SPOILERS Chief's Origins

Not a fantastic title, but didn't want to put any kind of spoilers in the title. The Librarian tells Chief that she 'planted seeds' that lead to his inclusion in the Spartan II project (so probably the project itself) as well as his Mjolnir armour and Cortana. How is that possible? Or do we just dismiss it as forerunner magic? I really liked the way Chief was meant to kill the Didact, I just wish I could understand it more!

The way Halsey refers to Spartans being "humanity's next evolutionary step" is quite proleptic, I thought that might come into play during Halo 4, but maybe not. I think in some way, all of humanity will be forced to take up arms in response to the next threat, and the spartans will come strongly into play.
I think that when she said that it meant something else entirely. It's just with the new context of Halo 4 that quote could mean who knows what.
The S-IIs have the best DNA among the human race. The Chief has accelerated his evolution. Since the Mantle of Responsibility belongs to the race which is the most involved, I'd say this means that the Spartans, and particularly the Chief, will play a big role in humanity's attaining of the Mantle.

 • What made me more confused during this scene was the Librarian accelerating Master Chief's evolutionary journey. What the hell does that even mean...

 • The 'seeds' the Librarian mentions is referred to as a geas - to put it in Layman's terms, a geas is a series of genetic commands imprinted in an organism or species to achieve a particular purpose. In CEA's Terminals, Guilty Spark confirms that humanity do indeed have a geas imposed on them which links to the librarian's "thousand lifetimes of planning". John is the culmination of that plan, and it seems that humanity are being nurtured by the Librarian to prepare for the return of the Precursors and the test they will soon put us through.
