Maybe the Didact didn't survive.

I thought his voice at the end was him reflecting on the humans kicking his butt during their war 100,000 years prior. I don't recall the exact wording, but I assumed this was that or perhaps the weird "second form" thing the Forerunners take on when they die (Bornstellar talks about this in the beginning of Cryptum).

 • 343i said Chief will have an archnemesis, a foil character to him. I can't see that being anyone else other than the Didact.

 •
Posted by: ROBERTO jh
Posted by: terroboy He'd dead that grenade didn't kill him but that fall most definitely did.
Read above; he fell into a slipspace portal, came out the other end, and had enough gusto left to give an expository monologue to the rest of the Forerunners/Precursors elsewhere in the universe. Pretty much every indication points to him being alive. I call it the Frank Woods effect: no matter how -blam!- ed a character should be, unless there's a body, that character is coming back.
... *holds out that means that we can see Cortana again* Seriously, I found Chief's and Cortana's relationship in Halo 4 the most interesting thing in the franchise, and they axe it in the same game they introduce it in. -_-

The fall wouldn't kill him. He's immune to the Composer so he would have just fallen into the slipspace portal and been sent to wherever he was sending the composed humans.

 • I seriously doubt that the Didact is dead. He fell through a giant slip-space portal underneath the composer. Meaning he ended up somewhere in space, and seeing as what happened to John twice in a row, the Didact was probably retrieved or revived somehow, as to specifics we don't know yet. But you never know, he could actually be finished. I just have trouble thinking 343 would throw away such a great villain in one game. I personally think the Didact was the best villain the Halo series has had. "Humanity's imprisonment, is a kindness." There was so much hate and contempt within that statement it actually sent a chill through me.

It does seem like Jul has had dealings in person with the Didact. I hope Spartan Ops elaborates on this "Hand of the Didact" thing.
He hates humans, Didact hates humans. It's going to be interesting seeing a comparison between them being drawn out. I like the way Spartan Ops is heading in this respect. I hope they don't prove to be clones of each other. They share the same hatred (on the surface) but the way they're going to achieve their goal is different. We already know Didact just wanted to forcibly add humans to his army. •
Posted by: Primo84
Posted by: switch 104 sv
I see what you're saying, but I think it can just as easily be applied to him having to answer to the first atrocity he committed with The Composer to the ancient humans captive on the Halo rings. Why that's relevant at the end of Halo 4, I have no idea, so I'm going to lean toward your explanation.
The first atrocity can't be attributed to the Composition of prehistoric humans on the Halo rings because it was to fight the Flood, not maintain their status.

 • I think his speech implies that he is around after the end of Halo 4. "...I stand before you, accused of the sin of assuring Forerunner ascendancy... Of attempting to save us from this fate where we are forced to... Recede... Humanity stands as the greatest threat in the galaxy. Refusing to eradicate them is a fool's gambit. We squander eons in the darkness... ...While they seize our triumphs for their own. The Mantle of Responsibility for all things belongs to Forerunners alone! Think of my acts as you will. But do not doubt the reality. The reclamation... has already begun. And we are hopeless to stop it." It seems like the Didact survived his fight with the Chief and has returned to or been recovered by the Forerunner council and is now on trial for his actions. I'd say it's safe to assume he didn't die. In fact I think it was safe to assume that even without the epilogue.
I stand before you. Accused of the sin of assuring Forerunner ascendancy...
The "sin" is referring to the Didact trying to compose all of humanity as a way to wipe them out leaving the Foreunners as the top dogs with no competition.
Of attempting to save us from this fate where we are forced to... Recede...
The Forerunners weren't forced to recede after defeating Ancient Humanity. They were still at the height of their power. It was only towards the end of their war with The Flood that the Librarian began to realise that Forerunners were not meant to hold the Mantle after all.
We squander eons in the darkness... ...While they seize our triumphs for their own.
The Forerunners went into exile ("darkness") thousands of years ago ("eons") and humanity have begun to "seize" Forerunner technology for themselves, Huragok, slipspace drives, shielding etc. This only happened recently, not 100,00 years ago.
The reclamation... has already begun. And we are helpless to stop it."
Again, humanity only began "reclaiming" their rightful place in recent years, not when the were devolved back to glorified apes.
