I used to be a pretty nerdy kid back in high school. I was into playing video games and not sports, not working out, dressing poorly and being awkward and shy around girls. Being hopeless like this of course a bully took notice of me and began to harass me. He would call me names and shove me down and push me around. It was like torture.
Anyway I got tired of his crap so I started working out, flirting with girls, getting into sports, and improving the quality of my life a ton. I began to finally live life and if not for that bully I would still probably a skinny nerd playing video games all day. I am glad that bully entered my life.
I know bullies get a lot of hate in the media when they say "oh they are killing our children" when bullies are just a normal part of life and growing up and facing adversity. So I just wanted to put a positive spin on bullying and how it builds character and toughness.
Posted by: Garem
Posted by: DatDudeBV and I have no sympathy for weak willed people who kill themselves. They are pathetic and selfish.
So if someone suffers through four years of daily physical and psychological torture, then finally snaps, they're weak? Someone who put up with a bully who constantly tormented them for sparse amusement is selfish? You need to rethink your definitions.
If someone lets something happen constantly for four years, I'd place part of the blame on them. They should take the initiative somewhere along the line to try and solve their problem, whether that be getting help from an authority figure or doing something themselves.
Posted by: DatDudeBV of course it is. It was selfish of me to have fun at someone elses expense.
Regardless, suicide isn't selfish. If someone truly wants to die, it would be selfish of others to hold them back.
Posted by: Quest is back
Posted by: darthnilhilus97 So in other words you gave into a dick. Well done OP.
And somehow he feels proud. Weird huh? It's almost like the challenges he faced and conquered built self esteem.
What? No. If he conquered the bully, he wouldn't have fundamentally changed himself because someone picked on him. He would have stood up to the bully, sure, but he would also have stayed true to who he was rather than playing sports just because some guy made him feel inferior for not playing sports. He gave in. Plain and simple. This is all, of course, assuming that the OP was purely motivated to enact such a drastic lifestyle change because of one bully, which seems unlikely. I'm sure there were other factors at play. You don't have to play sports to become a formidable individual. You don't have to stop playing video games either. (Since this is Bungie.net, though, I'm willing to bet OP never stopped playing video games. He's probably just too scared to admit it publicly.) Be yourself, don't let people give you a hard time about it. Bam. Confidence. That's literally all you need. Working out is good because it's healthy and it makes you physically stronger. It's got nothing to do with confidence. (It will boost self-esteem in the short term, but that's different.) This thread isn't even about working out but since it got so much attention earlier, I felt like addressing it here. Confidence. You don't need to cave to a bully. You don't need to become the bully. OP gave into a dick probably because he figured, "Well, I'm getting picked on and this other guy isn't, so let me be just like this other guy and I guess people will stop picking on me."

Bullies aren't nice but they exist as a social pressure to enhance the capability and productivity of the collective whole, it is only when the urge to prove others failings collapses into hatred that bullying becomes something monstrous.
Posted by: Garem And bullying someone to gain a bit of amusement isn't?
of course it is. It was selfish of me to have fun at someone elses expense.
Posted by: Quest is back
Posted by: Studness4 ...bullies are just a normal part of life and growing up and facing adversity.
Very true. Many (I'd say most) kids today aren't learning how to face adversity at all. More so, they're being catered to and they learn that complaining and whining about their problems is the only way go about them. When actually, taking initiative and solving the problem yourself can be much more effective--as you did OP.
Lets spin that around a bit, most of the kids that are catered to and learn that complaining and whining about problems is the only way to go about things often are the ones who become bullies. In most cases bullies are dumb kids who don't understand how life works and are pampered by their parents. Now for my personal sad bully story. I was in elementary school, this was the only time i was ever picked on because as i got older i grew big and had a natural look of a serial killer. So unlike most of you guys i don't know what it was like to be bullied in high school, just feared. Anyways, I was friends with this redhead girl and we had lunch together everyday. Then this one bald douche kid with earrings started spreading rumors that I liked her. She eventually stopped hanging around me and started hanging around this kid like the others girls. Now this douche kids personality was about as colorful as one of my 1st grade turds, but he had confidence and would insult and demean others to further gain this confidence. Because of this some of the more influenced girls would hang around him, further boosting his ego. Unfortunately this included my former friend, the redhead. It was at this young age i realized people like datdudeBV will prosper in a world like ours, while everyone worse off suffers, they will never notice or appreciate other people and will always be self absorbed. Who could blame them, in actuality they are probably the most pure of humans.
Posted by: General Dripik You needed some douche to tell you that? To change you? I was left with severe social anxiety disorder because of those -blam!-s. If I ever saw one again I'd beat them within an inch of their life. ITT idiots trying to justify bullying.
For simple bullying? I personally harbor no ill will towards the guy who bullied me. If anything I would shake his hand and buy him a beer, he helped me become the man I am today and am happy he acted like a jerk, besides hes probably a normal guy now, same with your bullies. No need beating them up over the past.
Posted by: DatDudeBV
Posted by: Garem
Posted by: DatDudeBV From my experience, bullying helps more people than it hurts. Im actually friends with many classmates my friends and I bullied at one time.
Tell that to the thousands of dead bullying victims.
Do they die from the bully's hands? 99% of the time. No They usually kill themselves. Whos fault is that? Who pulled the trigger?
How about this: The bully pulled the mental trigger, the victim pulled the physical trigger.
