Homework threads, a line in the sand

Before you start, I'm just going to say that Homework threads should not be banned. Why are Homework threads allowed on The Flood in the current state that they're always made? What I mean is, I understand that helping threads are good, but no one ever helps the OP in Homework threads. They just do the homework for the OP and offer no way of having the knowledge go through. They'll never learn if they don't do it themselves and no one on The Flood ever nudges the OP in the right direction so he can solve it on his own. All Homework threads I've seen have been Math questions where the OP just gets the answer and learns nothing from the experience. The way they're going, Homework threads aren't help threads, they're "Do the work for me" threads which doesn't help anyone and ultimately hinders the OP later. Once again, help threads are good, but why are Homework threads allowed in the current state they're in? [Edited on 01.06.2013 1:36 PM PST]

 • We really are getting bored. OT: I see your point. The OP is practically cheating.

 • As a tutor at my University's Math Center, I most certainetly don't just do the homework for any Math related threads I see. I treat the floodians like I do anyone who visits the Math Center for help.

 • I'm going to say two things here. First, if they don't get the problem solved here, they either aren't going to do it or find the answers somewhere else. Second, and to me most important, during my high school and college careers, I learned more about how to complete a problem when I knew the answers. It is so much more easy to see how a problem is to be solved when you see it solved step by step and can follow the work. Most text books don't do this unfortunately, and most professors don't either. I got through college because I had people who I could rely on to show me the answer, and with that out of the way, I could dedicate my time to figuring out WHY and not worry about wasting my time with dead ends. So yes, I will help people and I will provide them answers, because it DOES help.

 • Your argument says that we're not helping OP enough when he asks for help. My argument says that OP needs to find the answers and learn how in School, not here.

 • To be fair, OPs asking for help and getting an answer is all they need. If someone is kind enough to explain the process then they will, otherwise it's up to the OP to figure it out. I see no reason why the rules need to be adjusted because of this.

 • I agree with you that it's incredibly lazy and won't help the OP one bit come test time, SAT time, future time, etc. But the OP doesn't have an answer, The Flood gives them the answer, and thus they've been helped because they now have the thing they were asking for. Therefore it's a help thread. Also, teaching someone over the internet on an internet forum filled with people who are just going to blurt out the answer anyway is very hard. Walking someone through the problem step-by-step, having them do parts of it on their own, making sure they get it, and other things any good tutor or teacher would do is next to impossible on The Flood, and most OPs won't take it to PMs to take the time to learn it. If the OPs wanted to actually learn, they'd use Khan Academy or something similar.
Posted by: Gaara444 I guess we're at odds on this, cause I look at the immediate help as a hindrance since the Op still won't figure out how to solve the problem on his own.
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55 But they are helping the OP by doing the OP's homework (or part of it) for them. That is help. It is not long-term help, but it is help. • Wouldn't that be the OPs choice? Besides, even if such topics are banned here, you won't cause the OP to learn how to solve the problem, but rather force them to another site such as Wolfram Alpha which gives the same result as here.

 •
Posted by: Gaara444 I realize that, but Help threads were made for its namesake, to HELP people. If no one is being helped then what's the point of the thread? No one is helping the OP in these threads, so why is it classified as a Help thread?
Posted by: CrazzySnipe55 The Flood's job is not to educate, it's to abide by the rules and parameters set by the OP so long as the OP is within the rules and parameters set by the Web Team, or to make their own thread that is with those rules and parameters. If someone doesn't want to learn, then they don't want to learn. It's not the moderation team's job to moderate laziness.

They are not helping him learn, they are helping him in finding the answer, even if that means giving the answer to him.

 • I'm not saying Homework threads should be banned. I'm saying that they should be made to offer actual help over what it's currently doing. If Homework threads had discussion where people helped OP out and give him tips so that he could solve the problem by himself then it wouldn't be a problem. It's the fact that half the posts are either smart remarks or just answers to the problem that offer no discussion or help which is what the thread was made for in the first place. Homework threads should not be banned, but right now, they shouldn't be classified as "Help Threads" either.
Posted by: ecartman1214 It's not Bungie's job to make sure members are doing well in school. If anything some threads do not promote discussion then could be locked. But really in the end everybody always says "X threads should be locked/banned" always seem to ignore the fact that moderating is done on a case by case basis. Best advice: Don't post, if you think it should be locked report and move on.
[Edited on 01.06.2013 1:33 PM PST]

If he has a test the next day on the subject, that immediate help will do him no good. • I guess that as its an off-topic forum most things go, I do agree through, most people prefer to reply with half witty comments rather than help the OP - for most I cant help through I would recommend the student room as they are often able to assist from GCSE upto Degree level
