

  • The thing with raids is that according to Bungie their difficulty will require a group of six skilled and determined players who have coordinated a strategy that they are willing to work at and implement for a large chunk of time (possibly 3-8 hrs). Matchmaking just won't be able to make that group happen. Having a team/raid mate drop out of a game is frustrating to every gamer, from casual to hardcore, and in this instance it would cause almost certain failure. The only way Bungie could hope to ensure this combination of players with the previous attributes came together is to have them put an equal amount of effort into forming a raid party as the individuals would be putting into completing the raids themselves. I don't think most players have issue with the proposed difficulty of the raids so adjusting that won't solve anything. Just my thoughts

    • It's no skin off my nose, I'll not be playing long enough to even think about raids. There's not enough in the game that makes me want to play for more than 10 weeks never mind 10 years as they're touting. This is based on beta gameplay however so I may be wrong, but the very limited communication has done nothing to win me over.

      • There is no viable reason for some of the decisions made by Bungie, least of all is the limitation of raids to friends only. The addition of team/group chat (another baffling omission), solves many issues that they feel would bar a MM group from success.

        • I love how Bungie is making Raids out to be this mega-difficult thing. It's just an FPS with no class roles. I bet it'll even be easier than Halo 3's legendary difficulty.

          • yes because I understand how playing halo 3 on easy with my little sister so she could have fun taking out a scarab really hurt the hardcore community and ruined their legendary and LASO playthroughs I can understand hardcores being accommodated with their own difficulty with its own rewards just for them like vidmasters with reckon and I would support that but they need their own content just for them? or what they will feel insulted and refuse to play destiny ever again if filthy non-hardcores get to easily play the same content even if its just normal mode? and god forbid if a matchmade team ever did complete a raid EVE online isn't this elitist and doesn't try to find ways to keep people from easily accessing its content and it actual does require team work forging real alliances it actually has betrayals in the game the greatest battles can come out of no where with someone accidentally warping their titan into the wrong system EVE has more than earned the right to want to ensure only commited players play but how does it do that? through GAMEPLAY alone and what if a new player wants to go to hardest part of the game? (00 space) does EVE stop them? nope EVE's perfectly happy to let you walk into your own death and lets you decide if you think its a good idea to go there again at you level/skill/group size

            • Great article and I totally agree with the author. It just amazes me that some people just can't grasp the concept that getting 6 people together is SUPPOSED to be difficult. That's the whole point. Bungie doesn't want everyone to be able to easily access the raid. They've come right out and said it. By not including MM, they aren't excluding anyone. I surely won't have 5 friends that I can call on to raid, but I'm not worried about it. I'll join a clan, get a plan together, and raid with those guys/gals every now and again. I see this as a challenge, not a punishment. This isn't anything new. Just a few years ago, raid match making didn't exist in WoW. You had to get the word out ahead if time that there was going to be a raid on a certain day at a certain time. It was difficult to get 40 people together for the first raids. They didn't add it out of the kindness of their hearts so that everyone without a big enough guild could access them. They added it because they were losing subscribers. They thought that opening up raids to everyone would keep people interested. Now it's become a crutch. Bungie doesn't care about that. They WANT you to have to do it the hard way. They don't want to spoon feed you endgame. They don't want just anyone who reached 20 to get to the raid. They want you to put in the extra effort. Prove you really want it by getting a group together outside the game. Match making it the easy way. It's a crutch. It's something that didn't exist until recent years for raids and now you've become reliant on it. Just because you paid to get into the park, doesn't mean you're tall enough to ride the roller coaster.

            • My problem with raids is they keep insisting you need 6 very well experienced players that have excellent team work. BUT it requires SIX members where every other PvE game type caps you at THREE. How are you supposed to do these raids if you can't even practice for then with your full team? That's the real design flaw to me, they preach difficulty and excellent team work but give no way to practice for said difficulty with your full team.

              • I've been bouncing around the no MM for raids arguments and the main problem isn't the difficulty wall. I have no problem with that, in fact I support difficulty walls whole heartedly. It's the fact that they didn't put in MM and didn't put in general chat or proxy chat. They push the forums as the solution to a problem they created in game and the forums are always an atrocious social experience. I would never argue for easier content. I will however fight tooth and nail over a poorly thought out game design choice that creates a social wall. The solution to an in game issue should never be outside the game.

                • Well written article. I think it's just ridiculous how people get so pissed over the matchmaking topic. No one is stopping them from doing the raid, they're just making people actually take a bit of effort to make it happen.
