  • All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore Socrates is mortal. I learnt it in Law School, it must be true. Syllogistic reasoning is fun.

  • Socrates was actually a politician involved in declaring independance from Great Britain from what was known as the original thirteen colonies. Back then history books taught children that Socrates was actually a god sent back in time to become a philosopher but in actually he was born in 1719. It all had to do with brainwashing. • Why must we go after EVERY SINGLE CONSPIRACY? Yes, he was real. I time traveled, I met him, I told him that you didn't believe that he was real, and he told me to slap you. So, be ready. Gonna phase thru your screen.

  • I don't know. All we know of him are from books written by others (Plato being the most famous). How do we know that he actually existed rather than being a fictional character used to explain Plato's philosophical ideas? We do not. But I guess because Aristotle said "I will not allow the Athenians to sin twice against philosophy" when he fled, clearly referencing Socrates, it can be assumed that he believed him to be a real person. As Aristotle was the student of Plato and Plato supposedly the student of Socrates, it is unlikely that Aristotle would have thought him a real person (as he clearly did) if he in fact was not.

  • Ancient texts from his student Plato; Aristophanes and Xenophanes suggest that he was a real person, which is most likely.

  • Well I take into account the many people who have mentioned Socrates in ancient texts, and the stuff accredited to him, and therefore do conclude he was a real person who lived thousands of years ago.

  • He never wrote anything. His student, Plato, only wrote about him.

Since many accounts of his life are second hand people say they are not reliable if not even historically true.

  • Any proof I could possibly drum up would just be some historian's word. I'm too lazy.

  • If there were factual proof, I don't think the question would have ever been asked. That said, I for one think he existed. [Edited on 11.29.2012 8:45 PM PST]
