Speculation: Why Did Bungie Go With Three For Fireteams?

Yeah, so I'm curious what the community thinks about why Bungie decided to go with three as the max number for a fireteam? Many of us have been conditioned by games such as Halo to four-man fire teams. One obvious answer is that it matches the number of classes available...although it is not confirmed there won't be more classes. However, it can be pointed out that this is exactly how Bungie has presented the fireteam thus far in The Law of Jungle vid and their E3 demo. Do you think the reason might be symbolic? I don't think this would be a complete explanation but are certainly many forms of literature and media that play of the idea a trinity as being the perfect number to fight evil. The Matrix is the first thing the comes to my mind. From a thematic standpoint, I kind of like the idea of a three man fireteam. Feels legendary to me... What I think about it from an operational standpoint? It could work but I think it would be best to understand how the game fully operates before passing judgment on whether the fireteam size will work or not. So just to be clear...this post is for people who have thoughts on why Bungie went this direction. I'd be particularly interested in hearing some ideas from people with military experience.

  • Maybe because the three classes are well balanced together and they for the ideal team. Possibly of there was a fourth class it would have been a four man fire team.

  • It's because 3 people looks better than 4 people when they stand next to eachother and pose.

    • I think it's because me and my two cousins will create a time machine in the future, and we're the ones pulling the strings, just so we can have a fireteam with the three of us. Or I could be crazy.

      • Perhaps they just looked back at the halo game data they have been collecting for years and found that 95% of all parties formed were 3 people or fewer. Or that is the best way to dynamically group individuals is into groups of three: (2) + (1) or (1)+(1)+(1). I would bet most of the "groups" entering into matchmaking were one individual or just two people.

        • The CEO stated in E3 interviews it was a Designer choice. Leads me to believe the fights are going to be restrictive to a certain amount of enemies (Odd, considering PS4 had that test demo of 1 million moving objects at once.. or something like that). The other thought is that Private Zones are so narrow that only 3 people can effectively fight in the spaces provided.

        • i think it is a good idea, we could coordinate better, and it will be less of a cluster -blam!- in the game, i also believe the three classes really complement each other well, the hunter stands back the Titan rushes in and the Warlock takes out any straggler and together they can really crowed control any situation
a trinity as being the perfect number to fight evil. The Matrix is the first thing the comes to my mind.
lol what about the holy holy trinity(im an atheist) or the three musketeers or the three little pigs, or the three ghosts of Christmas past present and future, the three fates, Cerberus the three headed dog, and to be honest i don't attest to the existence of the sequels lol. Nah im joking i love the matrix, i was just trying to emulate the internet for a sec

          • I think they just wanted to showcase each class in the demo. I would think 6-8 if us could go on a mission together. But if it 3 man fire teams ill be alright with that.

          • I hated playing campaign with 4 people in any halo, it all went too fast and it was more about stealing kills than helping the team. I can hardly see 2 people as a "team", so it must be bigger. 3 is the number.

          • Three is large enough to take down the fallen and small enough to sneak past an army with no confusion

          • The demos so far has had 3-man fire teams, but it seems that the limit is 6. • After further speculation i think its a good number because if you had a team of four or more the game might be too simple and your personal contribution and feeling of badassitude might thus be lessened. Overall I definitely trust bungie to do the absolute best thing for their game. Also wolfpack is three people (as in the trailer) and Bungie LOVES the number 3.

              • Probably supports the story. Think about it. 3 classes, 3 races, 3 fire team slots.

              • Well given that none of us have experiences Destiny yet, it's probably more difficult for us to comprehend WHY it was made. It's not a good thing or a bad thing, things change. We're just looking at trees when there is a whole forest in front of us. Over time I'm sure it will be made more clear.

If you look around through destiny stuff 3 is a recurring number. Ex: Seven seraph logo has three.. whatevers. FWC logo has three main colors/the way the f is set up dead orbit symbol center thing has three lines under it Monarchy symbol has three lines in it Destiny logo has three sides Three classes The logo's probably represent the size of the fireteam, though. Edit: other reasons: Three forms a triangle, something strong and hard to break.

There's numerous benefits to splitting up larger player groups into groups of three, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

                      • In every Halo game, 4 player co-op made the game far too easy. You would roll through every encounter and could finish missions in a fraction of the solo time. In my opinion, 3 is probably a good number for story missions. Not only does it make it more more tense and challenging, it also means Bungie doesn't have to throw as many enemies at you at once...reducing the strain on AI and network connection.
