I find this quite interesting, particularly all the backlash and support this woman's videos have had.
In this video she talks about what she feels is the objectification of women in games by making them "objects to be won".
She also seems to think that having women appear in some respects "desirable" to men is also sexist. But at the same time, we have games like GOW which glorify male steryotypes. In video games, there is always some fantasy or disbelief that is added to characters and people to make them appealing and more interesting. I certainly think she has some good points but I also think she is a little too radical. She called remakes of classic games with these tropes in them ""regressive crap".
What are your thoughts on this?

Did they add the comments back to the video? I remember watching the carnage happen on that video when it was first put up. Twas great fun. But yeah, this woman really infuriated me when she started talking about Princess Zelda in Ocarina of Time. "When she turns back into the stereotypical princess she's captured in five minutes and can't save herself." Ganondorf wasn't just going to let her go when he figured out she was the princess so he's obviously going to capture her, and why does she expect her to break out of crystal magic to save herself? Because she's a woman she should be able to?

What I find is funny is that in most roleplaying games today, you can choose your gender and be a total female badass.

So Sarks finally made her bullshit video? About two months over due. My only question is what she spent the rest of that funding money on.

Edited by What Up Essay: 3/12/2013 9:19:36 PMFeminist discussions are okay and all, and is understandable to be striving for equal treatment, but there is one claim that infuriates me. She used the claim as well: women are as capable as men [with regards to (psychical) strength]. Not only do they skip the argumentation for that claim, the very opposite is as clear as the blue sky. Biologically there's an undeniable difference in the ability to gain physical strength (mostly dictated by the testosteron hormone). A male is able to grow more muscles mass (in a natural way) than females, because the female body includes less testosteron. It's nature's contingency. In a way, it's a waste of energy to counter pre-determined facts.

I really don't think people take her seriously. Right?

Man I really hate Anita Sarkeesian. Can't believe Bungie actually invited her (of all the people in the world) to give a talk at the studio.

Edited by Hoggs Bison: 3/12/2013 8:22:35 PMIf the video game is ever going to mature into a medium with any sort of real meaning - which it certainly can - then its creators and consumers will have to first realize how pathetically backwards gaming culture is, and then take steps to correct it. Rather than attempting to integrate itself, an industry that was kept out of the mainstream now delights in perpetuating its alternate reality, which is stunting the growth of of the medium itself. I can't help but attribute some (but not most) of this immaturity to the fact that many Real Gamers (tm) are, literally, kids. It's not particularly reassuring, except on a technical level I guess, that many game creators were always gamers to begin with.

She should talk about Bayonetta. Man, that game is so over-the-top with sexuality and ass kicking, it's insane. Pic is the cover art. This woman has auctioned her tears about abuse all over the internet for financial profit. Take what she says with a grain of salt. Extremism/Radicalism sells, and that's what she's going for, and I would bet money that because the more extreme her claims get, the more rich and famous she becomes, that she is getting caught up with her status, and probably believes that no such pressures are put on men. For example, to have a well-paying job, nice car, etc.

It is certainly true that video games do tend to have a disparity of strong female role models (although this trend is rapidly fading), but as for the whole attractiveness thing? I've never seen an unattractive male hero in a game that I can think of, and there is no criticism for that.

I don't give half of a quarter of an eighth of a -blam!- about this.
