Kind of but at the same time no. You can get every weapon and frame w/o buying anything with RL money. What the platinum is used for its to buy the frames & weapons if you can't wait for them to be built and don't want to farm the mats. You can also use platinum to speed up your weapons/frames that are being built. The only things that you can only get with platinum are just cosmetics. There's a lot of different game modes and maps as well and the free running is fun. Try it out and see if you like it, its free after all:)
