Halo 4 Legendary Ending (SPOILERS!)

What did you think of this? Did you or did you not approve of them showing some of Chief's face? For a diehard fan, I was actually fairly wowed, I loved it :D [Edited on 01.02.2013 5:58 PM PST]

 • Agreed, to an extent. Imagine if you'd had to spam X to have the Arbiter stab Truth in the back. QTEs can rob a scene of its emotional impact, because it creates an instant barrier between what's happening on-screen and real life. A barrier you have to break down by mashing buttons and in doing so, breaking down the immersion.

 • The fact that I barely noticed the difference, well let's just say worst legendary ending ever. [Edited on 01.06.2013 2:37 PM PST]

 •
Posted by: grey101
Posted by: IonicPaul No creative process in that fight.
1. The point of the QTE was so it wasn't a direct fight 2. Your "creative processes" aren't canon an a cutscene would follow right after so i don't get this statement.
1. Then why even make it that way? Why not just make it a cutscene? That was always the point of a cutscene, anyways: Things that the player couldn't do in normal gameplay, or that were involved extensively with other characters. Why make me press a button when there's only one possibility for what's going to happen? QTE's have always been stupid for this reason. It's just a lame thing. Look, I'd have been fine if it were just a cutscene. At least they'd be honest that it wasn't a boss fight, rather than essentially patronizing me by going "LOOK, YOU DID IT. YOU BEAT THE BAD GUY (by pressing a button so actually a trained gorilla could have done this)." It was just so weak. If they want me to fight, let me fight. If they want me to not have control, take control away. Don't give me a semblance of control when I don't have any.

 •
Posted by: ajw34307 There is no "meaning of the mask", John had always been a fully realised character with a backstory shared by the other Spartans. We have seen his face and had it described in numerous canonical sources for 11 years, there was never any indication that the Chief was anything like Nolan's Batman...
Yes, there is a meaning of the mask. Despite John being fully realized as a character, you know what his motivation was? Winning. A motivation shared by anyone playing the game. He was made to line up with the player, and it worked. Now? I feel like I'm playing a game where I don't have control. The QTE's are HUGE in this regard. "Press LT to do exactly what you are programmed to do." No creative process in that fight. So disappointing. 343 wants to make a glorified movie, not a game where I am the protagonist. That's not Halo to me.

Halo discussion is still allowed here and will always be.So if 343I's direction isn't to your liking why are you posting that in everything instead of just ignoring everything to do with 343I?

 • Showing Johns face was a good thing, I think. It shows to those who have never read the books that he is not just a war machine, but human and that the war has taken its toll on him.

 • John hates and is scared of the flood, he was freaking out without cortana during his stay in the library. I can only assume how much he shat himself walking around the flood infested high charity.

 •
Posted by: grey101
Posted by: Mister Rollback because I would rather the chief be a stoic, hyper-lethal, war machine than whatever the books make him out to be.
Which is extremely childish. I find it funny how people say "This isn't halo" yet 343I is making it more in tune with the haloverse. It annoys the crap out of me how john isn't asking questions about his area like he does in the books. There wasn't much of it in halo 4 but it was a start.
I wouldn't go as far as to call it childish, but it certainly is narrow-minded. Why do people not want John to have a personality? That annoys the crap out of me :/ Is it not boring to have a protagonist who, let's face it, is the gaming worlds' most boring and bland character? I'm glad 343 fleshed him out somewhat. Plus, his cry "Cortana!", when (SPOILER) Cortana died had more emotion then any of his and NOBLE team lines from the previous games combined. Bland characters make bland games. Just be glad Chief wasn't alone in Halo CE/2/3 or that would be boring as hell :/ [Edited on 01.06.2013 8:21 AM PST]

 • Another reason why I hate posting here. Bungie has said from the very beginning that the player was supposed to feel like chief which is why they never showed his face. Watch the halo 3 vidoc they make it clear there. Once again you are citing books don't take precedence over the game. You can keep your characterization of the chief, because I would rather the chief be a stoic, hyper-lethal, war machine than whatever the books make him out to be.

 • We barely saw anything. His eyes and a large area around them were heavily shadowed, like 99% pure darkness. And it was a brief one second glimpse anyways. He's still mostly faceless, just the way I like him.

 •
Posted by: Sliding Ghost I'd at least like to be able to skip right to it... Doesn't really make sense why I have to watch the same ending just to see a new piece. Or better yet, why can't we watch the cutscenes apart from the missions? There really ought to be something like they did with the terminals. A separate place to watch the cutscenes.
Huh? What do you mean? It has always been like that, since CE... Didn't you play the original trilogy or something?
Posted by: ajw34307
Posted by: wcd45 afterall The Chief is supposed to be the player.
Sigh... no he isn't, this line of thinking was abandoned after Halo CE.
No it wasn't. It was always like that, of course he had a back story and characterization since then, but being the Master Chief is what they intended you to feel when you played the game. And to OP: I really loved the way they developed Master Chief as a character in the campaign, making him evolve as a "human" through the campaign was a really nice touch. However I didn't like the detail of showing us his face as much as I thought I would if it happened, I completed the campaign in Heroic at first and I loved the feeling I got when the screen got black. But when I completed it in Legendary and I got to see that part of his face I didn't like it that much. I preferred when it was a mystery. However it doesn't bother me at all, it was ok, I'm just saying that I didn't like it that much, that's all.

 • The face tease was a step in the right direction. Humanizing the Spartans was a big theme throughout Halo 4, one I enjoyed immensely. Seeing more of and learning more about John within the medium of a video game is something I'd like to see. Not only him, but other surviving SII. I hope 343i gives us the cameo most of us hoped for, one day.

Everyone's stuck in a halcyon era that never really existed outside their own rose tinted minds.
A slight change in an existing ending will never constitute a Legendary ending.
Why? It's an additional piece of footage on top of the normal ending unlocked by beating the game on Legendary, it is by definition a 'Legendary ending'. There is literally no other requirement for it to have that title...
I'd at least like to be able to skip right to it...
You can. Or rather, you can skip the first epilogue scene and the credits. You stil have to sit through Didact's speech. [Edited on 01.05.2013 6:49 PM PST]

Doesn't really make sense why I have to watch the same ending just to see a new piece.
This has been the case with every Legendary ending in the series with the exception of CE because the Johnson/Elite scene takes place during the end cutscene. In Halo 3, ODST, Wars and 4 you have to wait until the end.
Or better yet, why can't we watch the cutscenes apart from teh missions? There really ought to be something like they did with the terminals. A separate place to watch the cutscenes.
Agreed, like in Halo Wars where you unlock the cutscenes in the main menu as you progress through the game.
