Here's an idea to throw around

Well, there's always people repeating topics in the Underground, and that's understandable, seeing that a lot of these people are new And we all hear peoples cries for a search function, much like how the old Bungie.net worked, as well as a bunch of other sites But I think that if you include the search function, it, like The Chief in Halo 2, should have some new "tools" One of these, which is a pretty brilliant idea if you ask me, is that when you make a thread, the preview button acts more than just seeing how the result will be when posted. The preview button now acts as a search button, and will alert the user if the topic has been posted before or recently, showing the actual day on it's last occurrence and the page number it's currently on at the time of posting For example, I'll use a topic with the base theme of "Favorite Red Versus Blue Quote" Now, users might get creative and make the subject "Famous attributions from the popular web series about SPARTAN's in Blood Gulch"; I used that example knowing that no one would probably ever do that, but you get the idea So, what can Bungie.net do to get around this problem? Google, in my opinion, is the best web search tool available online, and it's because they have a way with words in such an effective way So the point of this is really asking the question: Could you make something like this happen? Can you make it so, when you hit the preview button, it'll tell you if your topic, or something similar to it, has been posted lately, so as to tone down the "already been talked about buddy" responses that that person will likely get from the other, been-here-for-a-while, Bungie.net users. Is it possible for Bungie to work with Google, or actually MSN now that I think about it, to make the preview serve a dual purpose? This is something that I don't think has ever been done, on any forum that I've seen myself Some people, which is inevitable basically, will continue to post things, even if they know that it's been posted before. But I'm pretty sure that the majority of the people who post repeated topics had no idea that BillyBob (example) posted the same thing last Tuesday. I mean, everytime you see a repeated topic, look at the date that that user joined Bungie.net, and it's no coincidence that these people are all new. It's all in the theme of suggestion of course, but I think you can easily see the benefits of having something like this being implemented into the forums. And hey, Bungie can do anything, so why not mess around with this idea and see if it sticks? Thanks everybody; and I mean this: Keep up the good work Bungie; you guys are doing some really great things for the gaming world [Edited on 5/19/2004 8:00:22 PM]

  • i think this makes a lot of sense, it would certainly make sure people knew what they were talking aobut, i would've thought something like this might have happened already... and this has undoubtedly been mentioned before so feel free to shoot me in the head...

  • I was just thinking about the same thing the other day, in fact. It would be great to add it to the 'post' button too. So if you post a topic the same as before, it won't let you post it but will bring up search options that matched your topic. This way, so that people don't just hit 'post' instead of preview (the only time I use preview is for long posts) it makes sure repeated topics aren't always done.

  •
Posted by: goweb
It would simply check original thred titles. Just like the old search function, 'cept with a different output.
That would still take quite a while.
Yup...I don't think this idea is feasible. Too much work to get the feature online and it work tax the system far too much.

A Reverse Search tool. ;D It records what every person types in the Search each month for a website and tallies the numbers. Internet marketers pay good money for this tool because it allows them to see how many people are searching for what they're selling online, and it allows them to see what phrases/words they need to include on their website to attract the people that type for their particular phrase. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, or I'm not explaining it right, I apologize, and Ile move right on to what it's got to do with Bungie. With this Reverse Search tool, Bungie can record what everyone types in the Search, and will be able to make this list that MakaVeli4LIfe1 was talking about, according to what people type in the Search. For example.. I want to look up "Chapter Founders". Someone else types in "Chapter Funders". They would have gotten no results because they mispelled it. But with the tool, Bungie could redirect the mispeller to the same link because they knew what the person was trying to type in. Whud'ya think? ;D

  • Considering I have about 10 or so windows open up between the septagon and the underground right now, I would have about 10 pop ups. I would then have to come over there, drag you here, and make you close all of those pop ups. Please no pop ups. Its good to not get up until 1:30 PM. I love having the day off...

  • I don't like the popup thing either. It would just be annoying. The thing about the organization would be nice, but you know it would just lead to more of the problem we have between the Septagon and Undergroung: misplaced posts. It would be hell on the Mods.

How about a mandatory Forum FAQ? I'm betting new members are as likely to read the forum FAQs that are in place as much as I read the instructions when I put together Legos as a kid. What about having an FAQ (complete with witty comments about the possibility of being flamed if they ignore it) that (I HATE to suggest this) pops up in a new window and won't/can't be closed until it's been read? There are ways around that, too, I know. Just a thought. [Edited on 5/20/2004 9:48:34 PM]

  • What we need to do is have a multi threaded forum. Like you open up the underground, and about 5 threads come up, leading to: Halo 2 Halo Marathon Myth Oni then you click one of those, and it opens up another set of threads reading like it is now, but only with topics related to it. then for the Septagon have it set up like this: The septagon \ Site Improvements (glitches/errors) Questions/Comments Other (but still relating to improvement of the site) etc. etc. for the maw. I think that would solve alot of the spaming problems, people could see what has already been posted on Halo 2 specifically so they dont post on the same topic.

  •
Posted by: goweb That would definitely slow the forum down - imagine all those database requests, and checking every single row.
It would simply check original thred titles. Just like the old search function, 'cept with a different output.

  • I like the idea, but if people weren't allowed to talk about old things anymore, then what would we talk about? Creative new topics are rare these days, and a perfect forum is almost impossible.

  • And hey, maybe to add a little "Bungie comedy" to it, if a repeated topic is simply submitted without a preview, a screen will pop-up to say "Warning: This has been talked about. We at Bungie are not responsible for the hurtful responses that you will most definitely receive as a result by the submission of this thread" It can all be done, just takes a little work is all :)

  • Yeah, this would be difficult to do. If it can be done, it'd be great. The main problem I see is that idiots won't use it. Oh well. They deserve a good flaming in that case. - Reiginko
