Minimum wage; A differing opinion

IMO, in the situation the video describes it makes total sense. However, the real world is a very complex and intricate thing and the issue can't really be summed up in a single video or forum thread. Now feed my inquiring spirit, flud.

Higher minimum wage = more people entering job market, all while companies are removing positions due to said higher wages. More unemployment yay.

The thing is people complain for w.e reason that the higher minimum wage increases everything else. Only problem is that everything increases in price regardless of what the minimum wage is. People used to be able to live one income now you struggle paycheck to paycheck. Inflation is a wonderful thing. So if they dont increase the minimum wage the gap between the rich and poor get larger and larger. Remember it wasnt long ago people Were Working here for 30 cents an hour.

Businesses will have to let go of more employees because they cannot afford to pay all those people any more money. Unions have done their job. Thanks for the weekend and eight hour work days! Here in Europe, we are being squeezed dry by money grabbing Jews, with the recession costing many people their jobs together with a 60% unemployment rate for young adults such as myself ( 19 ). I work in a steel mill where I'm getting payed around 600EUR a month ( 500EUR are minimum wages in Slovenia ) for some heavy duty physical work that reaches 56 hours a week, together with night shifts and working through holly days. It's in Slovenia, by the way. And I'm fortunate to even have a job! Social nationalism needs to come back! Because of democracy, my country ( Slovenia ) has been squeezed dry ever since 2004, when we joined the EU. Leading to the current recession.

2 RepliesThis is not an uncommon opinion. Unfortunately, the predicted results don't tend to work out: raising the minimum wage doesn't affect unemployment. Instead, businesses either become more efficient or pass the cost along to customers. On the other hand, a higher minimum wage allows people to spend more money, thereby sustaining other jobs and pushing growth. In a depressed or weak economy, this can be useful. I tend to oppose the idea of a living wage because I don't think people should be making a living off of unskilled labor; instead, unskilled work should be a stepping stone to skilled work. A means to an end rather than an end itself. A minimum wage restricts the ability of the employer to pay for what the work is actually worth, and it holds people back from advancing beyond unskilled labor. Unfortunately, the US isn't in a position to handle the alternative. Poverty is systemic and self-perpetuating. Staggering wealth inequality has decreased opportunities for those closer to the bottom of the ladder. And an incredibly polarized and special-interest-influenced government is ineffective at dealing with these issues. Nobody should have to think about supporting themselves, let alone their families, on minimum wage unskilled labor. We should be able to let the market decide what the real value of this work is, and the jobs should be held on a temporary basis while workers gain the skills they need to advance. But these are all things that "should" happen. I am not confident that they can.

My value in human capital and skills earned in a degree do not entitle me to some sort of advanced worker minimum wage so why should unskilled workers with little value be guaranteed a certain wage when the market doesn't value them at that wage? The market doesn't care who you are, what you do or what you know. You get paid according to your worth in productivity. When you have a minimum wage you distort all this.

5 RepliesWhile I don't have an opinion on whether it should be raised or not, people may want to be careful not to raise it too high. A lot of low skill jobs can be replaced with machines and robots and they are more effective than people.

It's an unpopular opinion to oppose raising minimum wage, but it's a naïve decision to support it. When arguing about minimum wage, you have to decide between being an asshole or an idiot. There really isn't an alternative.

This basically annihilates the most common argument against the minimum wage; increases in unemployment.

1 ReplyWhat's most funny is that the video only discusses the negatives that solely impact the poor. Aside from the direct negative consequences, the increased cost of cheap labor will result in increased prices. Businesses won't simply cut their losses and move forward. Goods and services across the board will inflate, hurting the middle/upper class, and eliminating the benefit of the increased minimum wage, since it's now being "taken back" (so to speak) due to inflation.

Employers who don't want to pay the minimum wage just pay under the table. I don't think that people should see the minimum wage as a livable wage.
