Spartan IV´s Aren´t Even Spartans

Got this bit of information from Halo: Initiation, which was posted by a fellow member who go the comic on Halo Archive. If you love Halo´s lore, check the site out. We´re always discussing any new news or information on anything Halo related.
The originals had augmentations not unlike the Spartan IIs, unbreakable bones, super strength, all of which the current IVs only have thanks to their armor. 8 of the 9 originals died after their augmentations
Finally information about the SIV´s augmentations have been released and, just as I had thought, they don´t have augmentations on par with Spartan II´s or even Spartan III´s. All their strenght and reflexes come thanks to MJOLNIR gen 2 essentially, which literally doesn´t even make them Spartan´s anymore, just marines/ODST´s in fancy armor. Apart from the fact that the augmentations, on the first batch, were even more lethal than the Spartan II´s were and dozens of times more than the Spartan III´s first batch. I´ve always stated that they were not up to level of the Spartan III´s and that they were objectively worse than Spartan III´s in pretty much all fields. Now we know that a Spartan III in SPI armor is pretty much equal to a Spartan IV in MJOLNIR in terms of physical prowess. With all the training and field experience Spartan III´s have, they curbstomp Spartan IV´s. And not let even talk about Spartan III´s with MJOLNIR armor...

  • I like to imagine that after the whole fiasco with augmentations on the S-IIs and then the S-IIIs (mostly the twos) the higher ups didn't look too kindly on augmentation. So who cares really? They're Spartans, regardless of if they have unbreakable bones or steroids running through their system. The only thing the S-IVs need to improve on is their armor now. The fact that the MJOLNIR Gen 2 Armor gives them the strength to break an Elite's neck is also pretty badass, remember the whole point of the augmentations in the first place was because the armor was impossible to wear, after the war and collecting Covenant samples of their armor they probably picked up some tricks to not have to augment themselves.

        • After reading through this thread a little, I'm not going to argue about which Spartans are better, because it seems like quite a few people have covered it. I do, however have a problem with the fact that 343 states that the IV's are just as good as the II's because more advanced armor. It seems like a lazy route to explain something away, and makes me feel like the journey I went through with the Spartan II's while reading the books was all for naught.

              • Spartan 4s have unbreakable bones, heart modifications allowing them to outrun a horse (they can run over 40 mph out of their armor), their muscles are modified to be more dense and react more quickly, they can breathe any gas due to lung modifications (for about an hour), they have digestive modifications to absorb all nutrients from food they eat, their blood is modified to clot almost instantly when wounded, and they can see at night due to eye surgery. Those are just the major surgeries. I'm sure they also have super steroids. So all in all they are physically better than the 2's in all fields except raw strength. This is all from the halo wiki though.

              • Okay, you're all saying totally different things. Which is better: Spartan II armor, or IV? And who's better without armor?

Gen 2 armor is more advanced; Frank O'Connor has said that while out of armor a SII would handily beat a SIV, in-armor they're fairly equal. So Gen2 MJOLNIR boosts a normal human to the level of a fully armored Spartan II. So long as they can punch through tanks, outrun a car and shoot with superhuman accuracy, yes they are still Spartans in practice whether you like it or not. Although normal human is relative here.
Bones are infused with a substance that makes them nearly unbreakable. Muscles are injected with a material that allows them to work harder without breaking the subject's skeleton. Corneal implants are provided to improve night vision. Heart is implanted with a synthetic weave which significantly increases its capacity to pump blood, allegedly allowing a SPARTAN-IV to "outrun a horse". Lungs are lined with a polymer that enhances oxygen intake and allows them to process toxins or foreign gas mixtures, potentially allowing a SPARTAN-IV to breathe methane for around an hour. Intestinal bacteria are altered to enable the digestive system to absorb more nutrients out of food. Pancreas is replaced by a completely new, vat-grown organ. Blood is altered to allow for faster clotting. Subject is given several implants to help medical teams keep tabs on them.[28] A series of additional augmentations were included in the earliest, prototypical phase of the program. While these enhancements would have made the Spartans significantly stronger and more resistant to injury, they proved to have an unacceptable casualty rate, killing or crippling nine of the ten initial candidates while leaving the sole survivor mentally unstable.[22]
They don't have the same level of strength unarmored, but they DO have advantages no other Spartan has.

                  • They're no more spartans than Spartan 3's are spartans. Their suit is said to give a rough equivalent of strength to that of a spartan 2.

                    • I'd have to agree. I had heard that Spartan-IVs were volunteers, not even abducted when they were children like the Spartan-IIs. And I didn't know that they weren't receiving augmentations. If this is the case, it's practically heresy to even call them Spartans. They have neither the mental nor the physical capacities of their predecessors.

                        • Are Spartan IIIs with MJOLNIR armor supposed to be better than Spartan IIs with MJOLNIR armor? The Spartan IIIs had quite a bit more intensive training than the Spartan IIs right? Wasn't their training shorter though? (Also keep in mind that the Spartan IIs would have been in service doing real military missions longer than the Spartan IIIs.)

All their strenght and reflexes come thanks to MJOLNIR gen 2 essentially, which literally doesn´t even make them Spartan´s anymore, just marines/ODST´s in fancy armor.
I don't see how having strength and reflexes determines if they are Spartans or not. They are still super human just like the other Spartans. Also since we're on the strength thing the armor is also what makes a Spartan 2 and 3 stronger. It enhances their strength. So by your logic they are not Spartans since the armor is what gives them a strength boost.
Just marines/ODST´s in fancy armor.
About that... -Bones are infused with a substance that makes them nearly unbreakable. -Muscles are injected with a material that allows them to work harder without breaking the subject's skeleton. -Corneal implants are provided to improve night vision. -Heart is implanted with a synthetic weave which significantly increases its capacity to pump blood, allegedly allowing a SPARTAN-IV to "outrun a horse". -Lungs are lined with a polymer that enhances oxygen intake and allows them to process toxins or foreign gas mixtures, potentially allowing a SPARTAN-IV to breathe methane for around an hour. -Intestinal bacteria are altered to enable the digestive system to absorb more nutrients out of food.
Apart from the fact that the augmentations, on the first batch, were even more lethal than the Spartan II´s were and dozens of times more than the Spartan III´s first batch.
So in order to be a Spartan your program has to kill the majority of the subjects? Also with that logic the Spartan 3's are not Spartans since the survival rate for them is 100%.

Indeed, the Spartan-IVs are inferior. Also, their in-game depiction does not help them at all.
