Community elected role?

Before I post this I would just like to say that I'm spitballing. I was discussing this in the following thread and I thought it deserved its own space to talk about it. What if the forums could have an elected community role like how for example ninjas are moderators, DeeJ is the community manager how about a role that is elected from the community when the new game announcement is made? Maybe a member could be elected to interview a member of the development team old/new in relation to there time spent at bungie, the forums or any question they think the community would like to ask or maybe something similar to mail sack that this elected person is allowed to ask one question a week that has to be answered What do you guys think? Too ambitious? No need for something like that - are we content enough as is? As again I'm spitballing if anything what could a community elected role be?

 •
Posted by: Viron Could always create a group now with a solid group of members and see if it carries onto bungie.next? How would members be selected through, what would be the thought process and who would create the group? I also agree with prometheus, the idea would have to be presented to Achronos and see what his opinion of the idea is and wether he thinks it could develop and function - but without any direct line to talk to Achronos how would we contact him with meaning knowing it will it get read?
If Achy doesn't like the idea then he'll ignore the PM.. it's what normally happens I think.

 • Under the current system, I can atleast pretend there is no elitism in mod selection, so I motion against this.

 • Oh I was just hinting at YANW for the sake of hinting at YANW. We would be perfect though :P I assume you're talking about a group not unlike the one squirrel dude set up after his Hall of Fame thread in The Flood a few years back. Didn't exactly work out but the general idea was to have generally trustworthy members annually nominate members for the thread. [Edited on 01.04.2013 2:26 PM PST]

More along the lines of "a group of Joes who have demonstrated their ongoing excellence". I would imagine (and it's my imagination, so of course it seems perfect) that such a group should/would/could always be on the lookout of cliquishness, snobbishness, holier-than-thou examples within their ranks and purge themselves of such members when it is spotted. Especially if the members of that group wanted to maintain any level of value or trust from our hosts.

It could be anyone that Bungie see's fit for the role and they would use their own guidness for picking people.. if it was even to happen,

 •
Posted by: Recon Number 54
Posted by: Bricypoo Voting on Bunie.net can never be official. It is almost impossible to stop ALTs, some people go through great lengths to make sure people think their ALTS are real people. If it was done a different way possibly, but the voting system can never be completely glitch free.
Very good point. But if there were a group with "established and trusted members of the community who have demonstrated consistent helpfulness and positive contributions" a poll/vote in such a group (especially if large enough and invite only) would be far less likely to be exploited or manipulated as a poll on the mains.
Let's be honest with ourselves; that'd just turn into a system in which users would complain that "Mythics get what they want." Not saying that it would be all Mythic members in there, but I believe that is how it would be perceived. Plus, you would have to establish some sort of tangible criteria for the average member to see each group member's merit in being a part of the voting system.
Posted by: Viron As I said I think its better if ninjas/web development where to choose the people that could vote
That at least standardizes it some, but I think it turns a not-bad idea into a concept that is taking away the merit of a community-run system. Maybe if periodically the web team/moderators selected candidates for a vote in an official thread. Every week or month, 8 users are selected based on recent activity and contribution, and the community votes on who they would like to represent the community. The two or three with the most votes would join (as recon suggested) an invite-only group that contains and is run by the "elected" community members. It would be up to this elected team to reach out to both the community and web team/moderators for events and ideas, endorse community involvement opportunities, and continuously prove to the community through participation and acts of transparency. recap/tl;dr: moderators and web team select candidates for periodic voting; this allows a standard of positive behavior to be set for who can be considered. Community votes on new/additional representatives to join the old; this makes sure that it is the community, not the web team, that determines who shares their voice. Thoughts?

 • I've also thought about a community elected role but there are some flaws with it. People discussed this in a thread I made a while ago and the issue with an election would be that it would go off of who is more known. Sometimes the most popular member isn't the right person for the job. I wpuld love to see an election one day though..

I can only think of one group that fits that profile at the moment. That's a pretty good idea though, but there will always be those members who say 'i wanna vote' and 'dis not fair!' ect. Would everyone really want to put up with all that? Actually I guess we already do.. >.>

 • Elected role? So, that means polls? Polls can be fixed with alts and make it unfair. How do you propose how we would elect?
