Destiny's Biggest Problem: It's a Social Game with No Communication

The beta has been great overall. There are some balance changes that are needed, but I'm confident that that can be ironed out. My biggest concern is that I've played 14 hours and I only talked to one person other than my two clanmates. Is it just me? Have you talked with anyone? There are two issues I think. 1) Voice Chat is really limited: - No voice chat in PVP. It's entirely team-based, but I can't talk to anyone? Is voice chat really limited to fireteams only? That's crazy limited. I just moved from 360 to PS4 so I don't have a lot of friends yet. It'd be cool to get to know some other Destiny players. - Is there really no voice chat in Strikes by default? Strikes are 3 person fireteams, but whenever I did a strike, no one talked. I clicked R3 on my teammate, invited them to my fireteam, at which point they went back to orbit, then re-entered the game and I could talk to them! How does that make sense? Is this really how it works? If we make voice chat more common, then we'll need options. Like "All", "Team" and "None". Just like Halo games. 2) If you accept that voice chat is going to be really limited, there's still no effective way to talk to teammates. The built-in gestures are fun in the Tower, but useless in the field. - Waving is good while exploring, but unhelpful during strikes. - Pointing is completely useless unless you're looking directly at your teammate. And even then it's only good for a direction, not pointing at an object. - Sitting? Why would I sit in an active battlezone? I suppose it's nice for sitting for screenshots with Bungie's beautiful skyboxes, but I don't *need* it like I do the stuff below. - Dancing is just fine. We really need combat-related gestures. Here are some ideas I brainstormed this morning. Feel free to add/criticize - Call target. Have you tried to take out that Demon Walker with a team that is just shooting at whatever they damn well please? Being able to really call out what to shoot will make teams much more effective. - Rally to me/ Regroup. Strikes start out in wide open explore territory. I had a teammate get distracted and wander off at the start and my other teammate charged straight ahead. There was no way to tell one to hurry up and the other to wait up. So very frustrating. It'd also be helpful for trying to group up in between waves like during the Strike. - Awesome/Thank You. Those two above are great for combat, but we need a way to interact with our teammates too. Someone resurrects you? Say thanks! You shoot a Stealth Vandal right before they knife your buddy? Now you can see that they appreciate it, rather than just them wandering away. - Keep dancing. It's fun to dance on the broken shell of Sepkis Prime. A few more ideas: "Help!" "Revive Needed!" "Follow me!" "Attack/Defend" Perhaps even a system like Dark Souls where you can "equip" various gestures. How do y'all feel? Agree? disagree? Big problem? Not a problem? I posted this on Reddit's Destiny subreddit, where it's gotten a lot of great feedback. I wanted to make sure it was seen here too. Edit: Thanks for all the great responses, everyone. And thanks for jumping in, DeeJ! Some things I wanted to highlight were: - This great mock-up of what an expanded gesture system could look like. - Some discussion on suggested individual voice settings for different play areas. - And a great solution that lets players decide up front what voice options they want, without a lot of fiddliness. I also wanted to point out with how well Hearthstone has done with limiting player interactions. It's a little different because it's not a team-based game, but like Dark Souls, it won't let players abuse each other. This is why I think gestures with non-friends is such a great option. It'll keep things positive and helpful but still let players participate who don't want to use/hear voice. I'm not sure how much of this is feasible for game that's going to release in 48 days (gold master is probably much sooner!). So these are some wishlist items to be sure. I hope we can make some voice changes by launch at the least and maybe keep an expanded gesture system in mind for future updates. Voice chat (or even free text chat) can definitely be abused, so Bungie's concern is totally valid. I'm glad they're listening to us and look forward to the response! P.S. This is my favorite response.

  • I think the point gesture should put down and indicator in the world (not the tower). Aim the reticle at something near or far, hit point, and a small indicator shows up. Since so many people exist in the world, it may need to be limited to fire teams or you can only point every 10-15 seconds

  • I agree with the gestures thing from DarkSouls that was a good idea. I also think the should work on the voice chat. You know how in arma people can hear u based on proximity? Well I think it should be like that.

  • I completely agree. This game needs and should encourage open communication! After the first time I defeated The Devil's Lair with the help of two guys I never met before, I wanted to personally thank them for helping me get past that daunting level. But I couldn't. Instead, the only thing we could do was wave at each other and dance. Unfortunately, that is a moment I'll never get back. I'm not going to invest my time and money in a game that only gives me half of what I need. The Tower begs for and desperately needs social interaction. What is the point of visiting just to kick around an inflatable ball? With this said, I know there will be players who go over the edge with communication. Racial slurs, bigotry, internet violence, will all be conveyed with allowing open communication. But, we should have the ability to report those players and someone at Bungie should actually take those reports seriously - unlike the COD universe! But, I have to keep in mind that this is only the beta. Perhaps, the final version will surpass my expectations.

  • Everything being so quite with no one talking really dampens the experience of a multiplayer game a lot. I find myself actually getting bored and just stop playing after a while.

I honestly think Bungies has a fantastic oportunity too create a following of social, dedicated and friendly gamers. So let us show the minority of d**ks that lack the respect towards other players, that gaming with others can be something truly special! And that using your mic while playing can really enhance your game. There is no downside in life being able to communicate through speech :)

  • it would be great if you could hold up for example and it would pop up an emote menu where you can choose whatever emotes you need and so the other buttons could be used for different things like the requested flashlight button on consoles that don't have the ps4 touchpad also at e3 sony said that destiny is better on the playstation? you need to make use of that function

  • I also noted voice chat doesn't always work even with friends which mean't we had to reset machines, log back in, re group and then launch to the destination again. But yes not many people talk, even when they get joined up in to your fire team as part of the Strike missions but then it's up to other people if they want to be sociable. However I certainly don't want to listen to a bunch of screaming, singing, swearing, racist, homophobic degenerates that seem to populate gaming from time to time and drive me mad searching for the mute button!

  • I agree the voice chat is needed, so is a mute. We need more emotes, but I don't want to be a sign ( as in sign language ) reader. We need a text chat option. A Devil Walker drops on you, nobody around? You text out a shout " HELP! " add more of course. You meet another Guardian out in the waste. Send him a tell " do you have voice chat? ". FF14 players know how this works. It does. A blacklist, or mute for this also. One more suggestion. A community board in the tower, accessible by ghost. We can post something like this: " DanielKBoom, looking for a party to farm Devils Lair for glimmer." When the party fills the post disappears. We know some players will farm, speed run, sight see. This will help us find groups to do what we all want to do. Good hunting Guardians!

Yeah I was pretty bummed when I found out that only my fireteam could hear each other. Especially considering all the cool effects they have if you set the chat sound to come from the speakers, like echos in caves and radio static at far distances. Running into a random person and dancing is fun and all, but I think it would help the immersion and communication if there was global voice chat. A scenario off the top of my head is running into a person in the level and he yells to us for help because there are high level enemies attacking him whereas normally, we would just pass him by cause there's no reason to think he needs help.

  • Voice chat is great if you have a clan or friends on , but not many of the people I want to play with are doing the beta. So as a test I set my options to Public for coms and never did a soul join my fireteam on request, most if invited just dropped. This actually looks to me like a great game , but if in tougher areas you need to have a team , this may cause people to have to go outside the game to get a Comm system that works.

    • I upvoted on reddit, and wanted to add a quick little story outlining the need for more communication in PvE. The other day I was exploring on my own when a Walker practically fell onto my head during a public event. I spent probably 3 minutes running and hiding because I was the only one there. If I had been able to send out an area-wide "distress signal", or say something in global voice chat (maybe it's limited to specific automatic phrases if Bungie doesn't want to allow people to just talk), perhaps I could have gathered people to help more quickly. During that time I almost said "need help" out loud thinking my Kinect would pick it up! There are SO many opportunities for a communication system that uses the Kinect! I love that system in BF4, and would love to see it here.

      • I suppose the lack of communication can be chalked up to the players' fault. I've spent most of my time in a party. I've only spoken to five, maybe seven people? One where he informed me he must've been high because the game was so real to him. Honestly the only problem I see is that fireteams are seat to friends only. I set mine to open and only two people actually jumped in and asked for my help (To which I pulverized their enemies with my hunter boss skills). I bet if fireteams were set to public by default we'd be forced to talk to each other.

      • MASSIVELY AGREE on the gestures/actions. having all the dancing and stuff is cool. But its a really big waste of 4 valuable buttons when your in combat. it should be UP: place a marker - if this were on an enemy eg the devil walker it could tell people to focus on one leg. If it were while exploring/placed on the land it could be a waypoint/point of interest DOWN: follow/come to me - useful if people drift off and you want to keep your team grounded or if you want to push up together RIGHT: help- for if your really in need or about to die. When dead this would be request revive. LEFT: anything else. perhaps keep the wave in there or dancing because they're pretty good

        • It's very simple.. Make each zone have chat options... Either you want it on or off that way people who don't like to talk or listen to people can turn it off and people that like to talk can turn it on! Just like MMO games they have different channels..

        • The communication is probably my biggest let down on this game so far. On multiplayer i cant chat with my own team this is wrong and has to be changed. Also i think that if you are within a certain distance of another player you should be able to chat automatically. I feel like the only way i can communicate with someone at this point is if they are on my fire team. It just seems like a hassle... MAKE IT EASIER FOR US TO COMMUNICATE
