Because the Halo:Reach file tagging system had a minimum of 3 character tag. No, seriously - the forum's base code is more like the file share of Halo: Reach than it is a forum. It had to be to get both the flexibility and performance we desired.

  • Thanks for the answer. I figured there was some technical reason behind it and wasn't just arbitrary. Your statement about flexibilty and performance makes me curious. I like to understand things, even though I have no more than an slightly educated layman's understanding of webpage design. It might also require an explanation too complicated for a forum post, but how does it give you more flexibility with sufficient performance?

  • The limit isn't related to performance, but the usage of the Reach file system as design template is. That system had a proven scalability and the tagging design is similar to our goals for this forum system, so we inherited some of the design choices and felt no need to change them. Hence, our minimum tag length is three simply because that's what it was in Halo: Reach and we saw no reason to change that limit.

  • It only sucks if you try to create a message for Urk without using a 'message' link and use the Conversation's [+] method...

Haha. Sorry I didn't mean to make it sound like the flexibility and performance question was about the tags. It was really about why you have more flexibility with a forum based on the Reach template rather than a traditional forum template, but I think you covered that too. On tags, A big part of my job is working with faiirly flexible CRM software system and we're about ready to go through a much needed overhaul of our integrated ERP. So, I understand the reason why you would keep tags the same based on a previous template.
