• The frame rate in halo 3 needs adressing, it's very poor and keeps glitching out of 30FPS.

 • About the whole widescreen issue, I'm alright with it being a fix for a good FOV. But damn, I still HATE IT. With the processing power and the bandwidth of the graphics memory that 2 frame buffer is insignificant. The backgrounds are plain and HDR has been around for 3 years (Sierra dubbed it with HL2) - c'mon now. I plopped out 1100 for my HDTV to have that wasted space? Give us the f'ed up field of view, make us feel more special than those with SDTV's for god's sake at least give us a choice.

 • Thanks for the update! :D My ONE questions is: Are you guys going to put Team Hardcore back on there, or anything with a starting Battle Rifle? MLGPro has already made the game types, and I think it would be a GREAT idea if you guys put this back into Halo 3! :D PLEASE reply back soon, thanks.

 • i love looking through these posts and seeing things people say. OMG i can't search for custom games...yes, features get dropped from games all the time before release. calmmm downn. you were never promised anything, Bungie made a point of saying that any features could be changed or removed before release. OMG SOOOOO many of us are having disc read errors.....ok, lets say 1000 are. 1000 out of..what 2 mil sales? .05% come on! near perfection. OMG your explanation of 640p SUXX...you want an explanation, you get one, and your STILL not happy. OMG GoW and Bioshock look SOOOO better....then go play them. think we want to hear you whine? Bungie, you made a solid game, and I love the multiplay. My only request is a social playlist for infection games.

 •
When you split a 16:9 screen in half you get two 32:9 pictures. Anyone who played halo 2 can tell you the FOV is too wide, and you also can't see someone trying to get the jump on you from above. Equally so, the side to side ratio would be 8:9, taller than it is wide, meaning the FOV isn't wide enough to see to your sides....by squeezing the viewport into a more aestetically pleasing ratio, it actually improves the gaming experience. You aren't losing anything here, believe me. It has nothing to do with 640p or the frame rate or anything technical. Bungie was giving us the best FOV possible by doing this.
The black bars on either side are a bummer. It would be really nice if, at least in Campaign, you could have a full-width split screen. Really, the only good answer is for everyone to have their own 50" HDTV, Xbox 360, and copy of Halo 3 Legendary. Split screen play is an ugly solution no matter how you look at it. Even so, the current solution feels like a problem when you first see it. And, even after you get used to it, if you make the mistake of putting Gears of War back in your Xbox the black bars in Halo 3 bum you out all over again. [Edited on 10.01.2007 8:59 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Major_Bowman Listen, neanderthal, because I'm only going to say this once: our discs are not scratched. How HARD is it for you to understand? I mean, I know that in this day of technological wizardry anyone with less than a million brain cells can scratch out a living, but that is no excuse for your acute inability to read. The DRE problem goes BEYOND cosmetic/physical defects. It's so bad that it's utterly annihilating something inside the 360, making it so that select people can't even play games with it anymore. As for what we expect them to do? We expect them to at least acknowledge that there is an error in compatibility. So far: nothing. So YOU be quiet. YOU shut up. Meanwhile, myself and the other individuals who have this problem will try and coerce Bungie into getting off their mountains of money and address their community like we rightfully deserve.
ok you know how to type an a(^(*&^( message but stop complaining if you cant see that they are working hard as they can personaly i think microsoft is trying to fix your problems and bungie is doing all in their power to keep people gamming so stop being a little nerdy whimp and be a man yes mine is haveing the same problem but patcience is a vertu and maybe if you learn it. then you can finnaly think clearly.

 • Just one thing to mention :neutral mode: When you Americans mention time please don't forget that the USA are not the only country in the world and not the only country to play Halo 3! Between 5pm and 9pm just means nothing to a lot of people, and even in the USA (4 time zones!), please just use the international UTC+x Other than that good game to all Halo 3 citizens!

 •
Posted by: VooDAtari ] I really believe Halo 3 total polygons on screen is as much 2x the number we found in Halo 2. And in fact, the so talked "huge view distance" in Halo 3, is mostly made by using fake 2d backgrounds. On the other hand even Shadow of the Colossus have MUCH higher and REAL view distance. Hey dudes, is time to make Halo 3. Any suggestions? Yeah...I found a way to build the entire game in two weeks and waste two years doing nothing Really? Sure man, look : C:\>MAKE HALO2.MAKEFILE TARGET=XBOX360
Wow, man. You've really impressed everybody *please note sarcasm before reading further*. Personally, and I'm sure many agree with me, I think Halo 3 looks better than Halo 2. By a long shot. And Shadow of the Colossus looks like a pile of dog crap compared to even Halo 2. Halo 3 looks great, plays great, and has a good story. Congratulations on your ability to count whatever it is your saying you've counted, but we don't care, we're not impressed, and your annoying as hell. Stop posting. • Well now that we've all read what the man who can't spell retard right has to say, why don't we all just shut up about the problems we've been having. You all sound like a bunch of emos here. If this is such a big issue that you need to be broadcasting to the world, switch to something else. Some other console, some other game (I hate to say it because there isn't going to be anything better), but switch to something so we don't have to listen to you. You'll wonder why I keep coming back to read what you have to say. It's because I respect Bungie's ability to entertain millions of people around the world, and choose not to search out the four or five flaws in their games so I can ramble on and make people notice me. But I'll be damned if I won't stand up for them. The gist of it is shut up about your problems, nobody cares. Cheers; -The Wise Man [Edited on 10.01.2007 1:39 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Agrestial Everybody is really whining HARD about their disc read errors... WHAT YOU GUYS HAVE TO REALIZE IS THAT THIS IS NOT BUNGIE'S FAULT. Any error with the discs happened at the manufacturer. If it's not the disc, it's the console; you know, the 33% failure-rate console. If it was a software problem, or a patchable problem, all of the game discs would have it, wouldn't they? You've been whining for days about the DRE, but that's the first time you actually thought it through, isn't it? So go and moan and cry to Microsoft, not Bungie. Bungie is not abandoning their fans or burning any bridges. Now shut up and stop embarrassing the rest of us. You're making us look like idiots.
YOU DONT NEED ANY HELP LOOKING LIKE AN IDIOT. BUNGIE IS OWNED AND SUPPORTED DIRECTLY BY MICROSOFT RTARD EVEN THEIR SUPPORT SITE CLEARLY INDICATES THAT ALL SUPPORT ISSUES GO THROUGH MICROSOFT VIA XBOX.COM AND IT IS MICROSOFT THAT WILL ISSUE A PATCH AND PRESS RELEASE REGARDING THE DRE ERRORS WITH MULTIPLE TRIED COPIES OF UNDAMAGED HALO3 GAMES THAT SCREW UP OUR SYSTEMS. GO PLAY HALO AND STOP WASTING OUR TIME WITH YOUR RTARDED RHETORIC

 •
Posted by: appleguru but presumably it has to do with performance (And that really comes down to poor optimization (more likely), or the fact that they're rendering so many damn polygons on the screen at a given time (particularly in wide open spaces. • So.. The xbox 360 has 2 frame buffers, each of which renders video at 1152x640. A framebuffer holds the color value of every pixel to be displayed. Normally, the 360 would take values from each buffer and merge them together to create a higher resolution image (Though, assuming these ARE the actual maximums for the frame buffer, the xbox 360 can only really do a native 1920x768 (Or 1280x1152; 1474560 pixels max) image.... 1920x1080 has some made up data somewhere; 720p fits.) Halo 3 uses each framebuffer INDEPENDENTLY to store high dynamic range lighting values in one and low dynamic range lighting values in the other, presumably averaging the two values for each pixel address space to get a final output value for the screen. Why in the hell they don't calculate this average BEFORE putting the values into the framebuffer (Thus allowing maximum resolution) is beyond me, but presumably it has to do with performance (And that really comes down to poor optimization (more likely), or the fact that they're rendering so many damn polygons on the screen at a given time (particularly in wide open spaces. Either way though, bungie is really just being lazy and relying on the fact that the 360 has a REALLY good hardware scaler (ANA, HANA for the HDMI consoles) that scales in very high quality to almost any resolution without taxing the GPU/CPU at all.

 •
Posted by: AblativeMeatshld
Posted by: whatev 13 lukems ... why can't I search for a custom game?? This question needs to be addressed. either in the next update, or the next podcast.
I swear to god people, you're giving me grey hairs... They have already addressed this issue. It was planned, but it didn't work out. It's not coming. The game pwns without it. Enjoy the pile of happyness that is Halo 3.
The game pwns yes, but I already played the -blam!- out of halo2. The matchmaking play in 3 is not much different, and I'm already bored. I understand that a bungie employee made a coment in a forum . . . that is not exactly a press release. Sorry. Even if Bungie couldn't figure out how to implement something that most other video games did (including the game the beta was bundled with), the issue still needs to be addressed publicly. I just want the issue addressed. The least they could do is add a social playlist caled bungie faveorites, with wierd custom gametypes. Then at least people who want to play custom games could aggregate a party there relatively easily. Here's the thing: Rocket Race is a crapload of fun ... and I want to play it regularly. Question for the next podcast: What are you at bungie going to do to cater to fans who want to play custom game variants regularly, seeing as how the search wasn't implemented? • I'd be willing to overlook the smarmy tone of this post, even though it's targeted at people who shelled out $60+ dollars for your game, if it weren't for the fact that the explanation about why H3 is not HD is just plain wrong. If you had just admitted that the resolution was a little off and that this resolution was chosen to provide a smoother framerate at a given image quality, at least that would make some sense. "In fact, you could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers – both of which render at 1152x640 pixels." No, the only way you could argue that is if you didn't know what the hell you were talking about. By using another FB for the HDR values and combining before display, you are effectively increasing the available color depth to ensure that low-range details don't get washed out by the bright, shiny lights. This doesn't affect the image resolution in any way. If you had used 4 buffers to store color information, the resolution would not automagically be 4608x640 or 1152x2640, or whatever other crazy value you pull out of your ass that's 4x the original resolution. Check with your technical staff before you post blatantly wrong information publicly. It only makes you look stupid. "In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it’s practically impossible to discern the difference." Well, duh. Why would you expect to see a difference? It's the same 640 pixels, just re-sampled to display at 720. The only differences you would see are artifacts of interpolation, not because of increased resolution. If you scaled up to 115200x64000 pixels, it would (assuming the scaler works correctly) look identical in every way to 1152x640, because it's still the same 640 pixels! You haven't increased the resolution to the value it's scaled up to. Again, try thinking a little before offering a ridiculous claim to the public. What you really want to compare are the native 1152x640 image and a *native* 1280x720 image. But, sadly, you can't do that because your game doesn't run natively at 1280x720. Sorry about that. If you could do that, see the difference for yourself, and then get back to us with a patch that will let us all play at HD resolution, I'm sure we would all be very pleased.

 • lukems ... why can't I search for a custom game?? This question needs to be addressed. either in the next update, or the next podcast. I know yocan see the giant threads on bnet regarding the issue. I just want an official statement. Just want to know if Forge will no longer be useless or if I should just start looking forward to COD4. Love the game, single and multiplayer. Just want what you promised, a way to play rocket race without waiting for twenty minutes to get a party together. PLEASE!!

 • Re: You owe me 80p Wow, the Bungie rep that wrote that post has quite an elitist attitude and a few *facts* are intentionally misleading. For the record I do believe that rendering Halo 3 in 1152x640 is *not* a disaster, but the response from Bungie *is*. Bungie:
Naturally it’s more complicated than that. In fact, you could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers – both of which render at 1152x640 pixels.
So does that mean that video cards that use 16x anti-aliasing can claim 16x the final resolution of the image? Of course NOT. So therefore since the final unscaled result for HALO 3 is still 1152x640 in resolution no matter what other frame buffers are used in its rendering it's still 640 pixels of vertical information. "1280 pixels of vertical resolution" -- NOT! I call shenanigans on that one. Bungie:
In fact, if you do a comparison shot between the native 1152x640 image and the scaled 1280x720, it’s practically impossible to discern the difference.
No kidding sherlock, scaling up a lower resolution picture *should* result in a picture that's practically the same. Notice how Bungie did not say that they could not discern a difference in a frame rendered NATIVELY in 1280x720 vs. one rendered natively in 1152x640. Also, scaling an image up to a non integer multiple is *never* as sharp as 1:1 pixel mapping. I'd like to know how many Bungie graphics designers are willing to work on screens with a native resolution of 1280x720 using video information scaled up from 1152x640? How many would rather the image be left as 1152x640 with 1:1 pixel mapping in the middle of the 1280x720 screen? As I've said before, I don't think that rendering at a resolution of 1152x640 then scaling up to 1280x720 or 1920x1080 is that big of an issue for my enjoyment of Halo 3. The "tinfoil hats" did over-react, but having an OFFICIAL statement from Bungie address these valid (although minor) complaints with such a demeaning attitude and with so much PR truthiness and hand waving has disappointed me even more. I expected a straight forward, technically accurate and professional response from Bungie.
