Severe oversight in Destiny's social matchmaking

I heard about the Iron Banner event and figured I'd give it a shot. Firing up the Beta, I hovered over the event, and locked in my place. I did this alone, without a fireteam. I had no idea that I'd be punished for playing with other random gamers. Hooking up my headset, I realized there was no banter or chatter. I thought that was a bit strange, but I continued to communicate with players regardless, spotting out enemies and the like. Little did I know that this was falling on deaf ears: it appears you can't communicate with anyone who's not in your "fireteam". In a gametype like Control, communication is key. If you don't have communication you're running around and providing easy kills for gamers who ARE coordinated. In essence, you're just re-spawning kill fodder. Suffice it to say after four consecutive games where I couldn't talk to anyone, I realized something was wrong. So I took to Twitter and found a few others who were having the same problem. We're all getting punished for not making a pre-formed fireteam. Way back in 2013, Bungie said that gamers could only chat with players in their fireteam. http://gamingprobe.com/2013/12/18/destiny-multiplayer-details-health-maps-voice-chat-team-sizes-playlists/ But hang on. Why is there a discrepancy between your fireteam and your actual multiplayer team? Why do we need to take a minute to invite these players to a PSN party (where a lot of them will ignore the invite anyway)? Is this how multiplayer games are supposed to be? Share your frustration with this severe oversight so that we can get Bungie to fix this and stop giving other players the upper-hand because they have more PSN friends. I hope to see that this isn't implemented in the final version or people will be severely disappointed. Furthermore I'm not sure how this has been looked over...this is the kind of thing Bungie needs to know we're not happy about.

  • I agree with enabling proximity chat and having the option to mute or even "ignore" players altogether if you find them toxic or unpleasant. The social interaction is so limited that it's actually taking away from the game rather than "benefitting" us by restricting it the way it is.

  • The lack of in game chat is especially concerning for those playing on ps4 or xbox one where there might not be that many friends available. Also even if you were on an older console, you can't expect every person to have 6 friends available and willing to play the same game as them every time one person feels like playing said game. It just seems like an unrealistic scenario in the real world and personally it doesn't make any sense to me as it defeats the purpose of a truly connected gaming experience by severely limiting the amount of time someone is able to play the game the way that it was meant to be played.

I agree they need to add communication either via emotes or some other method and whoever is in your party should be able to hear you you're right I agree with you.

  • I agree with all things in this topic! I would also like to see PVE fireteams increased to 4 people but I doubt that will happen.

  • Agreed. I've met some of my best buds over game chat in halo. If I wanted to only talk to my fire team, I would just make a party. This really needs to be fixed.

  • I get people that don't want to hear others in game. But feel it should be an option to hear , mute one , or mute all. There should also be a mic symbol in the gamer tag to let you know their status.

  • Exactly, I don't understand why the team of 6 in the Crucible is not automatically a fireteam????

  • This is cray cray Bungie. Open up the chat line and give us a mute option. Simples.

    • My only problem with the game, the utter total lack of communication, this is horrible and needs to be addressed. They stress the use and need for team work in this game yet give us no communication between player's outside of 2 people in your fire team. This is a huge mistake.

    • Solution, for now: Xbox Live parties or whatever Playstation uses that's similar. But as for players you just meet in Destiny, game chat is essential. Including in the Tower and anywhere else where you can interact with players. Concept for PvE: Proximity chat for PvE and Tower. Only hear players near you so you don't have to worry about that random person a mile away. He doesn't matter. I think no game chat in PvP is stupid. Every game has it, because it is necessary.

    • I would agree as well. This is something I was not aware of until playing the Beta itself and I had actually hoped to have Destiny increase my PSN network with more people to consistently play with and I feel this new system prohibits that from taking place. Part of playing a game such as this online with others should allow us to be able to meet new people so that we can play with them on teams in Destiny as well as future games. When I played the original Halo 2 & 3 online on Xbox Live I enjoyed it immensely getting to meet new people and add those I enjoyed playing with so that I could play in teams with them again in the future. Just my 2 cents.

      • Its not just matchmaking either, there should be proximity chat for things like the tower and missions too! If you are playing through a mission and you see another player doing the same thing you should be able to walk right up to him and say, "hey, wanna work together?" Same thing for the tower. You could easily make friends and recruit fire teams just by standing in an area and saying exactly that! And for the people that want to enjoy the game in a classic campaign style, just disable the proximity chat. This is a fundamental flaw in destiny and it would be an even better game if it were fixed.

        • Exactly what I posted twice in different sections. Not only is this a problem with PvP, but with PvE as well. I'm brand spanking new to the Playstation Network and have zero friends. So I have to randomly (and awkwardly) keep inviting people to do fire teams and other activities?

        • Completely agree. There should be an option when the game has quite an emphasis on grouping and multiplayer content. Those who don't like the chat should have the option to turn off all/some chat channels, and those who want to talk should have the right to talk to others in a better way.

        • Games have implements a mute all option for a reason. How are you supposed to find new people to play with if you sit in silence. I would hate to invite a person that seemed to be on a similar skill level only to find out that I have no chemistry with them and thus immediately regret my decision.

        • Team chat is a staple of FPS PVP. Call of Duty, Halo, Battlefield, etc. all have the option to speak to your group. +1 the OP for saying how crucial coordination is for PVP.

I enjoy the silence it's nice. I have won in pvp I have had fun in strikes all without voices or chat boxes. Don't try to fix what isn't broken.

          • I'll post this here because I agree. Hey thanks for the BETA access. While playing there are two things that HAVE to change before release. 1-The lack of group or co-op being natively integrated into play. 2-why are we separated into a solo "boss encounter". If anyone is in the world instead of showing an indicator that someone is nearby...have the system pop-up to join or enter co-op mode. In options let ppl choose if they do or do not want these experiences. This is an online open world shooter. Why does it seem like you're trying to have a single player game in an open world. This is the same issue with The Elder Scrolls Online. If I'm to play solo then why am I connected online? Make a decision, if it's an online game allow us to auto group and chat within that group unless I have settings set not to auto group and or not to chat. You have a really awesome game here but these two concerns can be the difference of 6/10 vs 9.9/10 rating at launch. Please, please, please change this ASAP.

          • You explained it very well. This is supposed to be a social game, so why are we being forced to be antisocial. Creating parties takes time and there is simply no quick fix for us. Game chat needs to exist. Bungie can say, oh just use your console chat, but that's just them wimping out and B.S.-ing us. It is simply ridiculous and childish. They should be ashamed.

          • I agree, I think if your mic is plugged in and you are playing Crucible, but not in a fireteam, I think your chat should be broadcast to the whole team as default. Alongside functional mute options, this should not be too much of a problem for gamers who do not want to hear online chatter. It's pretty much how every other online shooter works. What we have now which isn't intuitive.

            • I agree, all other games have this and it only makes sense that you can talk to those on your team... That should be default and u should have the option to mute just like any other 1st per shooter out there. So lame that there is no talking in a team effort.
