This is what happens when people over-hype themselves.

This maintenance period was something that was told to us beta players from the beginning of this process. We were told something near a week in advance that there was a scheduled period of time the beta wouldn't be available because of network fixing and server-side things being done on Bungie's end. When did it become a secret update period that nobody knew about? People all over this forum have, for the last several days, been talking about what they want or even expect to be seen after that maintenance was up. Now that it's over and, guess what, nothing was added to the beta, there are people with torches and pitchforks looking to lynch someone for something they were never told would happen. Why do we as gamers make this so hard to enjoy? I'm seriously curious as to where this sense of entitlement has come from.

  • We find that we didn't hype up enough, and that we are satisfied with the Beta than with any other game.

  • Simply put most gamers just aren't aware of the infrastructure behind games, it's all about visible content. While they fail to see the necessity of allocating time to the back end technology they'll be the first to complain when the game stability suffers.

  •
Why do we as gamers make this so hard to enjoy?
Answer - As gamers if we see a line we stand in it. We don't know what the line is for. We don't exactly know why we are in the line in the first place. But one thing we do know is... As a gamer logic is not a option. We are not classified as independent thinkers.. The best thing for the gaming community is to never give constructive criticism. Never voice your opinion. And just enjoy the mind numbing game play produced by hpyno toad.

This is the entitlement generation. Narcissistic, self-centered, self-gratifying and childish. I have been playing games since the 70s when space invaders and the Atari 2600 came out. Up until the last decade, the gaming community (and the internet as a whole) was for the most part, helpful and civil. Sure there were "trolls" in the 90s and 00's, but it was not a systemic cancer like it is now. It seems that today, people can't even recognize that they are being heard unless it's with an over the top trash-talking and hateful ideology. As a father, I really fear for my kid. Though I loathe to pontificate, it sometimes seems that most under the age of 30 are simply not able to deal with conflicting ideas or opinions (i.e. "Life") without a tourette-induced tantrum of anger ("STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!"). And GOD FORBID that something should not go they way they "think" it should...

    • I clicked on this post EXPECTING another "entitled self absorbed rant" about Destiny tbh! What I got instead was a well thought out message summing up my feelings about my entire experience surfing bungie.net forums for the first time (I joined when I pre ordered Destiny). I think, (and this is coming from someone who's been gaming since the old "Atari days" the 79 after my GT is my birthyear ;P) the new generation is simply spoiled by the amazing visuals, gameplay, and storytelling available in the modern forms of video games. Me? I'm amazed by the new tech and grateful for the strides they've made. Sure I want a good product who dosent? But I'm inclined towards patience with those who make my favorite hobby possible. I know there's a lot of mature younger gamers who feel the same way too. I just haven't met a lot on bungie.net...sounds like you have a similar problem OP. My sympathies! *srry for wall of text*

      • It stems from a generation that cares little for the sake of other people and more on personal achievements to make them believe that they are a perfect being. Perfection does not exist, but everyone can try what they can to make it a reality.

      • it comes from the generation that thinks everyone should get a trophy, the world owes them a living, and life should be fair. then they enter the real world. disappointment ensues and their unicorn shatters. welcome to the nightmare called life as you will know it as long as you breathe air.

The irony is... when Xbox players griped that they didn't get equal time, we got accused of entitlement issues... and then PS players go and turn around and gripe when nothing was changed after the maintenance... Go figure.

I don't really think its over-hyping as creating these false, unreasonable expectations. People take comments from Bungie and turn them into something else, analyzing every little letter in every little word, creating these insane conclusions by taking statements and twisting them, mutating them, destroying them and rebuilding them into these unrecognizable monstrosities. Maybe mommy and daddy got them 5 ponies for Christmas instead of 1 and everything else they ever wanted for years, and this is what happens.

Expectations and hopes...some can articulate them well, others fail miserably. Being a beta people no doubt assumed that Bungie will want to test more than just a single MP game mode on 2-4 maps (Iron Banners included). You also have the tease of the Moon Mission, available at level 6 but closed until final release. As its a location that remains hidden until you complete most of the story missions, why tease by adding it and making it appear as though you should have access? The forums are where fans come to discuss what they want to about Destiny, if you dont like it dont read the thread but it is more annoying coming to the forums to find new threads complaining about people complaining about the beta.

          • It IS a marketing demo! Do you think Bungie actually wanted us to find bugs? No! They are creating hype for the game. The game that has been presented to us so far is very clean and polished. Pff "beta"

            • The people are addicted. They have been given just enough to get addicted. They are talking to each other while they are high about how awesome this new drug is. Then the withdrawl starts to kick in, and when you feed them a bit more they realize hey this is good stuff but Jimbob told me it could make me fly... so WTF. I want the stuff that can make me fly... to the moon.. with the wizard... cuz its my Destiny fool. @DeeJ is both the Puppetmaster and the Pharmacist.

            • In general the sense of 'entitlement' comes from a couple things. First off, gamers still want something for their money. Maybe you don't work for yours so you don't care if you spend $65 for a piece of crap, but a lot of us are getting tired of shelling out cash for crap game after crap game. Myself, I've just stopped buying so many games and live on Steam now, but others don't want to transition to the PC so they complain. Simple fact is your most powerful complaint tool is to NOT BUY something, cause in the end that's all companies care about. So they get pissed because they're paying into things and not getting something that satisfies. 2nd is that this new 'generation' of gaming is the most pathetic technological jump in gaming history really, so older gamers like myself were expecting a much bigger technology jump from last gen to this gen than really happened, unless you switched to PC's which ARE as awesome as this new generation was SUPPOSED to be. Video gaming is becoming an insanely expensive hobby to up keep and it is becoming more and more disappointing almost every year. Finally with the advent of Kickstarters and Early Access content, gamers (especially PC gamers) are becoming much more used to and comfortable with interacting with the developers during the development process and giving feed back and ideas. It's OUR game after all, sure the developers make it, it's their baby, but in the end it lives or dies with US, not them. Ideally everyone should benefit from a transparent Developer - Consumer relationship, they can cater to the gamers more exactly but in exchange they have a product that sells better and longer. The problem comes with things like Destiny, which is a great game thus far, however if the Beta is any sign it's going to be monetized as hell and suffer horribly from the DLC curse of you only really get half a game and the rest comes on DLC so in the end the true WHOLE product cost more than $100. There's also the issue of expectations. It's fine to hope with lofty and unreasonable expectations, that's called dreaming, and dreaming is what makes awesome games. However when/if those EXACT expectations aren't met there are a good amount of people who flip their $h!t and go crazy. Myself, I just shrug and laugh and add the game to the massive list of crap that isn't worth my money. Issue is a LOT of people feel obligated to spend their money in this day and age, I don't understand it myself, but a lot of people get angry because they can't believe they paid so much for something which doesn't fulfill their expectations/desires, even though they're totally denying the REALITY that they didn't HAVE to buy the damn thing. They could have waited for reviews, tried it at a friends or who knows what else. In the end though their impatience coupled with an inability to accept that reality often falls short of expectation often creates a hostile and undesirable situation. Companies fail to price their product well in a failing economy, fail to listen to player input and fail to produce a complete product good enough for you to WANT more DLC. Players however fail to understand reasonable realistic expectations, fail to hold onto their money and wait to buy a product and fail to say NO to monetizing bastardized DLC centric business models. As a species we define ourselves through our hate and rage, the world is falling apart and a lot of us are angry about it, we're just misplacing that rage because it's easier to ignore the problem and be mad at something you have no control over than to get angry at something you obviously should be getting up off your @ss and doing something about.

              • One short and sweet answer the money, if you are dropping $60+ on a game you should feel entitled to something( unless ur using ur parents money)

Mobs feel a tad harder to kill and seem to do more damage, seems like a smidgen more heavy armour (edit meant to say ammo)is dropped during boss fights.... but that could well be my imagination.

It's not a gamer thing, it's a people thing. You'll always have people whose expectations aren't realistic, and the outcome is always the same, disappointment. This is a result of expecting with your feelings and believing that because you have a feeling, it'll be an eventual fact. You said it best, we were never told things would be added to the BETA, the only sliver of light that might have gotten gamers on the hook is the quote "We are treating the BETA like a full release." I just want August to fly by and see how I can manage the full release, work, my last STAT class, and my girlfriend all in one LOL.
