Why ESO sucks and will fail on consoles

It is subscription based. That is all.

The big issue is end game content, which is why ESO will likely fail. It was the same issue with SWTOR, after the storyline quests (which were actually pretty fun to play through) you basically had nothing to do. After the initial month or so, sub levels plummeted and it went F2P a little less than a year later. The model in that game is so broken now because basic features (like more ability bars, better equipment) are put behind a pay wall. I feel like ESO is going to walk a similar road, because after the initial launch numbers are going to fall as the core MMO crowd burns through the content. The only ones playing 6 months down the line are the fewer diehard fans. That's my prediction.

      • I'm just so freaking glad that pile of shit is being developed by ZeniMax and won't interfere with the development of TES:VI.

I agree, anyone who uses World of Warcraft as an argument then keep in mind that World of Warcraft was released when the MMO genre wasn't as big, and F2P wasn't still a big thing. If you want to have a paid subscription without failing then you have to provide really high quality content, stability and so on that can match or outmatch World of Warcraft, something that ZeniMax media is likely incapable of doing seeing this is their first game, where the Bethesda people are only acting as counselors. Blizzard before World of Warcraft had made a lot of games, and had plenty of time to come up with design ideas and ways to match EverQuest, and also mixing the Warcraft universe in a proper way to make this working.

      • I hardly think the subscription will be an issue. WoW, arguably one of the most defining MMORPGs, subscription-based or otherwise, has maintained a subscriber base of millions for over nine years. Another notable example is EVE. In my opinion, the biggest obstacle for any MMORPG is originality. Everything from game mechanics to the UI have to be simple and generic enough to be easily interpreted (especially in combat), and yet must be unique enough to set them apart from other games in the genre. Story is also essential, and delivery is especially important in an established universe such as that of Warcraft or The Elder Scrolls. Fans of a particular universe, or those delving into a new universe, expect a high calibre of story delivery and depth in MMORPGs. This, I would assume for a large majority of players, is especially important when subscriptions are involved. PvP is also expected to provide an immersive experience, and is expected to be balanced such that no character class has a decisive advantage over another. Many players (from my experience) dedicate themselves exclusively to PvP, so having PvP content on par with PvE content is important. The list could go on, but the point that I am trying to convey is that subscription fees are irrelevant if the quality of the game is such that the fees are necessary to maintain the game's quality. TL;DR: Subscription fees are the least of your worries.

      • I'll probably get it now that my money from my university's come through unless it's not enough to cover it... Or I might wait until I have all the games that I want first, or I might decide not to bother though right now, I'm considering it...

      • I'm not getting it until the subscription prices go down a little. I can afford it and all, I just don't think it's worth $15 a month.

      • Plenty of MMO's use sub models and do well therefore your point is invalid. Why don't you go and bitch at MS and SONY if you want the LIVE/PS+ paywall lifted. You don't get special treatment for not being a PC user.

          • So? Xbox Live costs 5 bucks a month and if you buy it when it's on sale (like I do yearly), I've cut that cost down to 2.5 a month. So if it is something that you really like, 210 a year isn't that bad. I'm also sure that they are going to offer a free trial/up to lvl 10 or something like WoW does.

              • That alone clearly isn't enough to make a game fail, the reason I predict ESO won't do well is that its subscription based, on top of many other faults.

                • I find the whole thing where we have to pay a subscription fee to play the game even though we are already paying one to play games online I think is bullshit. But it wouldn't be so bad if the fee wasn't so damn high. Just for a year the fee cost $180. That's more than half the fee for Live and PSN which allows you to play all your games online, but this. $40-$60 a year would be a lot more responsible. I know I don't have to pay for a full year, but if I want to play it every now and then I'm going to have to pay a month or so just to play it a couple times a week.

                  • Subscriptions will definitely hurt the game and it's the main reason I will not get the game. Not sure if it will be a bad MMO but what I have seen didn't really impress me either.
