The Top 5 Reasons I'm Worried About Destiny

Inevitably, people are going to have some sort of issue or issues with Destiny's gameplay or mechanics. Nearly every game does, even the mighty GTA:V has people complaining about the online component. If you are worried about anything with Destiny, post it here, but try to stick to gameplay and mechanics. Everyone knows people want it for PC. If you want to have an argument, that's fine as well, but "It's Bungie" isn't an argument to me. I haven't played Halo, I've been a Playstation guy for 15 years.

  • Your concerns are valid, but invalid at the same time. Bungie knows rare weapons won't be super rare. They know that most people will get most of the weapons, especially completionists. However, that doesn't mean everybody will be using the same weapon, even if 2 people are using the same weapon, those weapons could be drastically different from each other. Lets use 'Thunderlord' for example. I could have Thunderlord, and I could spend my gold or whatever it is into making it a heavy spray electric damage weapon, while someone else puts their gold into making their Thunderlord into a more accurate gun. There are skill trees for your weapons, and while we don't know much about them, or if they branch out all that much, the point is, even if I do pick up a Thunderlord, I may not want to use it over my common gun, because I've put so much into my run of the mill gun, that it's just as badass as the Thunderlord, maybe more badass. For exploration: If you don't like to explore, that's your perogative, I'm sure there will be loot and treasure scattered throughout Destiny, for those brave enough to go exploring the wilds. Aside from treasure there will be mysteries and secrets to be found out there. Borderlands syndrome: There is poised to be a bunch of stuff to do other than shoot bad guy, pick up loot, repeat. Races, PvP, PvE, gambling, etc. Since you haven't played Halo, or at least you've said you've been a playstation guy for the past 15 years, you don't really know what a Bungie game is all about. The community takes the game and makes it theirs. With races and made up sports, like griffball. While these things were born from the community, Bungie has since then made them actual gametypes AND have made it easier for the community to create these unique experiences by giving them the tools they need to do so. I doubt this is going to stop with Destiny, I feel it's only going to get stronger. The public events, yeah, I see them being X event, in Y place, at Z hours. However, maybe there are X1, X2, X3 events that could happen in place Y, and it's randomly chosen, and this happens at Z hour, or close to Z hour when enough players are in proximity to that area. I don't see anything wrong with this. Especially since a game designer wants their customers/players to experience the fullness of the game. They hand crafted these awesome events for a vast amount of players to experience them. It's be silly to think this awesome 'public' event would only happen once, and whoever got to experience, got to experience it, and that's that. If you weren't online for that awesome thing, you're shit out of luck. No, that's not how it's going to happen. Special holiday type events, yeah, I could see those happening, but the run of the mill daily public event.. those are going to happen repeatedly. Could they be randomized in a way? Maybe, X amount of Vandals, X amount of Devil Walkers, maybe the faction that's attacking is randomized, so you might fight Cabal instead of The Fallen. Who knows? But I think that these public events will definitely be replayable in some fashion, that it won't be a one time occurence. I don't know what you're talking about 'end game content'. You can do pretty much whatever you want as end game. You can replay missions, play PvP, play PvE, do races, gamble, etc. Explain more in-depth as what you want to see as 'end game'.

    • Holy crap this is an old thread. Interesting to read what people were expecting and hoping for before Destiny came out. I'm no destiny hater so forgive me but I have to say this...so many crushed dreams.

    • Honestly, I don't think the mass exodus of players we see in most games, as soon as endgame is reached, has as much to do with so called endgame content as we tend to think. It's actually due to extremely linear storylines, questing systems, and ease of progression. Once the player's rapid train ride to "endgame" comes to a full stop, the inertia sets in. Confused and frustrated as to what to do next, the player declares they're bored and heads for the exit. How is this remedied? Increased difficulty in progression and activities within the game that the player will want to do that have little to do with racing to the end. It also doesn't hurt if the game world is somewhere people like to be, whether something is happening or not. In a lot of ways, it would help if the player was encouraged to slack. In any case, most modern MMOs utterly fail at these things. Even those that do provide significant endgame content fail at keeping the player's interest. Mainly, I think, developers struggle to understand how this phenomenon actually works.

Not worried at all. Pre-ordered it today from Amazon and look forward to playing the beta. The game looks sick and the ideas/story behind it make sense to me, so can't wait.

            • There should only be one concern, and that's with the community. The community is always the first part of a game to fall short of expectations. Trolls, haters, fanboys, etc all exist among the community and all are the most likely to ruin someone's experience before anything else will.

              • My worries about Destiny: WHY CANT I HAVE IT YET!!!!!? And that is all. I trust Bungie to do their best. A few of my friends have suggested to me because Im such a huge fan "Watch Destiny completely suck." I respond with "Its Bungie! I they made a bad game they would burn down their own building before we could get there."

                5. Your points on exploration would be valid if they were founded in any sort of logic. There's no reason for them to just make miles and miles of endless mountain ranges and landscape. There's going to be stuff within the mountain ranges and wilderness and forests and deserts. I literally see no reason why there would not be. Even if "it [wasn't] Bungie", no developer would or should feel compelled to do this. It'll just result in people disliking the game for not utilizing that space. 4. The different game modes (Raid, Strike, Story Mode, Faction Wars, and, I'm assuming, Free Roam) seem like more than enough to supplement someone who doesn't want to go on an infinite "kill things; get things" marathon, though I doubt that's what gameplay will be like. This is a situation where "it's Bungie" seems applicable as I never felt that this was instituted in Halo. Just because you haven't played Halo doesn't mean Bungie's track record therewith is discredited or dissolved. 3. The Thunderlord could very easily be something you get after a very difficult quest line or after killing a super difficult raid boss or something of that nature. You have these things in WoW and, while there's quite a few people who have that sword, helmet, chestpiece, etc., it's still fairly rare and hard to get, and is still a sight to be seen. 2. Perfectly valid concern. 1. Haven't they stated that they're going to keep adding on Chapters via updates or something? And you can probably only do Chapters in sequence and if you're level appropriate. So story-wise, I don't see "max-level" people getting bored. As far as Raids go, hopefully Bungie's learned a thing or two from other MMOs and realized that they need a plethora of max-level Raids to satisfy its max-level player-base. Additionally, there's always matchmaking in the form of "Faction Wars" which I'm sure accounts for player level when matching you with other people. And, again, free roam. While your concerns have some considerable merit in some respects and aren't totally unfounded, I feel as if many of them will be set at ease either at launch or via information drops over the coming months. I liked the video though. If you were thinking about doing more in the future, I definitely recommend it.

Nice post. 1. Hearing that destiny will have a arena playlist kinda makes me worry on if you'll only be able to obtain the BEST pvp gear by just doing arena, like in WoW. 2.No world pvp in destiny :( dunno if itll have it or not, although I see it in gta so I doubt it won't. 3.Bungie making raid bosses too easy, I would love to have a really hard challenge when I'm up against every raid boss, so if my raid is able to defeat the boss it'll make us feel awesome ;). 4. Destiny not being cross platform. 5. Overpowered class or classes in pvp. I'm sure there's going to be one (or more) dominant class in pvp, I just hope bungie doesn't crack under all the complaints and just starts going ape shit on changing things that dont need changing. Other then that,I can't wait for destiny. :)

                • Kinda sucks that the halo series wasn't on playstation, you guys are missing out. And in regards to my fears for the game: I have none. I decided to put my expectations as low as possible in all categories, I don't want to be disappointed. (I'm not trying to sound like a halo/Xbox fanboy with my first sentence, plenty of games I'm not able to play on the Xbox)

                  • I didn't watch the whole video yet (watching in between working), but I'm confused about your first point. I couldn't understand your stance on exploration.. you say that you feel obligated to explore most games just because they put hidden items in the nooks and crannies. However you seem not to want to explore a vast barren mountain range. I take it you want somewhere in between.. Like landmarks (i.e. not full blown missions) scattered around that are worth stopping at to explore in a little more depth?

                    • Well, If I have to make any concerns of mine known they have to be about the 'living world', weapons and customization. Living World: Ive been a fan of Bungie since Halo: CE, and I know they deliver what they promise, but Living World promises tend to fall flat, like with Defiance. Sure, things happen all the time in the game, Shadow Wars, Arkfalls, Sieges and the like, but they go stale almost instantly, for Example: Hellbug Mature Hellion Arkfalls are the same creatures, the same spawn patterns, the same progression and the same end-game without fail. Or the small events like "Volge Raider Raid" that all progress in the same basic mannerism and while sure the events weren't set in stone every time, the cycle only served to make the "Living World" claims look cheap and egotistical. I truly fear that if this may happen with Destiny. Weapons: This is always a killer. Weapons can make or break a game, depending on how they're built. Often the stats of a weapon don't vary, and nor do the schematics, leaving only a different paint job or skin on it. Destiny has already shown stats wont be an issue since the guns with have their own skill tree style upgrade system, but that leaves me to worry if when you pick something up, will it be a visible change? Personally I hate grabbing another tool to destroy things with and having it look exactly like the previous one I had. Let's say I have a rifle of one type, and I pick up one of the same type with better stats, but it looks the same, with only a variety of color schemes as a difference. I'm always bothered by that, while its purely cosmetic, I feel like with such a large scale project something like this shouldnt happen, and if it does I'd feel like it would make the designers come off as a tad lazy, or un-creative. Customization: I can only say I hope that 'Custom' character appearance isn't limited to Gender, Race, Body dimensions (Height, Weight, Width) and armor color configurations, or in the case that you can change your Guardians facial features and hair, that it will with be pointless due to always having a helmet on, like with Skyrim or games like it.
