Destiny at VGAs? Next-gen launch title?

It's a known fact in the gaming industry that new IPs don't get very far nowadays on current generation consoles, which means it wouldn't be too crazy to assume Bungie knows this and wants to wait and release Destiny alongside the next-gen consoles as a launch title. This time period is by far the best time to ever release new IPs, and with all the rumors of the consoles coming in 2013, it's possible we could see a debut trailer at the VGAs coming up soon. Since Bungie likes to announce their games about a year before release, this seems reasonable. Share your speculations.

 • The next-gen systems are rumored for Q4 of next year (November through January 2014), at least the "720" is. I don't think this game is gonna release any earlier then November of 2014, similar to how GTA V has a tentative release date of December 31, 2013 in the Computers at Gamestop, and even with that game they have multiple trailers out.

 • I'd be shocked if Destiny wasn't on current gen consoles. Bungie has been developing it for quite some time, so unless it getting delayed I'd consider it as a game that will come out towards the end of the 360's life cycle or appear on both the 360 and next-gen Xbox (similar to Twilight Princess for Wii and Gamecube).

 •
Posted by: POKEY CLYDE Destiny 1 will be made for this generation. Millions upon millions of gamers have this generation of consoles, being exclusively a launch title won't get you many sales, because a very limited number of gamers have the new generation.
I definitely get what you're saying, but I never said it'd be released exclusively for that console; of course that would be a terrible idea.
Posted by: ecartman1214 I keep seeing people post about porting the title between generations of the console. We don't know the capabilities of the new Gen Xbox. It could have limited backwards compatibility much like the Xbox 360 has with Xbox original games. Being said the contract merely says the game must be compatible for both systems, it doesn't say Destiny #1 should be developed for the Xbox 720.
I remember seeing Cliff Bleszinsky slip up saying you could use your current Gears of War 3 copy on the next-gen console. Definitely a hint that at least select titles are being considered for backwards compatibility. We'll never know for quite a bit though, so lets just keep hoping.

 •
Posted by: cortana 5
I really don't think Bungie needs any public expo to officially announce what Destiny will be. They can announce the trailer to us and give press releases to various gaming websites to the word out, then by E3 next summer they can show some teaser trailers, maybe some gameplay footage to add fuel to the hype fire. If this is the route Bungie takes, I'll tell my friends about it, I'm sure you will tell your friends about it. It will spread and become known to the casual gamers not following Bungie actively.

 • I believe I said this in a previous thread on the same subject. Since it's back, I'll say it again. The VGAs are garbage. I would be incredibly disappointed to see Destiny unveiled at an event like that. E3 would be fantastic, but might be a bit late, depending on the timeline. I keep hearing 2013, but that might be the year for an unveiling, and not a release, so we can skip the damn VGAs for good. Anyways... I'll jump in here and say that because the contract between Activision and Bungie was made public, things are even more subject to change. These weird technicalities and complications may have been smoothed out.
Posted by: PVSpartanL36
Posted by: ecartman1214 I keep seeing people post about porting the title between generations of the console. Being said the contract merely says the game must be compatible for both systems, it doesn't say Destiny #1 should be developed for the Xbox 720. The best example is Halo 2. Halo 2 came out a year before the Xbox 360 but was designed to be played on both consoles and was one of the very few that could do so on the initial Xbox 360 release.
But why would they even mention the 720 in the contract as a platform for Destiny 1 if they were going to rely on the 720's backwards compatibility to play the 360 version? The 720 would simply be running the game on a mock 360, so there would be no need to indicate the 720 as an individual platform. Personally, I would make the comparison to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It was intended to be a GameCube release alone at first, but later in development Nintendo decided to make a version to launch with the Wii as well as the GameCube version. While it was basically the same content, the Wii version was drastically different in its controls. Similarly, I think we'll see significant differences between a 360 and 720 version of Destiny that take advantage of the more powerful 720 hardware, like improved visuals and load times.
[Edited on 11.26.2012 2:18 PM PST]

 • ^---That is what I am saying. The game won't be developed as an Xbox 720 release title, but simply rather programmed to run on both consoles, rather that be using backwards compatibility or if it is not possible, formatted to run on the new Xbox as you pointed out with your Twilight Princess example. But as far as utilizing the improved hardware of the Xbox 720, that is an expensive time consuming upgrade, basically a re-make. It seems like a better business plan for Bungie to design a single version of the game that works for both consoles the same way, then (as the contract goes on) develop Destiny 2 for the Xbox 720 only (not the Xbox 360).

 • What I think: Destiny will be on this generation, and maybe ported later to the next generation. If the game is good enough, it will do well. Look at Dishonoured. New IP, did fantastically, it's a new IP at the end of a console's life. Bungie doesn't really decide when it reveals it's game, Activision does. If Activision doesn't want to take focus away from Black Ops 2, they aren't. Maybe the marketing strategy is to have a small window but strong window of marketing time. Most new IPs get introduced a year or more away from launch, which is due to pushbacks and what not. Remember "The Last Guardian"? That game was revealed years ago. The hype for that game was TREMENDOUS! Eventually it faded, because hype fades with time. What I'm thinking is that Bungie/Activision wants to try a short but strong marketting strategy. This way the hype is strong and it stays strong until release. Also to explain why Destiny won't be next generation. Bungie has been working on it for years. Before they got dev kits for the next generation. We know that Destiny is slated for Fall of 2013, and the rumours are that the next generation also comes out around holiday season 2013, spring 2014. So even if Destiny were a launch title for the next generation, the number of people with the next generation of consoles will be very limited. Where as the people with this generation is at the highest it can be. So who would you want to sell your game to? A very limited amount of people who have the next console as soon as it comes out, OR the millions of gamers who have this generation of console? Edit/TL;DR: Destiny 1 will be made for this generation. Millions upon millions of gamers have this generation of consoles, being exclusively a launch title won't get you many sales, because a very limited number of gamers have the new generation. It probably will be ported over to the next generation when the next generation comes out. It won't be any better than the old generation, it won't get a graphics boost or any new features, it won't be a "remake", it will just be ported over so you can get more sales, it will essentially be the Xbox 360 version on the Xbox 720. •
Posted by: xReconAssassinX
Posted by: Elite Mouse If you want to make money, you release your game for the console that every other house in America has, and then start developing the sequel to be released a few years down the road when the new console has finally grounded.
Bungie can just port the game to the 360 as well as the "720". So they'd get the most of both sales. That seems like a much better business plan.
Besides, I still think the Xbox 360 has five years or so in it, so they would get more sales and stuff if they made their first few games for Xbox 360 and then port it to the new console.

 • Has anyone on this site read the bungie contract?! They are releasing a prequel to a trilogy FOR the xbox 360, PC, and playstation 3. The trilogy itself is for the Nextbox and PC.

 • I was thinkig of Destiny as a new launch title aswell. The 360 is kind of outdated for a while now. I don't buy games for it anymore cause it seems like a waste of money. But if this is the truth I'm guessing they will be releasing real info around E3 next year so darkness ahoy.

 • Just for kicks, I read the Activision-Bungie contract today. Here's an excerpt regarding platforms:
As described in the Native Release Plan, Destiny Game #1, along with any related DLC Releases as well as Comet #1, shall be initially developed by Licensor to operate on and be compatible with the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console ("Xbox 360") and the next successor console platform released by Microsoft configued for both the NTSC and PAL television/video system standards ("Xbox 720").
So based on what I'm reading here, I would wager a guess that Destiny will come out on both platforms at a similar time. 360 owners can get their version if they don't want to pay for the upgrade to the 720, but at the same time Destiny could be used as a system seller at the 720's launch. It's just a question of when that launch will be. [Edited on 11.25.2012 11:13 PM PST]

But I still disagree. I do agree with Elite Mouse. Bungie already has a huge fanbase and reputation. They aren't some new company nobody has heard of releasing its first title. Add in the fact that developing titles for new consoles requires DEV kits for those consoles, Sony and Microsoft just started releasing their DEV kits which would barely give Bungie a year to start over on a title they supposedly started working on over 3 years ago. It would be a catastrophic flop for Bungie to release there brand new IP for a new console. Your statement on launch titles that come with new consoles is inaccurate. Xbox 360 Launch Titles That list is made of almost completely of pre-existing IPs. Mouse's post was very accurate in why this is so.

 •
Posted by: ecartman1214 I would also like to add that porting a game across 2 (or more) generations of a console is what most people these days call a "re-make" A re-make is an expensive process, maybe in like 10-15 years if Destiny is a huge hit we could see its "re-make" similar to how Halo Anniversary was.
That is a fair point. Originally I was going to bring up how easily BF2 was ported from xbox to 360, but I remembered that Modern Combat in itself was a port from the PC, and so it couldn't have been that difficult to do the same for the 360. I don't see Destiny spanning two generations.

 •
Posted by: ecartman1214 Your post makes no sense at all. What are you talking about? Are you saying IPs are more popular in non existent future consoles?
Either you didn't read the post or you don't get the point. When the new consoles launch, there isn't going to be a big library to choose from, which is why new IPs soar during those periods.
