Yeah having worked on a bunch of science fiction and fantasy shows and I can say we always tend to go with what's entertaining.
For example in space matte paintings we always tend to push what looks cool than what is accurate.
Milky Way doesn't look that big? Who cares! It looks awesome!
Haven't worked on Dr Who or Stargate (lol) but it's probably the same.

I view entertainment differently. I become immersed but I don't usually get taken out of it. I take everything at face value for what it is. I watch movies and television while being self aware....if that makes sense. Also I said "Stargate lol" because while being a great show, it has some of the worst VFX I have ever seen in a series. Even for tv.
