Fireteams are awfully clunky for such a socially-oriented game

Currently, if you join a person's fireteam - even if you're standing right next to them in the world - it forces you go back to orbit and then reload the map area, often placing you leagues from the person who sent you the invite. Likewise, having your partner leave and disband the fireteam causes you to drop back to orbit and reload the area you were just in. Instead of feeling like a social MMO, it feels more like a traditional multiplayer game where you go to a lobby and form a group before undertaking a mission, and leaving that party forces you to exit back to the lobby again. It needs to be much more seamless, where I can drop in or drop out of a group dynamically without being forced to sit through a loading screen just to get back to the same area I was already in.

I completely agree, the game feels great to play solo but it really falls apart when trying to play with friends. Everyone I play with feels the same way. It just doesn't feel like an MMO. My main issues are: - If I'm in a Fireteam and want to nip back to town I have to take my friend with me, or he has to leave. Why can't we be in the same party and still do our own thing like in every other MMO I've ever played? - Why do we have to reload the map if we form a Fireteam when we're right next to each other? Likewise why we have to reload the map when we disband the Fireteam - Why can't my Fireteam see the mission/place I've marked on the map? - Why can't I see my Fireteam's health and super status? We're all enjoying the game immensely, but playing together is cumbersome and a big low point for the game when it should the complete opposite. We've all played WoW, Guild Wars, Rift and many other MMOs together and we've never felt this way before.

  • Having to use the SLOW ps4 invite system is garbage. Only being able to make 3 man teams is stupid as well, I have 4 friends who play, and when we want to olayy together we have to PvP. Its not like letting us do strikes would break anything. Maybe wed kill the bullet sponge boss a few minutes sooner... But its not like we haven't already farmed the same stuff 30+ times each by now.

    • Huge bump. It was probably the most frustrating part of the game that we played in beta. Who knows, it may have been resolved by now or Launch Patched. But it needs to be in.

    • Agreed. The ability to instantly join/start a fireteam rather than return to orbit to have to sparrow over to where the other team member(s) is would be extremely beneficial. There were times when I chose not to join a fireteam due to the fact that I did not want to have to load back to orbit, listen to the mission intro, and have to ride, or one time walk, to where everyone else was. If it was a much faster loading process, and if the ship could drop me off close by, that would even be more preferrable, but on the spot joining, as evidence by everyone one else here, would be the best. I'd even take a day one update for the game!

      • I agree. There were several times where I was invited to join fire teams while I was in the middle of a fight and would have gladly joined them if I didn't have to quit what I was doing, go to space, come back, and start over I. The world again.

      • I agree. Ever since they started warning everyone "it's not an MMO repeatedly" I knew it was because they would be offering half hearted MMO elements and they didn't want to get hammered by the community for it. Sure we understand it's an instanced FPS but the game should run smoothly so that everyone can enjoy it. It should just feel natural. Fireteams and social elements/ lobbies feel awkward now.

This game is an instanced FPS. Sorry, but I've been a hardcore MMORPG peep for over a decade now. This is a lobby shooter. There's no comparison to massively multiplayer here. But be grateful, because if there was, you'd either be paying a monthly sub or wicked cash shop prices to unlock parts of the game, all in the name of helping to financially support a bunch of massively multiplayer servers. I agree with you, man, don't get me wrong-- and it would be great! But Destiny is not a massively multiplayer online game, it's a lobby shooter with little LAN-type teams, one extra NPC town (the Tower) and a couple RPG-like special attacks on long cooldowns. But it is still by and large a lobby shooter. Phasing should definitely be improved, though- teammates shouldn't have to jump through three hoops just to get to each other in an instance.

Agreed. With the emphasis being placed on some of the game’s social elements, fireteams need to be much easier. If you stumble across a couple other players in Explore mode, say in the middle of an event, you should be able to form a fireteam without even pausing the fighting – you shouldn’t have to navigate a bunch of menus and certainly shouldn’t have to o anything outside of the game itself. Taking two existing elements of the interface – using the D-pad for social functions and using a long press (press & hold) to access some functions – improving fireteam forming should be relatively easy. Long-press D-pad up – invite player to fireteam Long-press D-pad right – accept invitation Long-press D-pad left – decline invitation Long-press D-pad down – leave fireteam You should automatically form a fireteam when entering a Strike mission, regardless of your privacy settings. Voice coms with the entire team should function in the Crucible, fireteam or no. Yes, this is an FPS, but it’s not just an FPS. There are a lot of MMO/RPG elements in the game already – classes, character development, inventory, gear upgrades, a social space in the Tower, etc. One thing I don’t understand is how the Tower is supposed to function as a social space allowing you to form fireteams if the only way to communicate is via voice if you’re already in a fireteam. Text chat is going to be extremely cumbersome on a console, but some sort of communication solution is necessary.

          • I agree with your comments on fireteams. I also think settings should stay what you had them on last since I got sick of fireteam setting reverting to friends only every time I logged in again when I wanted them public.

          • There was also times the message stating a fire team was full when it wasn't. And friends in game standing in front of you were not visible regardless of being in the same difficulty setting and same location. I hope this is rectified by launch. There was times the only way I could join fire teams was when they were already on planet amidst a gunfight instead of in orbit or at the tower. Really hoping Bungie clarifies the ease of use on fire teams so launch day there's no problems. ;o)

          • I agree, chat only works for me in a private party which goes against being social to others. Also what happened to joining your friends fireteam via your ship like the first demo?

Um...none of this has happened to me. I randomly encountered one of my friends and joined his fire team. I wasn't sent to orbit and when he disbanded the fire team I just got a notice that the fire team was disbanded, again not being sent to orbit. Either it is a glitch or a settings option. I selected "everyone can join my fire team" in the settings. The only time I was sent to orbit was when I was in the tower. My friend also was in the tower and as a pint of meeting, we set the gunsmith's gun shop. He couldn't see me, though I was in front of Banshee. So he sent me a invite and when I accepted it I was brought to orbit and back into the tower. Then my friend was able to spot me. The reason this happened was because we were at different instances of the tower. since all areas in the beta can hold a max of 16 players. Once the cap is reached the game opens a new instance of the area so that other 16 players can populate it.

I agree. I don't like the way fire teams are setup now. Also I think you should be able to see players crucible stats when you look at them.
