Yeah it would be great if they put something as simple as "triangle" to go to orbit or "square" to return to the tower during the mission progress screen, because you already have to push and hold triangle to move on from that menu anyways

I would suggest triangle to go to orbit, circle to stay where you are, and x to go directly to the tower on mission completion to go with Playstation accept/cancel conventions and could be implemented at mission completion and from the Navy screen where square summons your Sparrow.
