Mute anyone who creates them. You are free to mute anyone you want. Eventually we should probably allow you to mute tags. Ex: religion or politics. Tags like #funny, #gaming and #technology don't seem to have a lot of controversial threads. You guys have the power to correct the community. Hiding and muting can make a big difference.

So if you're giving us the power to moderate your website? What in the world are you guys going to do? Also what happened to you have no rights play nice?

Edited by DocSmurf: 1/27/2013 6:56:13 PMReally stosh, as if giving community members the ability to cut themselves of from other community members based on one idea wasn't bad enough now you want to give them the ability to silence entire tags.... When did you suddenly let go of render unto Cesar on your own domain. If you or any other Bungie member really believes a tag needs silencing then reinstate previous rules or give that power to the ninjas.

Edited by ash55: 1/27/2013 9:05:39 PM(Speaking for myself only)
If you or any other Bungie member really believes a tag needs silencing then reinstate previous rules or give that power to the ninjas.
Providing a "mute tag" option isn't necessarily an acknowledgement that certain tags need silencing from the forum as a whole. It's just an acknowledgement that some may wish to make use of such a feature, for whatever reason. So a "mute tag" option would just be another layer of personalisation. Everyone has a different idea of what they wish to see, which I assume is the point of this site update. Users get the tools to find their favourite threads, while avoiding their least favourite, and so controversial threads cease to be a concern (unless you want to post in them that is - to each their own) I hope a solution where everyone is happy can be achieved.

A far enough point. I'm just saying the idea of a community is to try and exist together and have constructive discussion, which i have seen plenty of since the beta dropped. I just don't understand why a system designed to bring together would provide so many ways to "avoid" the views of other members of the community. i just view the hide feature as counter productive.

You're going to have a fragmented community no matter what IMO. "Floodians"? Enough said. And it was something that those people enjoyed, it brought them together in a sense. People don't have the same tastes, and not everyone gets along like one big happy family. To be honest (this may just be me) but I actually think this update has united people rather than cut them off from eachother. I think that's partly why people are so upset. You wouldn't normally see such ridiculous threads on the old site so long as you steer clear of the Flood. Now, I see a lot of threads I wouldn't have otherwise, due to the All-Topics button. The groups also have options for public threads which helps to tie the whole site together. But I guess it depends on how you browse the site. You don't have to avoid any threads or hide stuff you don't wish to see. However, then you run the risk of seeing stuff you'd rather not. It's up to you whether you want a very constricted version of B.net or one with the floodgates blown open.

Ah, but that's the point - in any community, there is a set of users who basically only want to hear themselves and those they agree with. People like you want to see the discussion, but not everyone is like you. So, what the hide/mute system does is to allow those users to create their echo chamber, and it helps isolate the "anybody who doesn't agree with me needs to die" type of people, where the rest of us can having interesting discussions.

Is there anyway to improve this feature? Like when I mute a user it hides their names when viewing the threads from the forum? And why not permanently hide them? Why do we have an option to show the posts if the user is muted?
-
You have the option to view because of the difference between a ban and mute. A ban is permanent, you can't ever see the content again, even if the user is unbanned. Hide/mute can be removed.

It is hard to mute someone when you lurk. I often come here when i am at school during lunch or before my programming class. The problem is that i use bungie.net domain ip address to access the website though the school filter; therefore i cannot log into my account. I may move to another forum or abandon all online communities because they are filled with vile hatred towards peoples opinions on religion and politics.
-
Users and topics with enough mutes will be globally hidden. You could also ignore #offtopic and go directly to tags that don't have much controversial content like #gaming or #bacon. You don't have to go to all or #offtopic.

I've been to gaming a couple times but it isnt the same. I was on "The Flood" lurking for 4+ hours a day, because of the political debates i have only been to this whole website 4 times in the past 2 weeks. If i wanted a faming only type forum with a similar style to the newest form of bungie.next i would go to reddit. I miss the "girl" threads, people asking for help on homework, an occasional halo 4 or Battlefield thread. People of the flood tended to range from ridiculous people to the kindest of hearts, with the latest update everyone i feel has been hostile and fearful of the ease of impersonation. My main problem is that lurking is no longer an option here and to make the problem worse auto sign in is broken and half the time doesn't work with all 4 of my linked accounts. -can you fix the dark theme for mobile? The screen flashes black whenever scrolling through threads on safari ios6 If there are no rules then why have moderators? Why even have a forum? If i wanted garbage of an off topic for i would go to places that shouldn't be spoken of.
-
A bunch of those topics just got globally ignored by our community. Keep on hiding. If you log out you'll see they are hidden.

There are still rules. http://www.bungie.net/en-US/View/bungie/conduct

the amount/effect of the rules pales in comparison to the previous itteration. Why bungie changed their website to this wasteland of inadmissible filth makes me question if my dream of working for bungie should be my dream. They seem like okay people but their lack of wanting to have responsibility over the forum astonishes me. I came to bungie.net and was welcome to a well kept forum with rules that allow mature discussion of political problems but not the discussion of politics itself. Everyone tells me that i should mute users that i see post these threads, the problem with that idea is that they may post a thread unrelated to politics/religion that i can relate to that if they had been muted i would not have been able to see. I feel like i see more mature discussion of things on waypoint that here now. ~cringes~

The community is what you make it. And the previous state of affairs was impossible - 20 or 30 moderators against a few million users? No. This way, everybody gets the forum they want - they have the tools to define their own view.
-
If you don't want to see the thread but don't have a problem with the OP then just hide the thread. Users are more capable of 'moderating' the forum to their liking than the moderators trying to enforce a universal standard. The moderators (even between themselves) and users disagreed all the time about where the boundaries of the rules were.

When i did that the first day forum sections were baxk almost my whole first page was hidden.
