What is the Vanguard?

I have a new theory. Maybe it's a Vanguard.
From what I can gather, it sounds like the Vanguards are some sort of recon for planets. Hence the "Awaiting reports from Vanguard" message we see from the "Welcome to the Frontier" hub.
Also, those Vanguards could be the small orbs that you see in the first picture of the Warlock shown here.

I think these two nailed it, but add your thoughts. The Vanguard vaguely reminds me of a Forerunner Catalog.

1 Replies in this Sub-ThreadI think Vanguard is a position to be appointed to because in one of the mailsacks they said seasoned Vanguards will still have fun with new players or players that just don't have enough time to invest in the game. I think the Vanguard they are talking about in the Frontier is a person of that position who is on the specific planet gathering info.

I think it's just the forward rank of guardians who have already traveled to said exotic planets.
