Any poker players here?
So I'm going to play poker tomorrow night with a psychiatrist from work and his buddies.
I haven't played much with real people, only once.
If anyone has any advice that would be sweet, I'm intimidated.
I'm afraid the psychiatrist will be able to read me like a book. He's like Dr Spock.

I need to learn how to play it one day.. But I'd be terrible at keeping a serious face. I'd get a good hand and the biggest smile would grow on my face.

Physical tells can be pretty unreliable; I only seriously consider them in my decisions if I have had a substantial sample size of said tell occurring.

I'm going to assume you're pretty new and assume it's holdem. Only play good hands in early position (pairs, AK, AQ, suited connectors). Rasie to 3 times the big blind most of the time, and call some of the time. If it is folded to you in later position, you can raise with hands of lesser strength, because the added advantage of your good position counterbalances the poor strength of your hand. Try to avoid putting a lot of money in with "reverse-implied odds hands" such as Ax (which refers to any card with an ance, usually below queen, as they are vulnerable to making second best hands often) and KJ. If you're in position against only one opponent and he checks the flop to you, you should bet 1/2 to 3/4 of the pot every single time. I could explain this in detail but the general theory is he will only hit a pair roughly 33% of flops, so your bet will take it the majority of the time. If you get called, you can be almost certain he has at least a pair, usually some kind of drawing hand (to a flush or straight). Proceed with caution. The only real bluffing you should do is the continuation bet (the name for what I described in the previous paragraph) and raising with weakish hands preflop when it's been folded to you on the dealer or close to it. Those multi-street bluffs that you see on TV are not necessary to win a tournament and are only effective against good players. I would also look up a simple poker odds calculator. It's good to know the standard ones. For example, if you flop an open ended straight draw or a four flush, you have roughly a 2:1 chance of making your hand. So if someone bets the pot or less and you think you will be sticking around to the river, you have a mathematically justified call. Observe your opponents behavior when they have certain hands. You can pick up on physical tells and betting patterns this way. I am assuming your opponents aren't going to be much better than you, so you should have at least a slight advantage with these instructions. Hope that helped. [Edited on 10.05.2012 10:40 PM PDT]

Fold pocket Aces, all in on everything else. But seriously, please, please don't be one of those players that are call machines, chase straights/flushes forever or think just because you have an Ace in your hand you've auto won.

One thing I do when I go to the casino is I play like I already lost the money. Now I'm not saying play reckless or like you have to make a come back. I'm just saying if you accept that you can lose then you are less likely to play with emotion. You have to check that at the door. The worst thing you can do in person is go on tilt. People will pick up on it at any level and take you down chip by chip letting you make the mistakes for them. Don't try and get to fancy with trapping or anything like that. Just play every hand straight up. You hit a pair on the flop, bet. Don't give them a chance to get free cards. You will lose sometimes but if they get lucky they get lucky, nothing you can do. Pot control is huge.

Well, you can always search for a list of probabilities so that you know how good your hand is, also, don´t go in fear, that just makes it easier for him. If you want to trick him, search for common body language signs of lying, learn those signs, NOT to read others, but to confuse them. once you get there, start by playing SAFE, just bet if your hand is good, and don´t go betting a lot, now, after some wins or losses, when you get a really good hand, bet a lot and use the body language you learned, try to appear as if you where not conscious of your body language. After he or they bet you their money and you take it, abuse the body language of lying, this will confuse them and make them feel uncomfortable with their game. Remember, the only way to hide something through body language is by using different body language.

Good luck. Play conservative. Fold more than you stay in. Only keep going if you are reasonably sure you have a strong hand. That means at least 2 pair.

Some basic tells go a long way. If someone is quiet they will get talkative when they have it and vice versa. If someone is bouncing their foot a lot (aka happy feet) then they more then likely have a good hand. Chewing is a sign that they normally don't have anything and the body does it as a sorta internal defense tactic. Like how animals show their teeth. A bunch of other stuff I can't think of right now. . .
